How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

the way other room guests just leave their items sprawled over the floor close to their bed but immediately below or around the ladder to the upper bunk. Lockers are provided but some guests are "reluctant" to get them as it requires a £10 deposit - even though you get it back upon check-out...yes, deposit is refunded but still not everyone takes it and prefer to leave their bags, clothes, shoues scattered around the place and ladder. So inconsiderate, so I took absolute pleasure in kicking their stuff further away so that I had a clear passage when coming down the ladder and also walkig to my locker

no elevator but understandable if old type of building as designed. on first day, corrider / hallway to the room and toilet smells bad but next day it was correct / or gone.

Have to climb many stairs if your room is on the top floor. The bathroom is quite small.
It's nice old traditional scottish building which is beautiful and it is located in a very good area...

Shampoo and shower gel not being provided was a small inconvenience.

Busy (understandable as it is close to The Royal Mile) so not the most relaxed place.
Decent kitchen, nice to have a good sized locker by the bunk. Not difficult to find just so long as you do not treat Google Maps as gospel...

Bathrooms - just need updating.
Location was perfect. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Shower facilities and bathrooms could do with an update. Lounge and kitchen areas good.

Check in it’s to late and the check out it’s to early! The breakfast for £3 it’s cheaper, but they removed everything just after 10am!

Bed was enough to get the job done, but was one step above a pillow on a board. But you don't go to hostels for anything more than a roof while you sleep.
I liked the lounge and the chill vibes. Location couldn't have been better. The hostel activities that night were amazing, went to go watch live music and learn some traditional Scottish dances, then listened to a modern band and danced till 3 am. That night in itself made my whole trip worth it.

There's a scope of improvement in maintaining the room and bed cleanliness. Please ensure all the sheets and pillow covers provided are of good condition I've stayed in many hostels before and there are good hostels providing cleaner sheets and bed at the same price

The rooms could use some improvement, even though you sleep at a hostel, having privacy, even if it’s just curtains around your bed, is becoming a standard around the world so some renovation of sleeping spaces would be nice.
Location was very convenient, everything was a short walking distance away, which gave me a lot more time for exploring the city. The staff was very helpfull and nice to us. There was a very nice social space with a few music instruments, pc games and table games, billiard and a small smoking terrace - great for meeting other people and just hanging around. Also, hot water was running at all times, which is sometimes hard to come by in other hostels, when there’s so much people at one place.

Bathroom is just super small. Changing clothes especially if you're sharing rooms would be super messy
