Just a 20-minute drive from historic Durham, The Royal Oak is a family-run hotel offering a traditional restaurant, a bar, and free Wi-Fi throughout. The hotel has wonderful views of the County Durham countryside.

The Royal Oak doesn't look like anything special from the outside, but don't be fooled by that - the room we had was large, clean and comfortable with lovely views over open fields. It was one of the best places we stayed during our six-week tour, and we would have liked to have had more than one night there. The beds and pillows were just right, and it was quiet overnight so we got a good night's sleep. We had a very good evening meal and breakfast in the pub. The landlady was friendly and helpful, and even got two burly lads at the bar to take our suitcases upstairs for us!

Friendly welcome and attention staff. Very comfortable rooms and lovely shower. The children loved the room and bunk beds. Some comments mention noise from the bar but we didn't find this a problem.

Keith called the restaurant and asked them to provide us with a takeaway, and then he cleared a space at his kitchen table for us to enjoy our supper. He was absolutely charming and a great host.

The individual rooms were charming, comfortable and well equipped. The breakfast was amazing with individual orders wonderfully catered for and additional extras such as bowls of fruit and special jams. There was so much character to the house and a very personal touch to our visit. A reservation for dinner at an Italian restaurant nearby was kindly made by Christine and we enjoyed a very good meal.

The staff were friendly and great hosts and the Inn it self is situated about 5 mins from a nature reserve which was an added bonus. Really enjoyed my short stay here.DanielSolo traveller
