Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomA warning of the walk from car to hotel. Our room was right next to reception so a bit noisy early in the morning.
The location is exceptional, right in the middle of the ancient town. Staff were very friendly and helpful

United StatesWe had a lovely stay at this charming boutique hotel in beautiful Matera. Likely most buildings in the old city, the building used to be a church and essentially the rooms have been carved into the old rock, giving this hotel its uniqueness. The layout of our classic room spread between two levels where the bathroom was on the ground level and the upstairs bedroom was accessed via a spiral staircase. The views of the town from the room, and actually from the bed itself, were stunning. It was nice to be able to enjoy beautiful views of the town and to do some people watching from the comfort of the bed. The lower level space was limited and the staircase at first seemed like a challenge but we quickly got used to this and were happy to forego more space in order to have the gorgeous views of the sassi. The bed was super comfortable and they provide several pillows. The room was made up daily and we always had plenty of towels and toiletries. The breakfast offered lots of Italian style items (pastries, cakes, etc) as well as eggs, cold cuts, bread. The coffee was nice and strong, and we definitely enjoyed plenty of it every morning. Even though the hotel is in the heart of the sassi, it was exceptionally quiet especially in the evening which allowed for a great sleep. We had a car which we parked at the garage nearby (this was one of the recommendations from the hotel) for 25 euro per night. This was a great option since we didn't have to worry about whether or not street parking would be available and it was within a reasonable walking distance. Of note, if you do park at this garage, make sure you take the first left off the main plaza (go towards Via Rocco, there are several signs directing you to the hotel) otherwise if you follow your phone's GPS directions you may end up climbing up lots of stairs like we did.

HungaryThis hotel is wonderful. The staff are really lovely (they also gave us a great recommendation for a restaurant which uses only local produce, ask them, it was fab!) and the location is perfect; an easy walk to everything. It's so cute inside as well, just like the photos they published on here. Breakfast was great as well, and when we needed to leave before breakfast on the final morning, they packed one up for us the night before. I would HIGHLY recommend this hotel. It was perfect.

IrelandAbsolutely incredible hotel - the best I've ever stayed in by far - was blown away by the room - other reviews have mentioned that the room was humid and damp, but it really wasn't, there's a powerful dehumidifier that you can leave running while you're out and about which cancels out the humidity caused by the hot tub. The hot tub was very easy to use, the temperature could easily be changed, and they supplied bath robes and slippers to wear. We stayed in the room with a hot tub and a terrace, would 100% recommend spending the extra money on getting that room, it's well worth it. The staff were very efficient with cleaning the room, very unintrusive, we never had them knocking on the door or anything, and whenever we'd return to the hotel, even if we'd only been gone 40 minutes, they'd already have the room perfect again. Exceptional location, the view from the terrace is amazing, and everything in the Sassi is a short walk away. The staff were so helpful and kind, really made us feel at home, they were very accommodating. Organised a taxi for us to our bus upon departure, and had breakfast ready for us when we mentioned we'd be checking out earlier than their usual times Will 100% be returning, wish we had booked in for longer than the 3 nights.

MaltaAlthough we did not have facilities to make our own coffee, whenever we asked for one from reception it was provided for us there and then.
The room we booked included a jacuzzi and a small private terrace. The view from the balcony was amazing. You could directly see how old Matera developed over the years making the Hotel's location very central. The facilities in the room were very good. The breakfast selection was good and the staff were amazing! We will definitely return and stay at l'Hotel in Pietra!

CanadaDifficult to find. Horrible parking nightmare but worth it in the end. No hot water and the room was far too hot. In fairness it did cool down to a comfortable temperature and the hotel even offered tto move us to an upgraded room but it was hotter than the one we were in.
Stunning hotel in a great location. Truly a wonderful and unique experience. Breakfast was very good and I was even allowed to climb down and visit the original cistern under the floor!

United StatesBreakfast was so-so. DO PACK LIGHT! No more than a carry on suitcase. Anywhere you stay in Matera will be a challenge getting to. Underground public parking garage is reasonably near by.
Great location overlooking the old town. Incredible views, especially at night. Memorable. The jacuzzi hot tub in the room was most welcome after walking all day.

BulgariaA beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Sassi. If you are looking for an authentic "grota" experience, this is it. The room had a very high ceiling and was very cosy. The staff was very helpful, the lobby is also very nice. In front of the hotel there is an amazing view of the old town. Would definitely recommend and stay here again.

United StatesTip: Caves are humid places. Do not even try to hand-wash clothes and expect them to dry!
We were excited to stay in a cave/hotel during our trip to Matera and l'Hotel di Pietra did not disappoint! We had a beautiful, large room with jacuzzi and sauna that was breathtaking. The staff was very helpful and the communal breakfast area in the main lobby area was very good as well! The hotel was a few minute walk from a main piazza and the center of town. From the entrance to the property we had a great view of the Duomo and the Sassi. Matera was magical and staying at Pietra complemented our Matera experience.
