Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Thank you to Roy, Sonny, Damis and all the staff at Roy's villa for making our first stop in Sri Lanka such a special one. My mum and I stayed for 3 nights. The place is beautiful - there's a lovely rooftop to sit out on and relax, there are yoga mats, there's a swing, a garden and a lovely communal area for breakfast and the family dinner. The rooms were spacious and the bed was comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed doing all of the activities with Roy and his staff - we did the safari, Pidurangala, lions red, dumbala cave. Everything was well organised and reasonable. The free Cookery class was a highlight. We learned a lot about Sri Lankan cuisine, and of course really enjoyed tasting all the delicious food! Thank you again!

United StatesOverall I found it so expensive. Since you’re isolated away from anything else, they can charge the prices they do (because you have no other choice). If you ate somewhere else or did an activity not provided by them, they became really defensive and question why you did that… haha. This place is not for the budget backpackers!! My wallet was crying by the end of my stay.
The property it self is so beautiful and comfortable. The dorm rooms are lovely and private. Family dinners are delicious! Staff is so friendly and make you feel at home.

United KingdomI loved being surrounded by nature so this wasn’t an issue for me but just be aware if you’re hoping for a walk into sigirya it is quite far out.
I am usually not a hostel kind of person but this one came highly recommended so thought I’d give it a go and I’m so glad I did! From arrival to departure the staff were amazing, giving me a free welcome drink and a free snack for my onward journey. The activities were so so good from sunset and sunrise walks to the elephant wildlife safari. The food was amazing and great portion sizes. The beds were comfortable. But what I loved the most was the upstairs lounge area, it had beautiful views and was the perfect spot to relax and read. I would absolutely stay here again.

United StatesBecause it is in a secluded area, there isn't much you can walk to from the hostel. Wifi didn't work well in the dorm.
Excellent full service hostel in a peaceful, rural area outside of Sigiriya town. The hostel is nicely designed and the staff are so helpful. They organize daily activities and can help with any transportation needs you have. The nightly dinner buffet is outstanding and well worth the money.

Japan1. The door to the room from the outside and the internal bathroom doors were very heavy and loud (even with earplugs). Roy’s kids are cute but they get up at 7am and make noise. Also building work started at 8am so I didn’t have the best sleep there. 2. I also found the food/drink to be overpriced. For example, the portion of fries for 4USD wasn’t big enough for the price. 3. The top bunks were really hot and stuffy as the aircon didn’t really reach up there. A personal fan would have helped. It cooled down a bit at night but I still woke up hot at 7am. If you can’t handle heat like me I recommend requesting a bottom bed.
Really nice hostel. 1. Very clean 2. Great staff 3. Activities were good value for money and well organised 4. Family dinner every night (7usd) was a great way to meet people. 5. Big and comfy beds with lots of personal space. I had fun there!

AustraliaThis was the nicest hostel I have ever stayed at! The staff were wonderful and organised some really fun activities during the day - including a sunrise hike, elephant safari and trip to the ancient city. The food was delicious and they organised a really fun cooking class. The rooms were clean and the social areas were really nice. I met some amazing people here and my time here was one of my highlights of my time in Sri Lanka!

NetherlandsHardly anything. We found the safari slightly expensive.
One of our favourite stays in Sri Lanka. Roy’s Villa is such a gem. Roy and his team truly understand hospitality and have build something great here. Also, it will be hard to find better food around Sigiriya than at Roy’s. Both room and common areas are wonderful and we really loved chilling at the upstairs lounge and fireplace at night.

Roy’s place feels like a home away from home. Roy and his staff are incredibly helpful, and the family dinner each night is great way to meet others, but there’s also plenty of space and beautiful hammock views if you like quiet time. Food is amazing too :). Thank you Roy and team!

GermanyJust small improvements I see for the wifi connection, missing trash bins and not really hot shower for the dorm. The location is rather remote so needs transport with tuktuk at all times to get around.

United KingdomMosquitos were a real problem (I got eaten alive!) so make sure you have a good repellent. The area is secluded so no proper shops or ATM within walking distance - come with everything you will need. (If not the hostel will gladly arrange a tuktuk for you!)
This is an amazing hostel. The staff were amazing and there were so many great activities organised every day for all the travellers. The elephant safari is a must! The food/family dinners were incredible! Very sociable but also pretty chilled out vibe. Beautiful wild peacocks roaming the area. The dorm room was comfortable and spacious.
