This family-run hotel is situated in Newton Stewart, a charming Scottish town on the River Cree. With free Wi-Fi throughout and free parking on site, it is around 5 minutes’ walk from the town centre.

The edge of the beautiful Galloway Forest Park is only a few miles away, and Garlies Castle is a 10-minute drive from The Blackhorse Hotel. In the surrounding area you can visit Cairn Holy, a chambered cairn outside town.

There was no breakfast, given the price. It was very easy to go to Sainsbury's and buy some items. What an excellent base to have a look at Galloway and it was very easy to find my way around. I need to return and explore the surroundings even more.

Located at the front of the hotel, the Queen Street Bar & Restaurant is open to both the public and residents. With booth seats, it is occasionally host to live acoustic music and a live band on a Saturday evening. It features two large TVs and a pool table. With luxurious seating, the Knights restaurant serves an a la carte menu and a selection of after dinner drinks.

The service was unmatched, every member of staff were helpful, efficient and friendly, they couldn't do enough for you. The restaurant menu was great - a lot of variety especially with the specials menu changing frequently too. Breakfast was also a winner, continental and a full Scottish breakfast if you wanted (you could pick as many or as less items as wanted). The hotel is more than 300 years old so it was lovely staying somewhere that holds a small amount of history.

Superb stay at Stables Guest House! The owners Dane and Fay are lovely and made me feel very welcome upon arrival! I turned up with only a vague idea of how I was going to spend my weekend, but Dane and Fay's local knowledge really helped me out and I ended up walking to the top of the Merrick in gorgeous weather! My room was also very comfortable and had everything I needed. Breakfast was superb! All in all, this was a brilliant stay and I couldn't fault a thing. I'm certain I'll be back!

Good location in the town. Reasonably sized rooms. Good heating. Very good food for dinner (not included in the stay, so I recommend the restaurant but not the accommodation)

Breakfast and dinner were fine. The bedroom was aweful . single glazing. Bathroom like a fridge. we had to walk up flights of stairs and through a recreation room to get to our room no lifts! decor shabby in bedroom it is an old hotel. dining room clean and modernised.Staff friendly and helpful. We did note a for sale notice on outside of the property and were told the owner was absentee landlord.

In answer to a previous question: I didn't have time to walk around the neighbourhood on this specific occasion, but I have done so in the past, and it is one of my favourite places to visit. This time I was visiting the Wigtown Book Festival. The Crown offered better value for money than places within Wigtown itself, and the bus from Wigtown stops practically outside the door of the of the Crown. Lovely dinning room where they served an excellent evening meal and breakfast.

All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was tasty and efficiently cooked and served. I liked the view of the hills from my quiet room. Although the restaurant is not open for dinner, I was able to eat at another hotel, just down the road. The Bruce was very convenient for the festival I was attending in Wigtown and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.
