The walk with luggage from paid garage parking outside the ZTL is about 10 minutes on stone, steps and narrow alleys, as is typical of a hill town in Southern Italy.. but we made it and it was worth the effort to stay here.

This accommodation is superb. It is a beautifully renovated Sassi cave home, design and amenities are wonderful. The best part is the terrace overlooking Matera. The location is excellent. Hosts are very nice, helpful, and provided delish homebaked pastries, breakfast provisions and a welcome bottle of local vino! The hosts have created a fantastic custom web portal for the property that provides excellent information on the apartment, restaurants, sites, etc. They were helpful in organizing reservations, taxis, etc. This place is a stunner.

Gianfranco provided us with a lovely welcome breakfast which was a nice suprise. This place has been renovated beautifully, and you can tell they have gone with high quality fittings etc. I booked it due to the terrace views and this did not disappoint. Our first night there we enjoyed dinner on the terrace and the stunning city views. Matera itself is an incredible city visually and wonderful to walk around and explore. There is also the lovely walk down to the creek and across the bridge to head up to the caves etc. We were given perfect instructions by Gianfranco regarding the parking and shuttle. We would love to go back and spend more time in this beautiful place.

I cannot recommend this place enough. The views are spectacular, with a fantastic location.The bathroom has a spa like feel with its huge shower in the cave and hammam sauna. Gian Franco was a great host he responded to any questions quickly, and assisted with restaurant reservations. He also arranged for the restaurant next door to serve a meal to us on the terrace. This was a real treat, very intimate with the breathtaking views.The breakfast was amazing, from a well stocked fridge to home made cakes and local bread.

The photos do not give justice to standing in the terrace in front of that view! It really gave you goosebumps walking into a cave (that had all the 5 start comforts and more) and then stepping into that terrace and taking in the history. Gianfranco was the most heartwarming host, with every detail taken into account. Make sure to book the Aperitivo on the terrace - you will not regret it. Thank you so much for the wonderful hospitality, we cannot wait to be back.

The location is excellent. The terrace is wonderful and the kitchen is well-equipped. They provide toiletries, bathrobes, slippers and an ample amount of towels. We were greeted by a friendly host who had placed some lovely cakes and cookies on the kitchen table. There are also other breakfast items such as jam, Nutella and tea and the fridge was stocked with some essentials. I would definitely recommend this place.

This cave apartment was a true highlight of our Europe trip. It is beautiful, spotless, and very homely. There were multiple nice little touches that made our stay so enjoyable. We loved the balcony with such an incredible view. Our favourite was the Turkish spa. Gianfranco was such a wonderful host and made sure that we were looked after.

Fabulous self-contained apartment located in the heart of Sassi Barisano. The rear (sleeping/bathroom) has been wonderfully transformed from a traditional cave dwelling (where the host's grandfather used to live) separated by a partition from the large and comfortable kitchen/lounge and terrace with the most spectacular view of Sassi Caveoso and the duomo. Helpful, friendly hosts with excellent communications.

This was by far the most unique home I’ve ever stayed at. It is perfectly furnished and the host was extremely nice and helpful. We even got homemade fresh cake for breakfast. Altogether I can only say it was the best experience in one of the most special cities.
