How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. There is no lift and the stairs are pretty steep. Overpriced for what it is.
Very central in the middle of town. The food was very good. The bedroom was very nicely decorated and clean. Comfortable bed and good size bathroom. WiFi worked well. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Undercover parking although not too many spaces.

Very small issue. We asked the waiter what "Wangford greens" were when we ordered our meal. As a result we were charged for an extra portion which we had not ordered. However we paid as meal was excellent.
First class accommodation. Excellent menu and food

That we couldn't stay longer 😄😄
The staff were utterly amazing throughout our stay and in fact before we even arrived. They went out of there way to be helpful and accommodating throughout our stay. We were a group of 8 that requested an extra early breakfast which the team kindly prepared for us, nothing was too much trouble. Dinner on our first night was utterly delicious. Highly recommended and we will be back. The management should be very proud of there staff, shout out to Stella and the gentlemen in the beeakfast room who was one of the senior supervisor....chef was fabulous too

We’ve stayed at the Crown many times, but this time we found the perfect room! Excellent dinner and a good breakfast, and Southwold was lovely as ever. Friendly staff and the Crown its usual lovely self, not spoilt by over-modernisation but pretty, comfortable and functional. And the weather was perfect too!

Restaurant in the evening once we had ordered our food service very slow no one checking up to see if we require more drinks had to go up to the bar.

The noisy seagulls at 0500 The many stairs to our lovely room no lift in this three hundred year old building, understandable and kept us fit! One older female waitress could have been a bit more smiley and friendly, but she did her job
We had a few issues with our room window blind and the safe access and they were dealt with immediately and efficiently which was great, thank you. Breakfast was delicious, served to us no getting up to help yourselves, how it should be. Room was lovely bright and airy. All amenities on the doorstep the town was just a stap away, all so accessible for everything.

The food was good - both evening meals were satisfactory, but not 'stand-out'.
Location - excellent. Breakfast: porridge - delicious; eggs, fried & scrambled both overcooked. Tea could be stronger!

The hotel was in a great location in Southwold which is a lovely, unspoilt coastal Suffolk town. The staff were really friendly, chatty and helpful. Apart from the first evening where we enjoyed a delicious Sunday roast, we ate out to enjoy other pubs and restaurants in Southwold, but the breakfasts were excellent.

Our room could have done with a teeeeeny bit of TLC but in no way was this a dealbreaker. It was huge and full of character... albeit a wee bit noisy on occasions.
The staff are delightful, as always; we have been visiting for many (many!) years and I love it with all my heart - it's a very special place for me.

The stairs are very steep with no offer to help with luggage. The hotel is quite tired.
Location excellent, right on the High Street. Breakfast was very good. Nice cosy bar. Clean and good sized room. Comfy bed.

Something beyond your control! The extremely noisy seagulls outside the window at 5.30 am.
