Lovely staff + building but we were a little disappointed

We had a room in the gardens; it was sizeable but not impressed with the furnishings and it was a quite a long walk across the gardens (which were a bit muddy at the time) or at least 5-10 minutes around the roads. Also we were surprised that a 4 star hotel did not have a safe or a fridge in the room and none of the windows would open so you had to sit with the door open to get fresh air into the room. I would add that all of this is a personal opinion and some people may love these large open rooms in a very quiet part of the grounds, but not great for us. Finally the spa/swimming pool was open 7am to 6pm and as we do not do early mornings these days, closing so early in the evening when you have been out on visits to the wonderful surrounding area, did not work well for us. Food in restaurant acceptable but not fantastic or great value for money.

Staff were all very friendly and helpful; main building interior was very impressive, especially the main stairs.

Property is dated and needs a really good deep clean. Many of the staff are young and need proper training in the proper manner to speak to guests. Overpriced for what you get.

Attractive property, and has potential to be a really good hotel, but the stuff need proper guidance

Sadly we had a room that was adjoining so the people in the next door may as well have been in with us, because we could every word of their late night drinks with friends. Needs sound proofing. For me I felt the food was grossly overpriced and I don't like gratuity added without consent.

Gorgeous building, lovely garden for a walk and very helpful staff

The coach houses are a little way from the hotel and spa which may put some people off with the ‘there and back’ for spa and restaurant depending on the weather with a short walk. Also very grumpy cocktail bartender who clearly had no people skills - rest of staff friendly though. Spa ok, could definitely make improvements there and to the bar area to make it look and feel more expensive, given the rest of the building and price paid.

The coach house was excellent, lovely rustic barn room with a modern twist, beautiful location and excellent food.

A dress code should be advised for diners in the lovely restaurant. In such a beautiful environment we found it shocking that we saw some diners at dinner wearing jeans and tee shirts. The spa area is not to the high standard of the hotel, it is characterless and not at all pleasant to be in and needs a complete makeover.

The hotel is an exceptional building with historic character rooms. The staff are delightful, the dining area is very tasteful and the food delicious

The service in the restaurant could be improved. A lot of inexperienced young staff and the menu was limited and expensive. This did not spoil our holiday though

The location for everything we did and saw that week was first rate. The hotel grounds were very special as was the hotel .

We didn't realise that the room we booked was a good 5 minute outdoor walk to the main building where the restaurant was situated. We felt that all the meal menus were overpriced. Of course it was great to have a high class menu, but even the marketplace menu was prohibitively expensive and rather limited.

Very comfortable deluxe place. Breakfast plentiful and nicely presented. Pool and sauna easy to use and never overbusy when we tried it. Staff friendly and helpful. Lots of reception rooms and a library all of which were available to sit in quietly.

The entrance to the gardeners cottage we stayed in was dirty. Full of cobwebs, which had clearly been there some time. There were also bottles of cleaning products left on the window sill. The Library where we went for drinks in the afternoon had loads of dirty plates and glasses in it. There was a large scale function taking place which meant some areas were no-go, it also impacted parking. I had emailed ahead about using the EV charger, but non EV cars were parked literally anywhere they could (including grass verges) due to the large number of people attending the conference i assume, so I was unable to charge as there is no clear signage to discourage anyone parking in a charging spot.

The dinner in the main restaurant was of a very good quality, and the service was superb. The room itself was nice once inside

We were in the stables block, a short walk from the main Hall. It was like having a little cottage in the country. The large, tastefully furnished room was warm and comfortable with a spacious, well equipped ensuite. The private garden was immaculate and parking for the stable block was nearby. The grounds and nearby lake are great for walks.

Happy with most things. If I could think of anything it would be a mini fridge in room if you stayed longer to keep items cool.
