Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Portugalwe didn’t appreciate the way we were received by the receptionist; the lady wasn’t nice, quite rude actually, and didn’t even bother to make us feel welcomed. it is possible to feel the wear of so much tourism but still, no one wants to feel unwelcome - specially on holidays!
amazing setting, an experience to be able to rest in such a historical place. stunning views and comfortable commodities.

Spainthe room wasn’t like the one in the photos, it was a walk away from the hotel and it didn’t have any views of the Sassi like the room in the photo. also the breakfast was not the best
The location was perfect, in the middle of the town

United KingdomThe room was comfortable but better as a single room rather than a double. It would not be suitable for some visitors due to lack of space around the bed.
Superb view from bedroom. The breakfast choice was brilliant with hot drinks made to order by staff. Great terrace to have drinks on. Easy to get around to the sights. Loved the history of the hotel.

CanadaAlthough I didn't understand the location meant that you could only walk in, it would be appreciated to have a porter or someone on staff to help bring bags in. I'm sure others would pay for that service, as we definitely would.
Beautiful view over the Sassi, breakfast was a nice, fresh selection.

BulgariaAs mentioned above, it is a place for people who search authenticity rather than confort.
This is a hotel for the most authentic experience of Matera. All features on the downside: damp rooms, lack of daylight (in one of our rooms, the other had splendid view) are due to its unique position inside the cavetown. It is wonderful to have breakfast on a terrace facing the old town and to reach all places of interest within minutes.

Stoning view from the balcony and terrace! The breakfast was really good with friendly staff. Even though it was 30 degrees outside, the room was very chill without the need to use AC.

NetherlandsLots of mold in the room, even though this is understandable. Nevertheless it was not clean. There was a loud ventilation which prevented us from sleeping and could notbe turned off (next day we were told we should have called reception, but we had tried and there was no phone number...).
Location and unique experience. Large room. Nice breakfast buffet, you can sit outside overlooking the sassi.

CyprusIt was not easily accessible when we arrived and we had to carry our bags. When we left we they hotel did organise a porter which we paid for. This should be something that the hotel offers to all guests on arrival and departure free of charge.
The location was great.

United KingdomThere really wasn't anything I didn't like about this place. Apart from it's great location the staff are also extremely friendly.
Hoel Sassi's has a simply magnificent view over-looking Matera. It's a wonderfully atmospheric place and you can sit outside in the evening watching life go by for hours if you wish. The rooms are quaint and rustic and the beds perfectly comfortable. I really enjoyed the magnificent breakfast served in the morning with a wide array of local Puglian products. Perfect for your stay in Matera!

SwedenAs the room is inside the rock, there was some smell from derived from that fact. Nothing really intense, but just as part of the "construction". Also, as the hotel is in the middle of the "only pedestrian zone", it was a bit challenging with carrying the luggage from the parking to the hotel. But in the end, it is worth it
Truly a great experience. The room is inside the rock, like most houses in Matera. It was quite big,and with a small balcony facing the city and the Duomo. The hotel personell was very nice and also had a good breakfast for the guests.

This hotel has the best Matera view. I enjoyed alot to see the view from the room and the terrace. Totaly recommendable. Bleakfast is good and the room is clean and big. wifi works well. It was a bit difficult to find it at first but once you know the load, it became super easy to get there from main street. It might be a bit hard to get there if you have a big luggage though.
