No wifi throughout our four day stay. Ran out of certain soft drinks, including bottled water! Management seemed insincere and we felt like excuses were being made about the lack of wifi. First it was because a part had to be sent for, then it was that it would be sorted that afternoon, then it wasn't sorted at all. Also, it is down to management to make sure that deliveries are arranged for things like said soft drinks and bottled water. Although we were happy to drink the tap water, other guests did not feel comfortable in doing this, so it made them feel uneasy.

The bar / pool area was ok. The support staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome.

The rooms were infested with mosquitos and bed bugs. The manager was a disaster to deal with. He made us feel like a complete inconvenience, often completely ignoring us when we asked him to organise excursions for us. The boat transfers were outrageously priced. Do not stay here!

It’s very dirty, blood stained sheets bugs and roaches in the rooms. The manager Tumali (I think that’s his name) was rude and unhelpful. Had to ask 3 or 4 times for him to do literally anything as small as getting fresh towels (we waited 2 hours for towels and hassled him 3 times to get them.) The other staff were lovely but it’s definitely run down and overpriced for how gross it is.

The chef Happi was awesome, accommodated my husbands seafood allergy for every meal and was very friendly!

Hot shower & lovely staff (except for manager) - but avoid their stand-up boards.

CONS My partner and I went for a stand-up ride and both our standups started to sink 15min after we went into the ocean. The bottoms of the standups were damaged so it was filling with water as we paddled. My partner had to swim his way back, while I was lucky enough to be able to paddle almost the whole way before mine sunk too. I managed to ask for help and a lovely staff member (named Happy) didn't think twice before swimming towards him to help him come back and bring the standup (thanks for saving the day Happy!). It was pretty scary, but what makes me really angry is that they were aware that the standups were no good, and after I reinforced it to the manager, she just ignored me, gave me a half-smile and kept the paddles available for use.$ I personally believe they shouldn't be available for use or guests should, at least, be informed that they shouldn't go too far with them. ---- The manager itself was also quite lovely on day one, but by our last day at the place, she was being really rude for no reason. An example was that on our last day, we asked if we had enough time for a half-day trip before checkout and she replied "Don't worry, of course you do". When we came back from the trip and needed to check out, I asked "Hey there, how are you?" the response was a rude and sharp "$550" (which was our bill). I literally took a second to understand what she was saying so I asked "Sorry, is that our bill?" and another rude "$550" was her response again. She repeated it 3 times. I don't even know what exactly we were paying for as she didn't give a lot of room for questions there. I understand we were in a hurry to take the boat back to the mainland, but she had 2 or 3 hours to close our bill before we went on the day trip and chose to do nothing, so I just think some kindness (and time management) will go a long way here.

PROS The best thing about this place was that our bungalow actually had a hot shower (despite all accommodations saying they offer hot showers). It was the best shower we had on the islands. The kitchen staff was absolutely lovely & the place/garden is beautiful and well-maintained. The sheets were clean and the swimming pool was a bonus too! -----

The facilities were terrible, seems like they don’t do any maintenance. Everything is old and not comfortable. They didn’t have any chair on the pool or on the beach, Wi-Fi does not work, the food was ok but lunch you could not choose anything, there were not food or snacks between the regular meals, their bar pretty much didn’t have anything. Staff didn’t seem to be very happy and friendly as the other resorts where we stayed. The stand up paddles both were sinking while using. There were mozzies EVERY WHERE all the time! This place is a type of “HOSTEL” and not a RESORT! Unless you are a surfer backpacker on your 20’s p I don’t recommend it for you.

of the day. I have the video footage of the two guy surfers yelling to the driver "It's a set, get out of here! We need to get out of here!" We could have easily dropped in as the peak was within 6 ft of us. Praise the Lords the boat started in the nick of time because we were positioned to jump off in the next few seconds to the back of the wave. All of the other boats watching were shouting and came up to us after in shock. Covid testing here is also a joke. First, it took 3 days of asking to do it to eventually get it down. The front desk person acted like we were inconveniencing them each time. When it finally happened, they resulted the test immediately. I am a covid tester in addition to the fact they were the same antigen tests the state of Hawaii uses which require 15 minutes to result. Lastly, during our 3 hour unintended boat ride after flying in on a red eye, we asked to get off at Cloud 9 when they were dropping others off there because the boat driver said he STILL wasn't going to take us to Funky Fish yet and had 2 other drop off/pick ups. The boat was planning to pick up from Cloud 9 at 2:30 already, so my thought process was instead of sitting on the slow ass boat transporting people, let's grab a beer and start out Fijian vacation at no interference to the drivers schedule. They ended up charging us $169 EACH at the end of the stay for that. I was ready to end our vacation early if this was what visiting Fiji was like. Luckily, it's NOT! It is SO WORTH paying a little more, let me tell you. Our next place was MAGICAL and we will be back. Be sure not to stay at Beachcomber or Anchorage as it's owned by the same as Funky Fish. I will say the lunch and dinners are phenomenal and Max in the kitchen is so great! The women also in the kitchen is great too. She works hard and provides great service. This could be a great property. So much potential in the property.

DO NOT STAY HERE! Unless you are a group of surf bros that are trying to surf cheap and don't care about cleanliness or getting to the surf on your own time. First, they will be late picking you up from the airport. Second, they will corral you onto one of the slowest boats in Fiji and tell you they are headed to Funky Fish. THREE hours later... you will find yourself STILL on the boat because they picked up and dropped off others are various stops. TAKE THE MOLOLO CAT FROM PORT DENARAU to get to and from Funky Fish is my biggest advice if you don't want to waste an entire day or miss your flight (a couple missed theirs leaving due to this). The rooms have a HUGE bed bug infestation. So bad that many of the Fijians in the city know of this and told another guest we met before she arrived to not go. Many of the other guests had the itchy bites all over them and I found the casings, eggs, and ink like markings on the bed and in the night stands. One of the other guests we met got in around 10pm and they didn't even change over to clean his room for him, he had to sleep on someones old sheets. Surfing will happen on their own time despite what gets planned the night before. The boat driver will even fish on the way out which was fun when we caught the first fish, but not so fun when he proceeded to fish another 30 minutes and cut into our cloudbreak surf time. I paid to stay on the boat to watch my photograph my partner surfing and instead went fishing even more. When I spoke up, he took me back to the break, anchored, and then eventually hopped onto another boat to fish without telling me and I found myself alone on the boat with the anchor dragging toward the reef. At the end of that session, we picked up 2 of the surfers and then the driver went INTO the break. This wouldn't maybe of been too much of an issue with the right driver and boat, however, the boat at Funky Fish DOESN'T always start!!! It takes many tries.

The mosquitos in the area were pretty hectic - make sure to bring heaps of repellent.

The vibe at funky fish was amazing. It wasn't a family resort. It was more like a hostel, but with private rooms. By the end of the first day I had met most of the guests who were young travellers and surfers. The staff were super laid back, friendly & welcoming, it was a no thrills kind of stay - not a fancy pants resort by any means - although I have to give a shout out to Max who was an amazing cook! Despite the laidback vibes, Tumelli the manager was on top of things and sorted us out with what we needed. Overall this was exactly what I was looking for on my trip - I loved it.

Funky fish! What a place. We were welcomed on arrival by the very gracious Tumeli, who throughout our stay took very good care of us. From organising daily trips (cloud 9, Mala Mala etc) to transfers to different islands. It's a simple, relaxed, easy going surf vibe. Max cooks the best eggs every morning, whilst you sit in the shade over looking the ocean. The pool is kept beautifully clean and it fortunately cold - very much needed in the hot Fiji sun! We stayed in one of the basic beach huts with a fan, would reccomend an air con room if you're a light sleeper. But can't really complain when waking up to the incredible view of the sea every day. Thank you for the great time!

Other staff seemed like they weren’t interested in helping and it could at times be difficult to get service from the front desk and bar. Prices were very much upped, a can of insect repellent was $15FJD when it’s $10FJD at another resort on the island. There is no such thing as being punctual when it matters, one example is we did a cloud9 trip and our small group of 5 were half an hour late, arriving after two large tour boats so there was no seating left. Felt more like an expensive home stay but it could be because it was low season and not busy.

Great views. Manager and another attendant called Max were very helpful and accommodating. You don’t go hungry with the included food package.

Was confusing to get there now we know. They have their own boats do not use south sea cruises when you get to the port they will try to convince you. Go to the Beachcomber stand in the port and they will check you in etc.

Funky Fish was brilliant, Tumeli was a wonderful host from arrival to departure we were taken care of. The cook Max exceeded all expectations for the food he has passion and a smile with every meal. All of the staff were friendly. The snorkelling out the front of the property was unbelievable. Don't expect a 5 star hotel but what it lacks in facilities it makes up with the staff and the relaxed atmosphere.

Getting the island is difficult - we booked transfers through the hotel, which were not cheap, and did not meet the service level promised. Management at the hotel were unfortunately infamously difficult to get things done with. Simple tasks like organising a boat trip, a covid test or paying our bill turned into affairs of hours of confusion and delays, which unfortunately really detracted from the trip.

Beautiful location, with mostly friendly staff and fantastic food. Max and the team were brilliant in the kitchen, despite not running a menu, their daily specials were always tasty a good mix of local and western food.

The facilities are worn down, and towels, bedsheets and cutlery have clearly seen better days, probably some decades ago. The electric kettle looked like a museum artefact and had some weird chemical smell to it. There were ants all over the room. The worst part however was poor management. The resort is short of boats but they don't tell you that, rather the manager stuffs you around and keeps you waiting while making up excuses. Every 15 minutes you get told a different story. They will not bother organising boat trips when they're using the boat for a bigger group. This could have been managed by coordinating with the guests as many people are interested in same activities. Contrary to older reviews, non-motorised water activities aren't free anymore but you only find out when you check out as they're added to the bill. They're not expensive though, but the annoying part is that you don't get told upfront. The only thing that the manager did not waste time with was getting me to check out of the room asap while I had to wait for my boat to mainland, not being told the exact time of departure, finally departing at 3 pm while waiting in limbo on the deck all morning. Perhaps some things like ferry times aren't in the control of the resort but communication is. I do not recommend for non-surfers and people who aren't in large groups as there isn't much to do, and they won't make activities happen if they don't have a larger group on the boat. Needless to say, there is basically nothing to do on the island if you're not in the water. Forget swimming as the water is only about knee-deep for miles.

The staff were friendly and helpful. Great place to meet and interact with other guests, met some really cool people there. The food was decent given that it's an island. I'd give the staff 10/10 rating but the management deserves a flat out zero.

It was dirty and needs maintenance attention. room had not been cleaned prior to my arrival. the dust buildup from nearly 2 years of closure was disgusting. most of the staff were wonderful and attentive - Max and Mela were awesome. the manager Tomeli could use a lesson in customer service and basic courtesy. I asked for a pool day on day 1 to which he replied “yes of course.” He then napped in a beanbag by the pool for nearly 2 hours. the following day the entire staff was hungover and when I asked for something, he told me to be patient because they had little sleep. when I inquired about scuba, snorkel and island hopping he said he would check and get back to me but never did. I cut my stay short because it was so awful despite having paid up front for the entire week. I was then told they it would cost me $310 for a boat to leave the island because no one was arriving. they negotiated down to $200 (normally $64) and when the boat dropped me off in Nadi, two guests were boarding for transfer to the resort. Clearly the story about no boat was to squeeze more money out of me. this place is a dump. don’t go!!

the bures were cute from outside and hearing the waves crash all night was lovely.
