If you want to feel just a little bit of struggle, you should walk to the top. And the best time is early in the morning 4-4.30 a.m. So you get to the top to see the sunrise. The whole experience is unbeleivable

Stay on site at bottom of hill at the Massada Hostel for sheer convenience. Take the 5.15 start walk up the snake trail to reach the top by dawn for a stunning view ( you need to be fit) - suggest you get out there by 5pm to be at front of the queue as its mayhem later. You can take the audio guide at the ticket office whcih you will miss later otherwise.
