    No complaints at all

We have visited Belcastel previously and promised ourselves an overnight stay at Le Vieux Post - it was worth the wait in every way. Hotel room was excellent with everything we needed and more - air conditioning above all in this season, but also view onto river and castle, every convenience in bathroom and room generally excellent. And of course a magnificent dinner in the restaurant over the bridge. Staff everywhere helpful to the nth degree.

Fabulous accommodation in one of the "most beautiful villages in France"

As mentioned before, the restaurant is very expensive, overly so in our view, especially if you intend to have wine (and who doesn't?). But also, the establishment is eccentric in that both the hotel and the restaurant are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. We would have liked to stay for two nights, but as our first night was on a Sunday, we could have the one night only. Frankly, however, we were lucky to get anything, having made our bookings too late for the French holiday season.

My wife and I stayed at Le Vieux Pont in Belcastel as part of a trip in honor of her 70th birthday that consisted largely of visiting a series of villages officially listed as among "the most beautiful in France". Belcastel certainly deserves to be on that list; it is a breathtaking gem of a restored medieval village in a lovely setting. Le Vieux Pont has both a hotel and restaurant in the village on opposite sides of the (magnificent) old bridge for which they are named; I review them together. The hotel is a modern, cleverly designed, tasteful, and, I would say, "up-scale" place (with, as I recall, only seven or so rooms) in a beautiful old stone building on the river. We found our room to be extremely clean and comfortable: a large-ish room with a very comfortable bed, excellent climate control—which was very important, because we were there in the midst of a horrid heat wave—good internet connection, various thoughtful amenities and a large, luxurious private bathroom with a bathtub (toilet separate in the French manner). The breakfast that was offered was a riot of excellent Continental breakfast items—too much to come anywhere close to finishing; but then we discovered that they feed the copious leftovers to the horses, so nothing is really wasted, which makes one feel smug and self-satisfied. The restaurant has recently acquired a Michelin star. The food is inventive and the presentation impeccable. And of course the service is very professional (a métier at which the French excel). But dinner at Le Vieux Pont is distinctly expensive, and the wine prices (excellent wine list!) are truly astronomical. The hotel price is more than we, of modest means, usually consider paying, but I would rate the hotel high on the value-for-money scale. The restaurant is certainly excellent, but whether it's worth the price is another matter.
