Hólaskjól Highland Center is situated in northern Fjallabaksleið in the Highlands. If you arrive from the south the last 30 km are on a F road but no rivers to cross. If you arrive from the north you have river crossings and need a 4X4 jeep. The property features mountain and river views, plus is 7 km from Eldgjá and 40 km from Landmannalaugar.

Like how secluded and special the place is. The fact that it is close to a nameless waterfall. The lava maze that leads up to the waterfall. We have our own cabin, although the space is a bit tight with limited room to move about, the place is comfortable. The host was exceptionally friendly and shared a lot about the space, and about Iceland.

We chose the location in order to hopefully see the aurora- we weren’t disappointed. We were having dinner and they informed us that the lights were on! Fabulous! The meal was lovely too- staff were great, very friendly and helpful.

Ignore the other reviews about breakfast, they provide a decent portion. Yes, some of the food comes pre-packaged, but this is a bnb in a remote area. It’s also Iceland, so most food comes imported and packaged anyway. Bedroom was quite large and the shared bathrooms were clean. Remember to bring your own soap!

About the location: it´s 5 minutes from Stjórnarfoss, 50 minutes from Vík and 1 hour from Skaftafell & Svartifoss. Location is on a family sheep farm and accomodations are similar to summer camp lodges. Accomodations small but functional. The baked goods are delicious, the rest of breakfast and dinner were ok.
