The room AC is "glacial" when returning after a hot summer day of exploration, The hostess is cheerful, and friendly and speaks serviceable English.

It is not the village itself that impresses but the...
It is not the village itself that impresses but the surroundings. There are some great things to see within short distance. You have the ancient basorelief of a horseman on the rock right in Madara, but you also can climb to the fortress and have a beautiful view to the village and the plane. There is a fortress in Shumen (15km), the stone forest (60km) and some more fortresses in different villages within 30-40km. You need to travel by car so that you can have enough mobility.

A very interesting city, quite different from other bigger cities in Bulgaria. It is very wide, with a very nice and restored city centre, a beautiful old town full of many interesting museums. I don't think I've seen as many statues and monuments as in Shumen in any other city in the country. There are many half a day or one day trips around Shumen, such as the two (first) old capitals - Pliska and Preslav (the more interesting to visit of the two). The Madara Horseman complex (part of the UNESCO World Heritage) is also located very close by. Overall we had a great time in Shumen, yet we would have liked to have stayed longer.

It was a wonderfull city comparable to the city of Ruse. If you travel here please visit Sherif Pasha Mosque, Old City Center, The monument of 1300 years of Bulgaria, Shumen Fortress, the eastern archeological reserve of Madara, The southern Archeological reserve at Veliki Preslav and the Archeological Reserve at Pliska.

Shumen is a very diverse, vibrant city with something for everyone. Lots of places to visit close by and the pedestrian boulevard is lovely. The views from up at the Monument are spectacular. There are plenty of places to eat ranging from fast food places to nice lovely restaurants. eating out is very cheap and always of very good quality. Lots of taxis and buses. Be careful of the Bulgarian drivers, they seem to think they are trying to out qualify Lewis Hamilton.

Shumen is a modern town with lots to see and do. There is monument and castle in the hills around Shumen. On the approach road to the monument is a great restaurant tucked in amongst the forest. Shumen also has its own brewery. Plenty of shops, cafes and shopping.

The village is very well situated for visiting the many and varied historical attractions in the Shumen area. One of those features not given so much publicity are the cave monasteries which (if fit and healthy!) can be walked to from the village of Osmar, and well worth the effort. For the not so active, the pretty village is relaxing and interesting to wander around.
