The location isn’t terrible but is still a fair trek from the station and even further from the centre and main shopping streets of York. Expect to use Ubers or taxis if you don’t want a bit of a walk back. Unfortunately one set of bathrooms were out of order during my visit, though there was another at the far end of the dormitory so it wasn’t a huge issue. I think it always needs pointing out with hostels if it doesn’t provide some form of privacy curtains for the beds and sadly the Astor doesn’t. It really does make a big difference in this kind of setting so is definitely worth investing in.

As a local to the York area I spend a lot of time in the city and stay over quite often, usually in the hostels. In the past I’ve typically used the Safestay but decided to give this one a go to see what it was like. Overall, I was impressed with this one and it definitely competes with the Safestay. The hostel itself has a very young, trendy vibe—housed in a fantastic building, it has ample social areas, kitchen and bar (with decent, affordable prices), all of which seemed tidy and well-looked after. The staff are fantastic; they’re super friendly, chatty and helpful. The hostel also offers a lot of information about local sights, events, and the like. The rooms are nice enough and beds pretty comfortable. Although the location isn’t super central it is in a nice and largely residential area. I walked back to the hostel both nights and although very quiet and deserted, the area felt safe enough. This also meant the hostel itself was very quiet at night (beside the odd guest, but that of course is outside the hostel’s control).

The location and neighbourhood was really silent, but only 15 minutes walk away from the York Minster. The staff was super friendly. The rooms are spaceous and the have a big citchen, a cozy living room, a social room and even a bar. I could leave my backpack in the morning to check-in later and it was not a problem. The beds and showers were clean. Unfortunately I was just there for one night but next time I will stay longer and I already know it will be this hostel.

The staff here r all very nice.They offer an early check in and let me stay in the common area after checking out.The bedroom and toilet r clean and tidy.The kitchen is big enough to cook even when it’s crowded.

The breakfast is good I suppose, though I never tried it because I love to cook my own food. The location is top-notch and easily accessible and bus stop is right in front of the hostel, making it stress free to catch a bus.

Nice location facilities perfect and nice. Keep up few places needs attention on cab webs to be clear in some of bathroom and bedroom. It's good for money.

Place ok but need to have female or male hostel than mixed room for those who don't mine or can manage. Some of us are not comfortable to mix room with male without knowing them or background. Also hotel cleaner to be well educate to greet when they find people in rooms when they come to lay beds and other, polite greeting will restore dignity and respect among staff and lodgers. Lastly time set for lodgers unable to use kitchen to be looked @once again. There should be a bit of flexibility because some of us use your place to stay and do some Long day shifts ,coming late and kitchen is close because late hour , l think we are adults.

Just like most hostels,there is no reliable room for quiet relaxation, study, watching mobile phone TV with earpods in peace. Always music in the bar, which drifts into lounge and kitchen, ir big tv in lounge sometimes. If I needs more peace to watch my phone i had to go to the library Snorers and one or two less friendly people can happen anywhere

Always a sociable positive vibe from the staff, it's a very friendly hostel usually. All facilities are good especially the kitchen and you can make tea anytime with milk provided. If you go there it's nice to join in the spirit of the place and talk to people and be friendly and happy

The staff were very friendly and helpful and the accommodation was clean with great utilities. The location was awesome and was only a quick walk out of town. Would definitely stay here again.

I felt the breakfast was not as expected, and could be improved.

The staff were amiable and helpful. The bed was a bit stiff for my liking but it was clean and well maintained. The washrooms were clean and well-maintained. The location is just 15 mins walk from York Station and 25 mins walk to the centre but I didn't find that a problem. The area around the stay was nice, quiet and peaceful.
