Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NetherlandsThe road to the cottage is very steep. It’s definitely doable by tuktuk, but if you drive yourself and you don’t feel comfortable, give Lucian a call and he will help you out!
We loved everything about this place. The host Lucian is amazing and so accomodating and a very good cook. The room is simple & clean, and has everything you need + a very nice shower. The view from the garden is beautiful and if it’s raining there’s a nice living room to chill. We did a hike to one of the peaks in the knuckle range, which Lucian helped us arrange (you need a guide to come with you + special socks so the leeches can’t get you). It was challenging, but beautiful, and we were the only ones there since not many places offer this hike. It took us around 7/8 hours to complete the hike, so we recommend to start early!

Singapore-
I like the views, garden and plantation surrounding the property. Friendly staff, who gave us a soursop from his harvest. Comfortable stay, but is difficult to get to, especially at night. We were informed in advance, but did not expect the steep roads leading up to the cottage.

Lucien is a great host and you are in a very quiet area but with a feeling of being at home. It's a private experience. We also did the knuckle forest hike and it's great but intense! Be up for 6 to 8 hours of rainforest trekking!!

GermanyWe had three wonderful and peaceful days at the pepper cottage. We were lucky and the only guests in that time, the host Lucian was very helpful to organize trips according to our individual wishes. He is an honest person with an interesting story and has good connections in the village, everyone knows him. We did a hiking tour through the village and to a beautiful waterfall. The next day we went to a local weaving mill, tea plantation and fishing with local fishermen. We were never forced to buy anything, he just wanted to show us. Food was excellent and fair price. Rooms are nice and Tidy and Lucian is a very good Cook. We liked it really much.

BelgiumLucian and the whole local community are very welcoming. This whole cottage arrangement is a perfect example of local sustainability. The free guided hikiings with our children, natural swimming pools, visiting organic coffee plantation... Sri Lanka at its purest and wildest. (You better do the last hilly kilometre by tuktuk).

GermanyWe were at the Pepper Cottage on our 2nd day during our Sri lanka visit, so we didnt really know what was ahead of us. Luckily we met Lucian who was the host of the place. Besides delicious and variable lokal food that lucian cooked for us, he, showed us the nearby waterfall and even Took us to a Gym in the morning. Furthermore we were the first people to sleep in a cottage beside the house, just like 20m up the Hill. Shower and Toilette worked wirhout Problems and the Moskito-net Kept most of insects away from us. All ower im very happy about our 3 day stay at the pepper cottage. It Was the perfect Start into our trip. Add: We followed Lucians advise to Continue travelling by bus which worked perfecty. Outside of Colombo things are war more chilled.

Francethe room is quite small and the place is beautiful, however there the garden and the terrace are very small and not so enjoyable to just chill or relax. Also this house is perfect for a couple of night, not so much for resting and relaxing as we had planned initially.
Lucian, the manager, is an amazing host and very good cook. we had a feast everyday of our stay, and we felt ver my welcomed and cared for.

We spent one night before our trek in the Knuckles and decided to book 3 more nights once we're back from the trek. The house is really nice. Lucian, the host is really friendly and a good cook. He will make everything for you to feel good. We had two rooms with one bathroom, which is perfect for our family. The beds are comfortable. You can enjoy the living room and feel like at home. The house is located above the main road, in a nice green garden. The concept is really great, a collaboration with the village and some project to bring clear water in East Sri Lankans population. The temperature is perfect and no need of a/c which is really nice. A lot of different activities Al can be done from there. Lucian can drive you to different places.

NetherlandsSuper nice location to stay if you don't want to sleep in the city centre of Kandy. The road towards the cottage is a bit of a challenge, but definitely worth it. It lies in the mountains and and therefore it has a beautiful view and very relaxed atmosphere. We did a very nice hike in closeby and visited a temple on recommendations of the host. It was the best hike we did in Sri Lanka since we were the only ones on the top of the mountain. In the evening Lucian made us a delicious diner, he is an extremely good cook! If you want a bit more of an authentic experience we can definitely recommend that you go to the Pepper Cottage. Thanks for everything!

United KingdomUnfortunately the taxi that was ordered was over priced and below expectations for the cost (12,000LKR to Sigiriya). Four of us had to travel in a small three seater for 3-4 hours which was uncomfortable and with no air-conditioning. Otherwise everything was good!
This is a little gem of a place in a village around Kandy. I felt instantly at ease when I arrived. The hammock area amongst the trees is particularly relaxing. Lucian was very attentive. The property is beautiful. The view is stunning. The food is excellent too. I highly recommend.
