We got very detailed instructions from the host (incl. GPS locations and pictures!) how to find the place that is located in ancient city of Matera (the tip to park in the garage Via Saragat and use a shuttle was perfect). We were communicating via whatsapp prior arrival many times and were warmly welcomed by the host Giuseppe, really passionate about Matera, who provided us with sightseeing routes, restaurant tips and a map which was all very helpful since you easily get lost in Matera. The rooms, located in caves, of modern and stylish, interior climate, exceeded our expectations especially one with a well, really beautiful. The rooms are very well equipped with everything you need, nice coffee machine, a choice of fruits, yogurt, pastry and snacks prepared by the host upfront. You might want to use the heating rather than air condition if traveling in spring/winter but it worked very well. The beds were very comfortable. Our two rooms were accessible from a small yard with the possibility to sit outside and enjoy the unique climate of the place. The yard was accessible with the room key (card) or code. We could store our luggage after checking out in a locker accessible with a code which was a great solution. We appreciated the possibility to have the rooms next to each other. Our stay was absolutely incredible and Giuseppe was so informative with helping us understand Matera. The accommodation was beautiful (I am really fussy about cleanliness and it surpassed my expectation!) and our breakfast left in our room was more than we expected and such a treat. Exceptional location right in the middle of the "Sassi" but very close to the new town at just a 5 minute walk. Our host Giuseppe prepared everything we needed to know for us -from where to park the car to busses to take - and gave us all the best tips for places to see and restaurants to visit. His guesthouse is of exceptional quality, brand new restored with tasteful design interior and all the features one could wish for. His personal engagement was refreshing. Matera at Christmas time is very special and maybe a tip to consider.

Dimore dei Mercanti is a true gem in Matera. Maybe you find the idea of living in a cave strange - but this place does all the magic. Completely renovated with a lot of love for details. No kitsch - very considerate and wise architecture and especially light. Giuseppe is the best and Most enthusiastic host you can imagine. If you want to find any bad thing about staying here,I guess you may not prepare enough holidays to stay here.the location is nice,in the ancient part,but u needn’t walk too much,as the taxi is able to drop u nearby.the cave house is new decoration with more than 200 years historical things.all the equipments are new. The host is very sweet and helpful,u could get many stories about this town if you want.his English is so good,he is the best host I ever met! The breakfast is great when u enjoyed at terrace,you will see the beautiful view of city.best restaurant in town is nearby,it will take you within 1 minute.I wish I’m lucky enough to come back again

We stayed at a total of 8 hotels and B&Bs in our recent romp through southern Italy, and though they were all comfortable and hospitable, Dimora dei Mercanti in Matera stood head and shoulders above the rest—it was a memorable stay. Good B&Bs meet your expectations; great ones exceed your expectations; but the very best fulfill needs and wishes you didn’t even realize you had. That was the case with Dimora dei Mercanti. Let me provide a few details. Location: DDM is located in the heart of the historic center of Matera (known as the Sassi), a very short and easy walk from the shuttle stop (like in many Italian cities, you cannot drive into the historic center.) I want to stress “easy” because most accommodations in the Sassi require you to maneuver through a veritable maze, typically climbing up stone staircases. That was not the case with us. Also, there are many very fine restaurants a short stroll from the B&B. Facilities: SIMPLY STUNNING! The owners just finished a complete renovation of the historic building the B&B occupies. Our room was in a private courtyard which, though very secure, was easy to access thanks to the sophisticated electronic locks and private codes you will be provided with. The room was large and breathtaking, its roof a majestic arch of exposed stone, with more arches and domes extending to the bathroom. The furnishings are modern and tastefully selected creating an atmosphere that feels straight out of an interior design magazine. Extras: Giuseppe, the owner/manager has impeccable taste and is obsessed with making sure the slightest detail is just right. The ginseng-scented shampoo was amazing. You will enjoy the easy-to-use, high-end, fully automatic espresso/cappuccino machine. We put it to good use to complement the wonderful assortment of local fruit, pastries, and toasted bread with marmalade for a memorable breakfast on our very own private terrace overlooking the ancient city.

The host Giuseppe was amazing and so helpful!!! He really took care of us and explained all the highlights of Matera Sassi. The room was delightful and cosy and there was a rich breakfast we could have on the terrace. The location could not be better! When leaving there was no bus that day, so Giuseppe was so kind and accompanied us from Sassi to our car in Matera. We highly recommend Dimore dei Mercanti!

The room was great, spacious and stylish and with a local Charme of sleeping in a ‚cave‘. I especially loved the bathtub/jacuzzi in its own little grotto! Guiseppe was extremely helpful and friendly and provided great suggestion for restaurants, car parking, and day trip spots. Would definitely come back!

Central location near excellent restaurants. Our host, Giuseppe, was extremely helpful and kind. His instructions in where to park our car and where to catch the bus to the apartment was perfect. He summarized all the areas we should visit during our stay. The room was welcoming and clean. A large selection of pastries/ fruits and drinks were available for our use. Coffee capsules were also provided. The bathroom was extremely clean and modern.
