There were so, so many bugs inside of our hotel room. Ants in our bed, spiders, and 2 lizards. It was very uncomfortable and hard to sleep when I woke up with more bug bites every morning. We booked this hotel for the La Senda garden and farm-to-table experience. It wasn’t until we were checked into the hotel that the staff told us the gardens were a 35 minute drive from the hotel. That would have been really nice to know ahead of time. We even specified in our hotel reservation that we booked this hotel solely for the garden, but nothing was mentioned about it being off-site.

On the forth day the pool was grimy and nasty. The service and communication in the restaurant and front desk was sadly disappointing. This is not a good value for your money as of now, we had a long talk with the front desk before we left so hopefully they will improve.

Some of the staff ignored us and we felt overlooked and not welcomed at times. I’m a black woman and it appeared that my friend and I were the only black people staying at the property. We immediately noticed a difference of treatment. 30+ mins to get water while others got water upon arrival , it was a lag when it came to us to get any service. We experienced lots of stares and just rudeness from the guest there as well. I wouldn’t recommend a person of color to stay here based on the demographics we saw it’s geared and catered to older white individuals . There was a lack of diversity. If I would have known this I wouldn’t not have stayed here. In addition the food is expensive for 2 burgers / fries and 2 drinks it came to 77$. The burgers were 2 mini burgers. It wasn’t worth the price, we had better tasting food and service in the town. However we do appreciate the staff that was helpful and welcoming it’s was about 3-4 individuals we came across at the property who were nice and respectful. The rooms did have ant problem but being that it was nestled in foliage and trees I’m guessing that’s why.

All in all a quality hotel. It was our last stay in CR before returning home and also the most expensive night. This is a great hotel, really nothing to complain. After exploring inland we missed the warmth and simplicity of the country, Cala Luna caters for a luxury (US) crowd resulting in overly complex restaurant and breakfast options; All nice but personally not needed. But this is our mistake :-) Compliments to this hotel for offering a great travel experience.

No full length mirror in the room, sheets were not changed (we stayed 5 days), there were loads of ants in the bathroom, dustmites were eating at the wood in the bathroom everyday - you could hear them especially at night and there would be grinded pieces of wood around the area every morning which made my skin crawl. Overpriced for what it is.

If you like extra firm beds, then you'll be okay with them; for us they were very uncomfortable. The ceiling in the room had black mold...and a lot of it. We called immediately and were told they didn't have any other rooms. We were told they would send someone to look at it and nobody ever came. We followed up the next morning and they said they didn't see any mold. I had a photo showing all the mold and showed it to the gentleman at the front desk. He just said oh, well we didn't see that when we were just in there. We paid way too much money for a moldy room. When we checked out, we asked for a discount since we paid top dollar and were declined. We were stuck as it was late, we didn't know the area, and we had pre-paid for the room. Uploaded photo so you can see just how much mold there was, not sure how they could say they couldn't see it!

Very cool double shower in the room. The free breakfast buffet was really good. The pool was nice and staff friendly. The walkways to the rooms were very cool, lots of foliage and wildlife.

the shower heads were so old and broken that the nibs were missing and water was flowing out everywhere except properly on your head. i asked the receptionist to book a surfing class, they said they would ask the teacher if there was availability and then let me know by either sending me a whatsapp message or calling me. Neither was done. My Room was not cleaned after the first night. For such prices, you would expect that these minimum things work.

My reservation was under "French". The place was not clean. Especially the restrooms in the lobby were filthy. we decided to leave after the first night, we just did not trust the cleanliness of the kitchen and rooms, if the lobby was so dirty.

We desperately wanted to stay at Cala Luna based on reviews and made an effort to fit in a one night stay, mostly for the complimentary yoga classes advertised all over the website. I reviewed the timetable and determined that we could check-in, take the 4 / 4:30pm class and the 7:30am class the following morning before checking out (note this schedule has since been removed). We arrived to find out that this is completely false and inaccurate advertising - there were no yoga offerings during our stay, no indication ANYWHERE that there were no classes during this time (being peak season with a full hotel), and when directed to the wellness manager for our concerns, the response that came back was a very frustrating 'it is what it is' attitude - very unlike all other service experiences in Costa Rica. Notices suddenly appeared with the revised timetable in the morning- would have been helpful before an inconvenient hotel change - a huge disappointment. The location is very secluded - they offer hotel taxis to town (not free) and when we left for an 8:30pm dinner reservation we were told to call for a pickup, however the front desk failed to mention the service ended at 10pm. At 10:15 when we called after dinner, we were stranded and spent 45 minutes waiting for a taxi to take us back, frustrating both us and the dinner staff stuck waiting with us. The room was visually beautiful, but the air-conditioner did not work and we spent a very miserable night trying to sleep in the heat. Grounds / restaurant staff were very friendly, but the front desk made us feel like we were bothering them with any questions / requests. Reviews also raved about the breakfast so we were really looking forward to this - it is a buffet, decent selection, but nothing special and by far the worst breakfast offering of the hotels we stayed at while in Costa Rica (one also in Tamarindo).

The premises are absolutely stunning - you will see the grounds crew working tirelessly to keep the property and plants in pristine condition. Kudos to the team, the ambiance and sheer beauty of the property was the highlight of our stay. Enjoyed seeing the monkeys on the premises, and sunset drinks on the beach was a big plus. We found an incredible beachside massage offering (not affiliated with the hotel) just on the beach that made the whole stay worthwhile.

When we got there no one was at the reception or helped with the luggage, the welcome part needs some improvement. There are many staff people but no sense of personal service that we got in other places in Costa Rica. Breakfast is ok, nothing impressive. We came for our honey moon but felt that there was nothing special about the stay there.

Felt like we did not get enough for the amount we paid. Firstly, we paid extra for “Adult Only” which did not give us any extra perks whatsoever. Secondly the staff at reception were not very friendly and did not offer to help my wife with her bags while showing us to our room. For paying “luxury” price, we were not treated as such. It was also quite far from town, 25 min walk, but they did offer free bikes to borrow.

The breakfast was great, most of the staff were really nice. Private secluded room with beautiful foliage surrounding.

For a property of this quality the food was poor. The fact that they offer cooking classes as a feature is laughable. The restaurant appears to be very unprofessionally managed.
