Location was fantastic. By the river. Prashan took us out in the canoe through the lotus fields. Magical sunset. We took a walk through the cane fields at night and learnt so much of the native surroundings. Food was amazing. Staff exceptional. Highly recommend the experience

    Absolutely nothing to dislike.

The camp was very luxurious with its own bathroom and river view. The staff were awesome they really look after you. I am a female solo traveller and felt completely safe with them. The camp included a sunset river cruise in a canoe and night walk. A trip to the elephant transit place was organised for me and for additional charge dinner was provided with fire torches and Bon fire. Five star experience and hospitality.

The location of the campsite is perfect. The staff are absolutely amazing, so helpful and so knowledgeable. The tents are really well equipped with private bathrooms. When we arrived we were given tea and coffee and then taken on the most amazing canoe ride seeing the most incredible birds at sunset. The chef is outstanding and the dinner each night was amazing. After dinner we were taken on a night walk through sugar cane fields. Everything exceeded our expectations, the safari was organised by the camp and the guide was super knowledgeable, they also arranged our visit to the elephant sanctuary. If you book please book the dinner you will not be disappointed, the fire lit setting really is dreamy. I honestly cannot thank Prashan and staff enough.

On the way there, the driver got lost 2 times, so maybe some signs would be great.

It was a real experience, sleeping in a glamping tent, listening to nature. You can see they really make an effort and are super nice. We were there with kids, and they loved running around, playing with coconuts, going on a river in a canoe, night walk, and the highlight was the bonefire with great dinner. They also arranged morning safari, which was great. Our tent was completely new, which was perfect. But keep in mind, this is still a tent so don't expect a hotel room.

Nothing. I’d happily return in future.

The tents were clean and comfortable. The food was delicious and plentiful, but you really should come for the tranquil setting in nature. Right on the water, bird sounds and sights provide the perfect backdrop. The Makulu team are so friendly and welcoming, and earn this place a 10/10.

A unique experience! The tent was spacious and had everything we needed, lovely balcony, the setting was tranquil and beautiful, dinner under the stars next to a camp fire was exceptional, the evening canoe ride was an added bonus and the staff were extremely helpful. Great for kids too. Our family loved this place and it really make an experience out of the safari at Udawalawe

Water pressure in the shower (but your camping so to be expected)

A real off grid camping experience- with some luxuries. The mosquito nets in the tent were amazing, the staff lit lamps around the campsite at night, dinner by the bomb fire was amazing food. They were also very helpful organising a driver to and from the location, helping us organise a safari etc. One night was enough- would recommend

We loved everything, the only thing we can think of is that the tents are a bit used, but they are getting new ones ready and are going to renovate the old ones

The location, it is in the middle nature so you only hear nature sounds. The food! The chef creates a table full of food.

Nothing, but this is camping so obviously you have to accept nature is there too!

So fun camping by the river surrounded by trees, wildlife and paddy fields, but in what felt like a remote place. So much nature. Tents were great with comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, and there was electricity for a fan, lights and charging phones! The meal they cooked for us was delicious, as was breakfast. Very friendly and helpful hosts, and we loved the evening jungle walk and canoe ride in the morning too.

Camping along the river was very appealing. The very strong rains made using the river impossible and it was quite damp for tenting, but that was not the fault of the proprietors. They arranged safari vehicles and guides and gave us very good advice about the length of the safari that would be best for our group.

One suggestion would be a blanket as my wife got quite cold overnight with just a sheet

It goes without saying this is not a 5 star hotel, however we knew that going in, as should you. We wanted an authentic camping experience in the wild before our safari and that’s what we got. The service and staff are phenomenal, they make it an unforgettable experience from the sunset canoe safari to the dinner under the lanterns and coconut trees. Tents are comfortable and clean but bring bug spray for outside.

We had 2 nights here and had a brilliant time! Prashan and his team couldn’t do enough for us, so friendly and helpful. The food was all amazing, fresh home cooked traditional Sri Lankan food with local ingredients- can’t stop thinking about the milk rice and curry I had for breakfast! Great, quiet place to stay right in the middle of nature- I was slightly on edge due to seeing a couple of big spiders but didn’t see any in the tent and Prashan kindly provided my boyfriend with a spider-catching coconut if we needed it!! We also went on a little canoe ride down the river which was so peaceful and lovely. Sadly we didn’t do the night walk through the sugar cane, as it was very wet and rainy but this is also available in the price if the weather is better. 100% recommend!

The only negative were the tents were a little worn but we were told they are soon to be replaced with newer models. There were also some loud bangs that kept me awake for some of the night from surrounding fields which I assume were farmers guarding their crops.

The location is beautiful, surrounded by nature. The experience as a whole was incredible. We were taken out for over an hour on a small boat for some sunset wildlife spotting where we were shown so many different species of bird. We came back to find the camp site beautifully lit with oil burners and a private table set for us in the jungle where were served a very delicious dinner. The next morning we were picked up early for the morning safari, all arranged through the camp site. The two young men running the camp could not have done more for us 😊. We had a fantastic time.

This place is set on the edge of a river backed by sugar cane fields. Its camping so we expected the bare minimum- but Makulu exceeded all our expectations. The accommodation are lovely cabins with toilets- the beds are comfortable and provide mosquito nets. You are surrounded by the sounds of nature. Preshan and Ranjan looked after us and took us on a boat ride down the river. They organised a jeep and guide to take us out for lunch and to Udawalawe to the elephant transit and on safari - he was a brilliant guide and found elephants, a crocodile, deer, monkeys, toucans, storks, mongoose, limas, water buffalo to name a few. And Ranjan cooked us the most incredible sri lankan dinner by a camp fire all lit with lanterns. Loved this place

Fire lit evening meals which were delicious compliments to the chef.. felt magical next to the river...They provided a private jeep for the next day all day safari package which i highly recommend as we saw nearly all the animals present....from elephants to snakes and then came back to a very comfortable tent with en suite bathroom. Don’t use gps to find the location. Follow the staff’s directions.

The perfect location for nature loving gourmets. The staff arranged a safari for us and a night out to see orphaned elephants feed. When we returned to the campsite our path was lit by kerosene lanterns, magical! The food was the best we had in Sri Lanka and the presentation in the unique setting was unforgettable. I would recommend this for families, couples, or friend groups. This is an experience you won’t soon forget.
