The bathroom floor didn’t dry very well

The location is great, walking distance to everywhere but still quiet apart the mosques. Impressive Swahili architecture. Joshua is a very attentive and friendly.

Nothing. This was a lovely place to stay. Only issue was the noisy calls to prayer but that's part of Lamu life and cannot be changed

The location was only 10 mins walk from where the boats arrive from the airport. I have never arrived from the airport to my accommodation so fast. The house is a traditional Lamu house and is huge with lots of quirky rooms and corners. It was so full of character, I absolutely loved it. My room was the one in the picture and came with communal kitchen and own separate bathroom. The best feature however was the roof terrace with great views of Lamu and a lovely breeze to keep the heat away. This was my favourite place and I spent hours there Credit to Joshua who gave me a warm welcome and showed me how to get to the centre to do some shopping, which was only 10 mins away

Wildebeeste was one of the best stays we had during our journey. We’ve enjoyed it so much that it was very hard for us to leave again. Joshua is a very friendly host who helps you out with everything you need. The room is very spacious, clean and has everything you need, including a fan and mosquito net. It’s in an old Swahili-house where you can literally feel the long history of Lamu, it’s houses and it’s residents. You can use a well equipped kitchen and the (sea) view from the roof terrace is just stunning. Siwa, the oldest tourism guide in town, showed us around and we could profit from his experience and contacts all around town. If we ever have the opportunity, we will definitely come back.

This traditional Swahili house is full of artifacts and old tools..when we first entered we felt like in a museum. The host is a great guy, always smiling, ready to help with tips about Lamu and to accommodate all the needs you may have. He gave us a free room upgrade too. I def recommend you to stay in this fantastic place with an exceptional value for money and a great atmosphere.. location was great too!! I'd definitely go back when I'll be back to Lamu island

Comfortable hostel in a traditional Swahili house - very helpful and accommodating host

Wildebeeste is a very comfortable hostel/guesthouse in a traditional Swahili house, and it is less than 5 minutes walk from the main square and the port. Joshua the manager is very accommodating and helpful. The hostel wasn't full when I arrived, and Joshua provided an upgrade free of charge: I had a big room on the top floor (just under the rooftop terrace) with a great view of the port and the bay. I would definitely recommend Wildebeeste to other travellers - thank you Joshua!

I love the view from the roof top. Especially in the morning and evening. You can oversee the entire harbour. I also love the intricacy of the house. A great example of the lamu ancient art of building.

Finding the hostel might be a challenge. From the waterfront street, turn up where the "watermelon lady" is and follow the drain to an always on LED street light. Turn right and making one small turn arrive at the hostel. This is an amazing old building with more twists and turns, stairs and lovely seating areas. I was upgraded to a single room with an ensuite bath just below the "summit" sitting area. On a hot day, I loved the cold shower. The kitchen is great with a stove for hot water, fridge and lovely sitting area.

If it's super windy you might need to weight down the mats/blinds - they were swinging out across the room and the bed when I was there. Also, shower isn't the most private...not for prudes 😜

Lovely stay in lamu, traditional house set over multiple levels. Great views from the roof
