Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomEverything about our stay was fantastic, from the warm welcome on our arrival, to the staff knowing our little girls name. some of the facilities were wasted on us, as it’s a golfers dream and unfortunately we don’t play. We dined at the hotel and the food was great and children’s menus fantastic for our 3 year old. We really enjoyed a long walk on the 7 miles of beach adjacent to the hotel. The rooms are immaculate and stunningly decorated, providing everything you need for a lovely stay. This was a 40th birthday gift from me to my husband and I couldn’t have made a better choice, the staff even organised a private viewing in their on site cinema on our last evening. the location was fantastic for exploring the island, Jura and the many distilleries we were their to visit. We didn’t manage to see everything we wanted to, so definitely plan to return and already recommending it to friends and family - especially to the golfers!

The owners had obviously spent a great deal of time and money on the building, they also made sure that all their employees were top notch, every person I met was a diamond.

The Machrie is a lovely hotel and location to the Big Strand beach great for walks or short runs. Breakfasts were good.

The location and golf course are stunning and worth the ferry crossing on their own. The room (we stayed in an exec room on the ground floor) was also of a high standard featuring a super comfortable King sized bed and a large modern bathroom. nb the advantage of the ground floor rooms is that you can sit out and enjoy a pre dinner sundowner. I admit that recent negative reviews regarding the standard of food and poor restaurant service made us wary of eating in the hotel but we shouldn’t have been concerned as we found the restaurant service in particular to be exceptional attentive and friendly Admittedly the menu was limited (Covid?) and the main dishes pretty pricy but on both nights there were “specials” that were both tasty and excellent value for money. Can’t wait to go back

United KingdomThe hotel and location were excellent but the food was not of a good standard and the breakfast was appalling and had to be sent back twice. The fried eggs were hard on top and two different colours of yellow in the yoke as they had obviously been cooked and left lying on a hotplate. The rib eye steak was terrible at dinner and was inedible even after it had been sent back to the kitchen. We ate at the Harbour Inn in Bowmore twice in the evening and the food was significantly better !! There was no supervision of staff in the restaurant and this resulted in delays in being allocated a table and also in the serving of food. We had friends who also stayed at a different time than us and they experienced the same problems with food.
The hotel was excellent and well presented and the bedroom was very generous. The golf course, driving range, putting greens and the 6 hole children's course were all in excellent condition and were a pleasure to play during our short stay.

United KingdomDinner menu could be varied on a day to day basis. As there are no other restaurants near and you need to get a taxi to an alternative if you want a glass of wine the same menu every night (with some very expensive items) is not very motivating when you are staying for 4 nights as we were. Some changes every day would be welcome to guests.
Wonderful views over the golf course and to the beautiful beach. Wonderful bedroom with very comfortable bed, marvellous shower and big white towels - amazing artwork throughout the hotel - plenty places to sit and enjoy the views - lovely views from restaurant. Wonderful helpful staff especially Lorna and Angela on the front desk. Breakfasts were amazing.

United KingdomFood isn’t fantastic but is very expensive. Teeny portions and not a huge choice. Spa wasn’t open which is a shame for golf widows like me 🙃
Stunning location. Great golf course. Staff are lovely. Rooms are super clean and gorgeous. The guy in the pro shop (sorry can’t remember name!) is great and my partner said he was really helpful and knowledgable. The beach down from the golf course is beautiful.

United KingdomBooking.com listing made it sound like our room would be ground floor and have an outdoor seating area, which was why I paid for the more expensive Exec Double. Be warned this is not the case - ground floor / terrace rooms must be specifically requested if booking this category; we were in a first floor room with a Juliet balcony and no outdoor seating. The bedrooms are big but are not equipped with two comfortable seats - luckily the lounges are great, but given the pandemic we would have preferred a private area to retire. Staffing at the restaurant/bar was hard working but chaotic (maybe a person down?), with orders forgotten and wrong charges put on the bill (fixed immediately once pointed out, but worth checking before you sign!) Be patient and kind, they are trying - it’s a tough gig in these difficult times. Minor gripes - it was a lovely stay if not a flawless one.
Very comfortable rooms with fine views, good restaurant and access to plenty of lovely lounges for a drink or a quiet read. Sadly many services limited due to COVID, but still a luxurious spot for a few days. Try the house gin!

United KingdomRestaurant staff were in need of further training, but this was experienced at various places throughout our holiday due to the apparent lack of available staff in the hospitality sector as a whole.
The resort is really well set up and catered for all our needs, the highlight, though, was the course which is outstanding.

United KingdomLimited restaurant menu. Packet chips. Poor quality cooked breakfast. The food offered was at odds with the ambiance of a beautiful restaurant and excellent service. Room service misfired on occasion. Noisy bathroom extractor fan operated 24/7 and all suggestions failed to remedy this issue. Room telephone on the ground floor. Could do with a second phone upstairs. No ice compartment in the fridge. Missed ice in our Pre dinner drinks
A really classy upgrade. Our first visit since the refurbishment. Ben Hogan duplex suite was luxurious and comfortable. The photos do not do it justice. Huge bathroom with bath (with a grab rail) and excellent roomy shower on the ground floor. Spectacular view from your bed! Over 18th towards the sea. This view repeated upstairs in the classy lounge/dining/kitchen area. Full, well equipped kitchen. Staff especially reception could not do enough for you. Restaurant staff extremely hospitable They made a fuss of us as it was our Ruby anniversary in our honeymoon hotel.

United KingdomWouldn’t complain about anything. If you’re on a budget the bar/ restaurant prices might not be for you every night.
Good big open rooms. The lounge area offers amazing views over the golf course and landscape surrounding. Bar and restaurant offer a wide ranging menu and good breakfasts. This is the perfect location from which to explore magical Islay. If golf’s not your thing there’s a beautiful big white sand beach behind, offering great scenery and sunsets.

Everything - from the helpful and caring hotel staff, amazing food perfect location and great golf facilities. We loved having the hotel cinema for our own use and the range of delicious vegan and non vegan meals meant we didn’t need to leave the comfort of the hotel and it’s views at night. The wild deserted beach walks were stunning and my husband loved the golf course, practice areas and super golf pro staff. We felt completely relaxed, COVID measures were in place but our stay felt normal which was so nice. Finally Islay people are wonderful, so welcoming - we will come back for sure.
