Located in Latacunga, REEC Latacunga by Oro Verde Hotels features a terrace. This 3-star hotel offers room service, a 24-hour front desk and free WiFi. Facility is very new, modern, and clean. The shower was the best shower re hot water and pressure we had in Ecuador. Breakfast was good and they were able to make European style coffees which was a pleasant bonus. Area is in a central part of Latacunga -- we never felt unsafe although we did not go out after dark. Dinner at the restaurant on site was a bit pricey but lunch was great and a good deal. So we were stuck in Latacunga during the ongoing protests. One night turned into four. Despite everyone being pretty stressed (it was just me, my husband and several employees who were living onsite at that point), service was still impeccable. They were able to get us a slightly cheaper rate. Amazingly, they were also able to find us a driver willing to shuttle us to Quito as well. Just went above and beyond during a stressful time.

This lodge was not in Machachi, it is simply the nearest larger community. On this trip we did not visit Machachi, although I know it is a gateway to the north of Cotopaxi National Park.
We enjoyed "El Provenir" for what it is, a rustic working ranch with mostly male interaction...no, not a five star hotel with smiling pretty girls at the desk, but great for the experience we were looking for. We loved the location near Cotopaxi Park, and the fact that "El Provenir" is a working ranch. The staff (Elihandro?) was very accommodating to book us local guides at the last minute for many activities. Though they all do not speak English, they try very hard and between a little English and a little spanish, google translate, and allot of gestures, we didn't have a problem, and in fact had more fun. Raffeal is an amazing chagra (cowboy/horseman) to observe. Itallo took up on a great 2-3 hour ride, Dario to the Park and Roberto to "crater lake and then to Machachi to buy chaps...all on his day off. The hot water bottles were wonderful to warm the beds. The Hot Chocolate with cheese excellent and the steak cooked on lava stone amazing! We will return for sure!
Getting there from Machala takes 2 hours if you are driving a small car. Keep in mind if you plan to stay here and drive to other places for sightseeing, as you may only be doing activities close to the Cotopaxi because of road (stone paved road..in small car, it is so bumpy, you may not be able to drive over 15 kmh
The area was interesting and we used it as a stopover between the Cotopaxi and the Quilatoa Laguna. We visited a rose farm - roses are Ecuadors 5th largest export and had lunch at the local Hacienda- we recommend a visit or stay there.
Latacunga is a scruffy city but the centro historico has some nice colonial buildings and churches. It is a good starting point for visiting the second highest volcano in Ecuador, Cotopaxi or the lake near Quilotoa.
Lovely city, beautiful people, great tours to sasquili and Cotopaxi, great food and generally s good feel about the place.
Latacunga is a nice small place where you can do a few excursions but you don't want to stay there for too long, because besides climbing Cotopaxi and going to Quilotoa, there isn't that much to do in city/village. There are several small shops where you can buy fresh bread, or fresh vegetables for a very nice price and you can't really get lost. And if it might occur, you can take a taxi which pretty much always costs $1,25 to $1,50 tops. The busses from the terminal are going very frequently to Quito, Ambato or Quilotoa too, so those facilities are excellent.
We stayed three nights, perfect for a fabulous guided trip to Cotopaxi national park and a day to Lago Quilatoa. The hotel arranged the guided trips and will also arrange transfers from local buses. The hacienda is about 10 minutes drive from Latacunga in beautiful countryside.
A surprisingly lovely town. Make the effort and explore and don’t just use it to transit to the many parks and volcanoes in the Cotopaxi province.
Very busy town and good base for hikes to Cotopaxi and Quilotoa. Lots of restaurants and shops around. Not very vegan friendly, so if you are, try to book a hostel with kitchen facilities.
Machachi

With its peaceful atmosphere and proximity to nature, this hotel is the perfect retreat for those seeking a genuine and immersive experience in the heart of the Ecuadorian countryside!
Latacunga
Our best accommodation in our 3-week trip in Ecuador, by far! As the hotel was quite empty, we were graciously upgraded to a bigger room, very comfortable. Roof terrace with a view of Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. And the host gave us tons of tips and information about excursions in the area, whether Quilotoa or Cotopaxi. As travel agencies in Latacunga had mostly all closed down during the pandemic, he arranged a driver to go to Cotopaxi. Extremely kind and helpful and welcoming.
Latacunga
Marco, the host, was very friendly. He knew everything of the busses and the things to do around. If you want to do a tour, I’m sure he can help you with it. We did 2 day Quilotoa walk and we could leave our lugage without any charge. He even drove us to the terminal to take a bus! Also the breakfast is good. big and clean rooms and it was quiet, which is not always normal in Ecuador. It’s perfect place to do Quilotoa and Cotopaxi from
Machachi
Aracely is the most caring host we have met in Ecuador! she helped us get a guide for Cotopaxi and a good deal. We liked the remote but easy access (stop on the panamerican at El chaupi and get a bus from there too) and the facilities were perfect to relax and rest. On a clear day views on Corazon and Illiniza are just wonderful. Kitchen a bit basic but sufficient. Aracelys breakfast was very generous and delicious!
- Cleanliness - Bedroom including comfort of bed - Location being close to two lovely squares - Excellent wifi - The hotel kindly organised a taxi driver for us. His cost was reasonable and he even organised a tour guide for us at Cotopaxi. That said, he wasn't perfect: he used his phone at the wheel and he laughed at others involved in a car crash, something we didn't appreciate.
The location is really good as you can see Cotopaxi mountain when the sky is clear. They have a small farm where you can see lamas and dogs. The hotel's restaurant is the BEST in ECUADOR ( they have a variety of food selection ), where everything we had was delicious( Try their hot chocolate 200/200). The staff at the hotel was friendly.
Machachi
The rooms are beautiful, spacious, and very clean. I really like the dining room area, kitchen, and showers have hot water. It feels more like an airbnb in the mountains than a hostel. It is very reasonably priced and is close to cotopaxi NP north entrance, along with La ruta de la cascadas. Its very quiet and peaceful at night.
Latacunga
Hostal offers best Value for Money I found in Ecuador. Its basic but everything is clean and offers Kitchen and Water to Refill. Also offers Tours. If you want to Summit Cotopaxi its propably the lowest Price you can get and includes everything. The Equipment was good and the Guide had 30 years of Expirience!
Hacienda Santa Ana
This hotel provides a unique experience and attention. The attention and dedication provided by the owner "Rocio" and the facility managers Edison and Victor goes beyond and above. The hotel location allows you do all the highland activities expected in the Cotopaxi area.
Machachi
the rooms are incredible, so clean and beautiful!!! lots of attention to details. The views of the Cotopaxi are unreal! The staff is wonderful and helpful. The meals are the best we have had in Ecuador- seriously such amazing food!!! highly recommended!
Latacunga
Great price! Kitchen was good, chill area was good. Hostel was safe. Overnight storage for $0.50/night. We booked the Cotopaxi summit with the hostel and had a great experience doing the summit. $250 for everything included.
Latacunga
Great location with a view of Cotopaxi. Danny was so helpful and friendly and and made check in really easy. He also took us on a day trip to the volcano. The apartment was comfortable and was an easy walk to the centre of town.
Perfect hostel to visit the Cotopaxi. The girl at reception was very nice and helpful. Very good breakfast and the tour to the Cotopaxi, reserved directly on site, has been great!
Latacunga
Location was amazing, kitchen was big, we could do laundry, bathrooms were cleaned every day, could book a Cotopaxi trip right from the hostel
Wonderful family owned hotel with an elegant breakfast. Very helpful in setting up a tour to Cotopaxi.

Competent staff and the restaurant is ok. Very close from the cotopaxi national park.
beautiful property, great room. staff are super helpful and lovely. great place to relax.
Loved being inside the park! Beautiful setting, friendly staff, good food, cute and comfortable room. Relaxing place to hangout in the main lodge.
