How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews

For these people with high standard this wont be the right hostel. Showers are very simple for example.
The host owners were really friedly. Really family. I can recommend the hostel for everyone with not that high Standards. We liked it here.

Meryscar is a lovely, homely hostel away from the busy main street of Tortuguero. If you enjoy relaxing in a hammock watching the world go by without breaking the bank, this is the spot for you. Scarlet is an excellent host, helping arrange everything you need (tours, transfers etc) at good prices. She was kind enough to store my bicycle & bags when I moved to another hostel (that I had booked previously) and I chose to stay at Meryscar again afterwards. Nothing bad to say!

The family made my stay the best experience, very helpful and communicative. They helped with what to do, booking tickets online and organising tours for me. A kitchen was available to use The facilities may be basic but everything was kept clean.

Couldn't make the hot water woek if there is any? You don't get a key for the front door so felt bad to wake up the owners when I was coming back late

I really loved this place ! You can get an inexpensive private room. The rooms are basic and clean, kitchen available. The terrace is nice to hang out with hammocks. Water pressure is good. That’s all what I need. If you are looking for a fancy hostel of course you will have to search for another price section. My stay at Meryscar was unforgettable. Especially because of the owners. Scarlet and her brother Eddie are so lovely heartwarming people. They made me feel like home. Scarlet is always there to help. If you have questions or concerns she is always willing to find a solution to make you feel happy. She is amazing and even offered me to do my laundry. You can feel that Scarlet and Eddie do the things by heart. I loved the positive energy the owners spread and i would always come back. thank you :)

The kitchen and the baths are kind of "outside". It is normal there and was not too bad.
I had such a great time there. The "hostelmum" was so nice, I felt so welcomed and comfortable. Great hammocks with a great "jungle view". Really enjoyed it there!

Ventilation in the room could have been better.
It's a family owned hostel and they are always there, so that's definitely a good sign. They are kind people and will help you or guide you if you need anything. Even though the rooms are modest, then you will probably use the room only for sleeping. During the daytime you can chill outside in the garden, hang in a hammock, or go to the beach with bare feet (ca 100 meters). It's relaxing and quiet there. I wish them success!

The toilets need to be upgraded.

There was insects eating us during the night and no mosquito net in the room.
