How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

There is actually nothing where I could say that I didn't like it. Having a fridge/minibar in the room would be nice. Otherwise, nothing was really missing or bad in particular... walking for/from city centre is still possible although not very close.
Room was very comfortable and clean. I appreciate the possibility to make a cup of tea of coffee. Breakfasts were really great with a lot of options including Scottish breakfast. The location was relatively convenient although not the city centre (bus stop, park, and stores nearby).

The breakfast could be more varied. I liked it, but there were few options to take.

Perhaps do a maintenance on the elevator, did some noises but honestly, I liked it all!
It was strange to get there as it is in the university campus, never seen that before. But it is a very new hotel, very clean and calm. Close to town centre. The night receptionist was super friendly and welcoming.

The location of the hotel was excellent, a bit of a walk into the centre but very pleasant. Breakfast was perfect, plenty of choice and staff were very friendly and accommodating. Couldn’t have asked for more.

This is our 3rd stay at The Scholar. It a 45 minute walk from the hotel to Princes Street. We love walking; If not a walking fan; you can get a bus on Dalkeith Road. The rooms are lovely, very comfortable bed. We had a fantastic dinner, nice choice, delicious food presented. well. Staff extremely friendly & helpful.

Bit further out of town than I imagined, also the room could do with some hangers for coats, and not much space between the end of the bed and the wall.
Nice big comfortable bed with crisp white linen. Coffee machine and plenty of tea bag choices. Great breakfast in nice airy dining room. Courteous and friendly staff. Cracking spacious shower and bathroom.

It is pretty normal for pet friendly hotel, but there were a bit of pet hair on the duvet and the chair. Acceptable to be honest, just... it's me on that. Room on the coldest day was pretty cold, and no way to turn the heating up(I believe it was on a centralized timer rather than being controllable from inside the room)
Easy check-in, very spacious room, clean and spacious bathroom, very comfy bed. Breakfast is really good and there's really a lot for it. Staff extremely courteous and polite.

We liked everything.
Really comfortable, spacious room. Very comfy bed. Big, modern bathroom. Located on the university campus what gives The Scholar a special vibe. Everyone fronthe staff was super nice and helpful.
