Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThe grounds were immaculate and beautiful with gorgeous tropical plants everywhere. all of the rooms were beautifully decorated and spacious. The rain shower had amazing water pressure! And the bed and pillows were so comfortable, I could’ve stayed in bed much longer if I wasn’t so excited to get up and explore Belize! The staff were incredibly welcoming and accommodating, even after we left our stay at Mariposa we came back to say goodbye once more and have one more pina colada with the wonderful people running this great place.

United StatesWe tend not to complain or nitpick about things that are inconsequential. There were a few little things that they fixed immediately and nothing that caused us stress. It is a very relaxing place with a nice pool and a lovely little private beach within inches of warm, inviting sea water. Why complain about anything!
A beautiful remodeled boutique resort right on the Caribbean Sea in Placencia. Minutes from the small airport for easy pick up and departure. Lovely accommodations. We stayed in one of the “tree house” rooms, away from common walls. It was well appointed and comfortable and wi-fi access was great. We borrowed their very nice bikes and rode into town a few times for breakfast. The best thing about this place was Donny, Carlos, Gladys, Jose, George, Moises, masseuse Alba and all the rest of the staff. This is one of the most attentive, kind and friendly staffs we’ve ever come across. It felt like we’d been welcomed into a Belizean family! There is much more I could say but better to find out for yourself. We’ve traveled all over the world and have stayed in all levels of hotels and hovels and elegance and simplicity and the Mariposa rates as one of our favorites. Oh, and did I mention their restaurant The Breezeway? Top class meals on the beach. Try the Belizean breakfast with fry jacks for $10US.

United StatesThe restaurant food was great but a bit pricey compared to the other restaurants around the village.
Hospitality service was exemplary. Gladys and Donny were particularly attentive to all our needs. The beach was kept clean of sargassum. It was never crowded so we were able to relax at all times of the day and enjoy the kayaks and games. Mariposa was a beautiful place and we would happily stay again on our next visit to Placencia.

I would describe the Mariposa as a Goldilocks property - just right. A small 11-room hotel, not all shiny and modern (which isn’t the local vibe anyway) but newly renovated to a very high standard. It is in the perfect location, away from the busier village but close enough to easily bike. The food and cocktails were excellent and I cannot say enough about the staff who were unfailingly helpful and nice. We stayed in Room 9 which was overlooking the pool and beach, the perfect location. It also has a king sized bed, large private balcony, and a big bathroom with minifridge and coffee maker

United StatesThe only negative was the seaweed in the water which is not the hotels fault and is common to Belize. The hotel does rake it every day and does their best to mitigate it.
My husband and I had a wonderful time at the Mariposa Our room was right beside the pool area but it was never noisy. It was nicely appointed, lots of room, comfortable bed. The staff were excellent and we were treated like king and queen. Anything you wanted or needed, above and beyond! My husband and I wanted to watch an NFL playoff game and they set up a flat screen tv in the palapa for us to watch! The staff was happy to make restaurant recommendations, arrange taxis, coordinate golf cart rentals, arrange massages and many other things. They took care of me when I was not feeling well with a hot ginger drink to settle my stomach. Although it is not walkable to many places, it is a short one mile from the village by either golf cart or taxi. And, the food at the restaurant was very good so, no need to go anywhere!

United StatesThere was a little bit of noise from the street nearby.
The view was amazing from the beach/restaurant! The accommodations were clean, well kept, and more upscale for a treehouse type lodging. The pool was a good size and there were plenty of lounging areas. The staff were all very friendly and kind. Mr.Lewis, the owner, even offer to bring a library book we left behind back to the states with him and mailed it to us free of charge! That really saved us and was definitely going above and beyond for a guest!

United StatesThe only thing that wasn’t perfect about our stay at Mariposa was the seagrass (or It apparently blows in at that time of year. It kept us from wading into the ocean. But there were kayaks and paddle boards available for getting out on the water as an alternative. After traveling around Belize, I realize that the seagrass is everywhere on the east coast shores. We found seagrass-free beach at the tip of Placencia Peninsula by the municipal pier, and on the western side of Caye Caulker. Mariposa actually deals with the nuisance better than any other resort we visited. Every day they had staff on the beach raking it up and burying it or hauling it away, so it never got smelly like it did at other beaches where it was left to rot. We actually had to leave another hotel on Caye Caulker because the smell was giving us headaches. It made me really appreciate how Mariposa so diligently dealt with the issue.
THE STAFF: From the moment we pulled in and Gladis greeted us with cool, eucalyptus-infused towels and fresh fruit rum drinks, we were treated like visiting royalty. Carlos said it outright: “you’re on vacation, and we’re here to spoil you.” And they did! Jose whisked our bags away while we checked in with George and were greeted by Mariposa’s owner, Lewis, and then showed us how everything worked in our beautiful jungle cabana. For our entire stay, the staff was on the ready to answer any questions, fit us with bicycles (well-maintained beach combers provided for all guests), run us into town, bring extra coffee supplies. They were there to bring menus, drinks, offer ice water as we lounged by the pool. Our first day there, I asked Gladis about the coconut trees and that prompted her to offer me fresh coconut water from one of the fruits - I watched them actually cut the coconut from the tree, use the machete to open it up, and then pour coconut water over ice for me. Never missing a detail, Gladis garnished my fresh drink with a flower from the garden by the pool. The staff at Mariposa are friendly, warm and professional; they go the extra mile; and they really are the reason Mariposa is THE place to stay on the peninsula. THE ROOMS: We stayed in a cabana with a double bed and bunks for the kids. The bathroom was newly redone, well-lit and stocked with towels, robes, etc. there were two sinks and good counter space (important when traveling with two teenagers!) My husband and I took advantage of the coolish mornings to sit on our covered deck with coffee or to read in the comfy hammock to start the day. The AC inside was bliss for afternoon nap time after a day walking around town. My sister stayed in a beautiful room in the main building right off the pool where she could open her door to the breeze off the water. Her room, too, was beautifully done, spacious, and well stocked with amenities.

United StatesThe only think that everyone along the coast deals with is the traveling sea grass, which accumulates on everyone’s beaches. Mariposa is doing something unique—they are burying the sea grass into the sand and using it to build up the beach.
My room was right next to the pool and faced the beach. the breeze kept any insects away. everything about the place was clean and well-appointed! The towels were thick and long. My room had a frig, a lock box, and a wonderful shower!! The bed was comfortable and the bedside lights were bright enough to read at night. There is an on-site restaurant and the servers couldn’t be more delightful—both in their service (not too much and not too little) and the care that they took with me. The food was simply delicious!!! Yum! And the drinks were excellent! We borrowed the bikes for a ride into town. The bikes were in excellent working shape.

Beautiful property! The pictures don’t do it justice. The owners are fantastic, they arranged excursions for us with the best guides, a massage on the beach, had a golf cart delivered for us to rent for the week, made sure every need we had was met- and then some! Our room was enchanting! The view was almost better. The chef made the most amazing dishes, the bartender treated us like family and made the best cocktails. Our room was thoroughly cleaned daily. The pool was pristine and right on the beach. The beach was very clean and had hammocks, seating options, umbrellas and tables for dining. We couldn’t have asked for a better escape. We are already planning a return trip.
