The kitchen was small for the number of guests staying there (one stove and one sink). It wasn’t an issue however during my stay. I never had to wait to prepare my meals. There were also plenty of seats and tables in each common area to eat my meals. The single room’s windows open to the back common area. That common area however is closed and locked between 22:00 and 7:00 the next morning. My sleep was never interrupted by noise from the common area.

A well run hostel by a “hands on” owner who has put a lot of care in creating and managing the place. Both the owner and his staff were all very friendly and interested in chatting with their guests. The owner actually works the day shift (at least the days I was there) so he was very present to ensure a good stay. There was also staff there 24 hours a day. Chillout Hostel had two common areas. One area was in front of the building (but fenced in and behind the secured entrance gate) and was a nice place to enjoy breakfast or coffee. The second area was in the back of the building (and also enclosed). There were also seven guest rooms, a combination of dorms and private rooms. The social scene was nice, but certainly not a “party hostel.” The common areas (particularly the back common area) and kitchen were closed off at 22:00 to ensure a quiet night. They reopened at 7:00 the next morning. I found the neighborhood to be safe, certainly safer than other parts of San Jose. There were restaurants and grocery stores with a few blocks of the hostel. The hostel was a fifteen to twenty minute walk to the city center.

No AC, only fan, which helped a lot! A little bit noisy so you can hear the rooms next to you, but with earplugs it's all fine.

We stayed in a private room with private bathroom which was great, super clean, spacious and had hot water in the shower. There is a nice communal space and kitchen with delicious free coffee. The reception staff was amazing, gave us recommendations and tips for buses. Shops and restaurants nearby and close to downtown San José.

I only stayed here one night as a stopover, but the beds were comfy and quiet, the facilities were clean, and the staff was very helpful. Food places and grocery store in walking distance and neighborhood felt safe.

Super chill, lots of areas to sit and meet other people. The CLEANEST hostel kitchen I have ever seen or used! Very lovely staff who were more than willing to help with any request.

It was a nice hostel. Good for a chill, quiet time. Not what I would consider a "fun" hostel.

The location was the best part. I was able to meet people and make friends from all over. Staff was awesome. It was quiet which is a good and bad thing. No noise allowed after 10 pm which put a damper on things.

Great location in a safe neighborhood. The hostel is clean and well maintained, and the staff and owner Andy were very helpful with information about connections/ongoing travels. The website also has a comprehensive and linked list of bus routes and things to do in San José.

The only thing that was a bit odd to me is that the rooms are not locked and you'd need a personal lock for your locker. But as it's a small hostel and people were really thoughtful and respectful with one another it didn't seem to be an issue.

I spent my last night before going home at Chillout Hostel Barrio. Every staff member was extremely nice and helpful with whatever could be needed. There are multiple bathrooms available which were all super clean at any given time. Kitchen felt like you're at a friend's house, super cozy and it's been really nice to enjoy the free coffee. Supermarkets and restaurants are within walking distance.

The rooms are a bit dark with not so much frech air. But the staff tries to ventilate as good as possible so it's ok.

I arrived in the middle of the night and even though the check in is only till 10 or sth they waited for me! Perfect Hostel if you look for a quiet place to stay. Lovely girl at the reception.
