Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomCleaning of the room each day should have happened, especially as we had paid so much extra for an upgraded room and we had pointed out the error the first time that the room wasn't serviced. The second time was very poor service. The price of wine in the restaurant for the evening meal was overly expensive and spoilt the overall experience,
Breakfast was amazing and the staff who served were excellent. The evening meal french onion soup was the highlight of the meal The room was only good after we had paid for an upgrade. The original room was not in the castle itself and was small and dark. The upgraded room was lovely, but on two days the housekeeping wasn't carried out so we had to go to get towels, tea and bin emptied etc. The first time mistake was understandable as we had changed room and the details about wanting the room serviced was not passed on. but for the same thing to happen 2 days later was very poor.

United KingdomNo hotel / dining information in the room (or on the TV in the room). No fridge in the room. Bar drinks expensive.
Spectacular castle location in a beautiful part of the country. Staff were very helpful. The room was comfortable with lovely views. We were upgraded due to a fault with our telephone. Our dinner in the restaurant was good.

AustraliaDinner & breakfast for first overnight stay was wonderful. Unfortunately asked waitress to find out what chardonnay like wines were available for dinner. We ended up with a wine that was British & tasted like a Sauvignon Blanc. We both had a taste & asked to choose another wine as we find it unpalatable. Sorry you pay 41 £ for privilege. Our waitress was lovely & felt terrible but the manager was the decision maker. Solution at least charge for cost of bottle!!!! We choose a Chablis in the end which was fine. It did spoil the experience. I ate the omelette again for breakfast the next day. It was like night & day in difference. First day was fluffy second day flat & visually unappealing. We paid for the Courtyard Superior room. It was lovely but no privacy from car parking & rear steps. Noisy from above rooms which did wake us during the evening.
Location for walking to Chester Le Street.

United KingdomThere’s nothing I didn’t like and would stay again.
It’s the perfect location, rooms are a little tired but clean and it sort of goes with the character of the castle.

United KingdomWas disappointed with no response from the hotel when we emailed with dinner reservations. I had to re email before we got a reply. My sister was really upset because she wanted to order wine and chocolates for us on our room as a surprise but again she had no email response so couldn't!!!
A return visit for our 25th wedding anniversary. We love the castle, what a fantastic setting. The room is beautiful and the most comfortable bed and pillows. We had afternoon tea and it was really nice with a good variety of cakes and very tasty scone. Staff are friendly especially in the dining room. Food is delicious.

United KingdomWe noticed a difference in our stay this time, it’s under new management and all the lovely little extras from the room have gone. It’s small things like the goody’s that make a difference! You used to get little toiletries in the bathroom, a basket with chocolate, crisps and a bottle of water on the dressing table. We didn’t even have a full size mirror I struggled to see to get ready the room was too dark. The breakfast portion was also reduced not the nice produce you used to get. Take note management and stop being stingy and put the extras back as this makes it special!
We stay at Lumley quite often throughout the year and love it. It’s location is perfect for visiting local attractions and the novelty of staying in a castle is just fabulous

United KingdomConsidering a suite booked, bottles of water and snacks could have been provided both days, making it a little more special for guests. Amenities in the room ie kettle had to be placed for the floor as it didn’t reach any plugs. Mirror facilities were poorly lite.

United KingdomUnfortunately we had some issues with the bathroom facilities being faulty and we were both disappointed with the evening meal choice in the restaurant. It saddened me to see that so much of the interior decor had been damaged in some way, showing a lack of respect from the visitors.
The building and surrounding areas are absolutely stunning. The interior of the castle is pleasantly set out and nice to be able to stop and take in the grand stature of such an old building.
