Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

ChinaStaff was very nice and friendly, but to be honest they didn’t seem to be properly trained like the staff of a real 5-star hotel. We went to the Shangri-la the day before and I could see the difference. For example the way they reply to your messages is not super professional. Then on the day we arrived they kept us waiting a long time at the reception and at the end they forgot to give the keys, which is the only purpose of checking in. And then we were tired so we wanted to nap but some staff came and kept ringing the bell until we opened. I mean yes it was nice to bring us snacks but it was not worth it to wake us up for that. The breakfast was good but not amazing.
Beautiful place, lots of people coming just to take photos

Hong KongThe rooms do not face the main road but are next to the main road and one can hear all the cars / buses / trucks zooming by or honking their horns. It is quite disturbing given the serenity of the property. The villa style rooms are further from the road but I imagine one can still hear the road.
The property is beautiful and maintained well. The staff are well trained and personable. The hotel offers free activities each day: yoga, tai chi class, fireworks show, cultural activities, etc. The restaurant’s food is delicious and good quality. The hotel gym is small but adequate.

United KingdomThe swimming pool is not heated so we couldn't use it. It would be good if they had hot tubs or something that people could use in the colder months.
We loved the aesthetics of the hotel. It is very beautiful. The staff were so lovely and accommodating. Very good location to nearby activities. Lovely bar, however the bar and restaurant were pricey which is to be expected.

ChinaThe main issue is the noise from the proximity to the main road. Although it quietens off a little at night time it is still fairly obvious. Other than that, there is little to fault with the property!
Obviously, it's the architecture and the interface between the old and the new, which is extended to the interiors. The surrounding landscape is amazing. Finally the pool is really cool with an amazing view!

ItalyGiven the previous reviews on Booking.com, we hesitated to book the Sugar House due to its relatively low rating. However, after comparing it with other sites that showed excellent reviews, we realized there might have been a discrepancy. When our guide in Shanghai confirmed that it was the best option in Yangshuo, we decided to book it, and we were definitely right. It is an amazing place with good services and a great setting. The hotel has been meticulously refurbished with strong artistic feel; it was part of the Alila Hotels until recently. Although it's a shame that it is no longer part of Alila, the standards are still very high. The staff, like elsewhere in China, struggles with English, and yes, the standard and deluxe rooms are a bit noisy due to their proximity to the main road, but it's nothing to worry about. The hotel is a unique structure set in absolutely stunning natural surroundings with amazing cuisine and hardworking staff. The spa is an absolute must. We have traveled extensively, and this is definitely one of the most unique places we've ever been.

Hong KongVery minor quibble but majority of staff appeared to speak little or no English. We got by as we had some basic Chinese in our group but some conversations were a little tricky
Good selection of food, particularly Chinese menu. Location was amazingly picturesque , a truly unique hotel, immaculately designed - made for photos. Easy to get around with hotel cars or Didi. Rooms were a good size and well cleaned and maintained. Beautiful spa and great service.

ChinaWrong travel time, too many Mingyuan, wanna be KOL, families. The management of the hotel changed more than a year ago, it was Western managed before and had clear structures and rules, like a 5 star resort. Now it's local managed and it's a bit chaotic, the staff is not very active or helpful (except one of the pool boys, the housekeeping ayis and the spa staff). It's a typical Chinese hotel with an International rating of 4 Stars, which is not bad. But our timing was bad so we had to share our time for 2 with many many families, children in the pool and lots of noise. The Restaurant is a local one and it's not really recommended to try the Western dishes. The local Yangshuo and Guangxi specialties are good, but overpriced compared to Restaurants in Yangshuo. The bar is okay, they kept some recipes from the former bartenders, which are good. Unfortunately they are out of stock with many wines and Champagnes, so the choice is limited. The pool is used to take pictures instead of swimming. There are signs saying clearly no pictures while pool is in use, but no one cares. There are also signs saying no hotel slippers at the restaurant, but the local guests don't care. Also signs saying don't hang your clothes at the glass balconies, no one cares ... Also the Management doesn't care. The late check out, I requested already with my booking here and they promised me to find a solution one day before my departure, ended up in "Sorry sir, the room has a booking tomorrow." And I was willing to pay for a late check out. Really bad service. All in all nothing special, but also nothing super bad. Just not what you expect if you pay 18K for a week in a "luxury" resort. Next time better Sanya again.
Location was very nice, the architecture of the hotel is also unique and very beautiful. The big pool is a plus and the room plus the spa experience were over average. Some of the staff, really wants to treat you special, but that's difficult... I was very happy about the breakfast one day, where the staff remembered my room number after 4 days. Also one of the pool boys is very good and attentive and does better service then some of his F&B colleagues. The rooms looking nice, were clean.

ChinaThe resort is located just 50m off of the main road. You can hear industrial traffic and truck horns throughout the entire resort (including in the rooms) 24 hours per day. Service is rough. F&B is not a selling point. The hotel is no longer the Alila/Hyatt brand. This should be made more obvious to potential customers, as the level of service one would expect from this brand no longer exists, but costs are the same. The owner has cut his own costs by not supplying pool-chair cushions, and there is an obvious lack of staff training. Other guests flew video-capable drones directly into view of our bedroom while my partner and I were changing clothes one evening. The hotel claims to have a no-drone policy, but was not sympathetic to this perverted violation of privacy. It happened multiple times again after notifying the staff. I’ve lived in China (and have loved living in China) for 6 years and can appreciate a range of accommodation and service levels from Mongolian style yurts to the Shanghai Ritz. The Sugar House did not live up to its reputation.
Physical hotel and landscape are beautiful. Rooms/bed are what you would expect for a resort of this price point. Pool is the main reason to stay here and it was lovely.

ChinaThere is no sound proofing in the rooms so you'll be hearing your neighbors and the busy street outside the entire time. They leave ear plugs in the room for that. The hotel decided to destroy the serenity and relaxing surroundings of this beautiful hotel with a music festival. The worst part is the hotel staff didn't see it necessary to inform people when booking the hotel that there would be hundreds of people flocking to the hotel grounds for a music festival that takes place for three nights starting at 2 pm until 10pm at their beautiful pool. I didn't travel this far to listen to terrible club music; I came to listen to the river and hear the birds. You aren't allowed to be around the pool area/fitness center or get into the bar when the festival starts as they have roped it off for festival participants. We paid quite a bit of money to stay here for two nights and now we're not even able to use the facilities for over half the day. Dinner the last night wasn't even from the menu as they only offered a seafood buffet. Not being able to use half the amenities for large portions of our stay amounts to robbery in my book. We had to call the front desk four times at midnight for them to even act concerned about the amount of music coming from the rooms due to the types of people these loud music festivals attract.
The grounds are incredible. If you want to make your friends jealous with a great photo then this is the place. The food is good too. Sadly, that is where the positives end with Yangshuo Sugar House.
