Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomWe wouldn't take a chance on room location again . Ours was on second floor up a narrow staircase so getting luggage to room was awkward. Room was spacious but was over the kitchen at rear of hotel so we had bacon odours in the morning and fishy odours later. On a warm August afternoon, with no Aircon, leaving the windows open was a difficult decision. Room decor needed a regular maintenance "operative". Paint chips and scuffs don't readily align with premium pricing. The garden is lovely but there is an area to the left of the restaurant bi-folds that needs screening off because looking at the bins and the gardener's glory-hole is inconsistent with the general aspirational nature of the place. Is reception on the first floor or in the bar? In the future we would go for a room with a view at the front of the hotel to avoid the problems noted previously.
Pleasantly located in one of Edinburgh's most popular dormitory "villages". Lovely rear garden. On trend decor. Nicely turned out restaurant. Large room. Comfortable bed. Mostly amiable staff with one or two obvious stars. (Archie). Excellent music night in the bar. Definitely likely to want to return.

United KingdomWindows in lookout room are full length and not v private. A opaque screen at bottom would be less intrusive.

United KingdomThe room was very warm but I think this was a rare summer's day with the sun beating down on our room.
The watchman was a stunning spot with lovely views of the sunset over Gullane golf courses. Plenty of great food nearby and in the hotel restaurant - the old clubhouse along the road was also yummy. The staff were very helpful when I was departing at 0610 in the morning, making sure the chefs could do something early for me to fuel me for my day! Overall the experience was positive and I hope I can visit again someday when I have more time to enjoy everything.

United KingdomI booked through booking.com so the price was extremely high, probably expected a bigger room perhaps with a couch. Tea/coffee but no biscuits which was disappointing for the price. When we arrived we were advised to go.up.to reception to check on. We both had overnight bags and, as there was no lift, had to carry them upstairs. We are both in our 60's and although relatively fit, thought an offer to carry our bags might have been a nice gesture.
Breakfast choice was fabulous and very tasty. View from the room was very nice too. Comfy and good sized bed. Food in the restaurant was very good too.

United KingdomThe other guests are mostly male golfers, but that is to be expected as there are four courses in the village. But the bar/restaurant ambience is loud and sporty. Fine is that is what you like. I prefer a quieter place.
The Watchman is a high-class hotel, but you pay for it.

United KingdomThe reception is upstairs… which might create some difficulty for accessibility
Centrally situated overlooking the golf course in Gullane, the Watchman was a great choice. Close to local amenities and a great location for visiting golfers, it was a very welcoming Hotel. Recently refurbished, the bedrooms were comfy and clean and the restaurant and breakfast “garden room” pleasant and inviting. The standard of food and service was exceptional and very reasonably priced. This was our first time staying here, but we wouldn’t hesitate to visit again. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, which was very relaxing.

United KingdomThe restaurant was closed for evening meals for the duration of my stay. When the wind blows the windows rattle as they are the sash type windows (room 14). I like to sleep with the window open slightly but when I did this the door rattled.
The breakfast was amazing, there was such a wide variety of selection and the quality was first class. The staff were extremely attentive even when it was exceptionally busy on the Thursday morning.
