How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

The very well fitted kitchen had a lovely table with four stools but they were not very comfortable for sitting on for any length of time. It was absolutely fine for breakfast but not for a longer meal!
The house was very well appointed and parking was easy. We were two couples. The bedroom that my husband and I had was the larger of the two and was very comfortable. There was actually enough room for an en suite in our room which we think would have been a bonus. We shared the bathroom facilities with my cousin and her husband without a problem luckily! All equipment that we might have needed was available. Unfortunately the pubs in Allendale Town were not serving food so we had to take a drive into Hexham one night and Heddon on the Wall on another. We were very impressed by the friendliness of the local residents, one couple recommended where to eat in Hexham. The owners of the property had left a number of very useful leaflets and information was also available on their website about local attractions etc. We would definitely stay at the cottage again and would recommend it to others.

Well equipped. Great location. Clean and in a great location. Found the folder of wifi code/utility instructions/food recommendations etc very useful. Other reviews mention a blind needed in the bathroom - there is one now.

There was no hot water on the morning we checked out.
Everything was easy to use / find, communication was great. Welcome basket was a nice touch. Beautiful property, no problems at all! Shower was great. Cottage was just as seen in the photographs online.

The cottage was modern but still cosy and so comfortable. It had everything we needed for a relaxing break. The location was fantastic. Every shop etc you needed in the village. Easy access to the Lake District, Hadrian's Wall, Carlisle area, Newcastle. The village itself had some lovely walks and a great Indian Restaurant.

Better quality beds and frames as the current offering lets the place down and the main room an extra large double would have been nice. The bathroom needs a blind as I didn’t feel happy showering in the evening with the light on… no privacy!! There are a few maintenance issues that need addressing as not everything works and the bathroom vent flaps in the wind making a loud noise all night. It’s a nice idea having the mini ironing board just not if you’re 5’2”, as I had to iron my stuff at chest height on the island. Having said all this I would stay again.
A really lovely cottage in a quiet location and very well appointed, although we couldn’t find the egg cups !

Personally we would have preferred a small dining table and chairs in addition to the breakfast bar. The breakfast bar itself was very useful during food preparation. We found the double bed in the main bedroom uncomfortable. A blind in the bathroom would also have been appreciated.
The cottage was very clean and well decorated. Cooking and washing facilities were excellent.

Bed in front bedroom. Musty smell in kitchen. Steep stairs. Couldn't get hot water until we worked out that something needed turning on.

It would have been useful to have some form of clothes hanging in the small bedroom , we also found the ridges on the in door steps a possible hazard.
