Just be prepared to be very remote as the road to this resort is pot holed and takes around 3.5 hours from central Tulum and you'll need a good 4x4. However, the slow drive allows you to keep an eye out for wildlife and admire the views. We spotted coatis and lots of lizards during our drive.

Beautifully secluded resort with lots of wildlife. The restaurant was excellent and very reasonably priced. The staff were wonderful and really helpful.

The road to Punta Allen requires a full SUV ride height and wheelbase. A compact SUV or saloon car will do it but you’ll regret it. It was dry season when we visited so a rear wheel drive Grand Cherokee easily managed the road. In wet season or risk of puddles then nothing less than a 4x4 is required. When we visit again we’ll take a Wrangler. Please be respectful of the rented car, don’t spoil it for the rest of us. Break the journey with a lunch on the shore, it is a beautiful part of the world. By the end of the week we had enough of the sound of crashing waves on the beach. It’s supposed to be soothing but we found it became white noise similar to an air conditioning unit. The bungalow and setting were spectacular, however we were taken by surprise by the endless sound of waves.

The food was amazing and the staff responsive and friendly to our preferences. We weren’t expecting the strong internet. The buildings and rooms are very well maintained, the bed was super comfortable and the decor fresh. We stayed in the beach front bungalow which became our home from home. It’s spacious and nicely done. The garden setting is impeccable. It is paradise as one imagines it. Hector the restaurant manager makes the perfect margarita. 100% we’ll visit again.

Minor grumble - the bedrooms are slightly plain looking. Functional and nice enough, but no wow factor about the look. Though the natural stone in the shower room looks nice 🙂 And the main thing is the beach location! The lack of a menu! Never been to a hotel where there is zero menu! No menu at your table or even written on a board somewhere. Bit bizarre. The server just tells you what they have when they come to your table. So, ignore the menu you see on their website! If something does happen to match the menu from the website, the prices are now higher! It's quite expensive (but you'll appreciate why, when you've journeyed to this place - it's not easy to!). They don't bill you for your food and drink until checkout. So you're rather blind to how much you're wracking-up in food and drink. This is slightly unnerving, especially as you've never seen the prices of anything written down (and don't get told them when ordering at table, unless you ask). We went with the flow and it was fine (the items on our bill after 4 days of eating and drinking all our meals there was absolutely spot-on), but it certainly takes a leap of faith.

Lovely quiet location (very much not encroached-upon by any other accommodation or people - it's very much you and the handful of other guests enjoying this lovely spot). And no music blaring out, anything like that. The greenery around the hotel is pretty and shading as you walk from your room to the restaurant and beach (which is mere feet away). Big long curve of beach, with only Sol Caribe guests ever on it. The bit adjacent to Sol Caribe is raked early every morning, to clear it of any seaweed, etc, which is great (the rest of the stretch of beach has lines of seaweed, but also a lot of washed-up plastic waste and the like - a shame, but just the way the tide works there - not the local's fault, it just ends up there on the currents... and your stretch of beach makes up for it). Lovely turquoise sea, and no rocks or urchins or any other hazards along the waterline, so no need for water shoes to go for a dip. Water not WARM warm, but totally nice temp for a lightweight like me. It's nice to watch the wildlife. We saw a pair of dolhips in the distance on our first morning, about a dozen rays swimming past at walking pace in late afternoon, just off the shore. Pelicans glide past throughout the day, hugging the coastline. Birds of prey. And many other types of birds. Iguanas are quietly sunbathing around the grounds. No aggressive or pestering wildlife at all - just going about life, while you're reading your book. It's lovely! Plenty of sun-loungers for everyone (and they're comfy, and all well shaded). We had one of the upstairs rooms. The ceiling/roof of the upstairs rooms is literally about 10m up! I've never seen anything like it! Grass it is too. Did a good job of naturally keeping the room a nice temp (not hot). And there's a fan if you need it (we only needed it a little one night). Big room! Massive good mattress. Shower good too.

There were so many (harmless) mosquito-looking bugs hanging on the wall by the bed! And lots of mosquitos at night but you should expect nothing less in the jungle.

The staff are fantastic, and each time I’ve come it’s like a private island. The restaurant is convenient and there are toys if you have children. Punta Allen is a 20min or so ride south if you’d like to check out the small fishing village.

Paying for breakfast is not worth it. We had scrambled eggs for 150$ a portion. A small lizard pooped in our bed :)

All the superlatives are true: This is a once in a lifetime experience. We loved every single minute in Sol Caribe. It all starts with the 2 hour dirt road drive which I honestly enjoyed in a small SUV. You get to see many animals along the road, so just pretend you're on a safari and you'll be fine. We got the Suite with sea view and we were amazed with how spacious and stylish it was. We also booked a trip through the hotel staff and got to see dolphins, manatees, sea turtles and all kinds of fish near a coral reef. A trip to Punta Allen is also worth it if you have the time. All in all, zero regrets and great memories. Adressing concerns we had from reviews here: - The beach was cleaned every morning by the hotel staff - We did not speak spanish, but always managed to communicate - Some of the staff does not indeed respond to greetings: Don't get offended, this is how mexicans are. - Bring everything you'll need with you; You won't buy anything here or nearby.

Nothing. Some beach recliners were a little weathered, but it didn’t matter since they were comfortable and everything else was splendid.

Amazing location right on the beach. Went to sleep and woke up to the ocean waves. Very nice staff. Delicious food. Tour of the bio reserve organized by the hotel was affordable and amazing.

The 20 mile journey by car takes 3 hours, we didn’t go by boat because of the weather. The whole property, especially the beach furniture is looking rather tired and unloved. There were towels left on the beach and they were still there 2 days later. There is a sun deck and there was a glass left uncollected for several days. This place could be amazing. Nothing else to do and no transport to get to Punta Allen.

The location is wonderful. The rooms are large and airy with comfortable beds. The staff were friendly and the food good. Drinking water is provided in all rooms. From your room it is 20 paces to the little restaurant and then 20 paces to the beach. When the sun shines look out for the large lizard sunning himself by the restaurant.

We had a wonderful stay at Sol Caribe. From our first moments there, my husband commented that he could feel his body relaxing. It's a place to deeply unwind, slow down, and breathe. We spent hours gazing at the ocean and swimming in the waves. The biosphere tour they arranged was amazing: incredible birds, dolphins, turtles, a surprise manatee, and some excellent snorkeling, all with a very small group (just four of us plus the guide). The staff were wonderful (it helped that we had some basic Spanish, but you could figure it out without that), the restaurant was very good, and we had a great time getting to know some of the other guests. It's definitely not easy to get there, but that's the main thing that protects this place from the crowds you see elsewhere on the coast and makes it a gem. We took a van/boat out there from Tulum, and it was fun to see the lagoon that way, although it was a bumpy ride given the wind and waves. We stayed in the beachfront bungalow, which was wonderful - very spacious and lovely and with amazing views from the patio. Overall, our stay was the highlight of a wonderful trip to the Yucatan Peninsula.

Wonderful place right at the beach in the middle of Sian Ka’an Reserve. The beach bungalow is just amazing, with direct access to the beach and a lot of space. Also the staff was really kind and helpful. The place is very quiet and perfect to escape the busy and loud places like Cancun or Tulum.

I wish the road to the place was better. It takes about 1.5 hrs from where you exit the highway at tulum, but this also keeps out the tulum nonsense.

A wonderful spot on the beaten path that's not well traveled. Paradise on a budget.

It was a little difficult to know when the food was available. The restaurant was not open all day it was only open for breakfast, lunch and dinner so you have to find the manager to find out the hours. There was no exact info about that on the reservation page. Also there is no other places around if you do not have a car. you have to eat what the restaurant has. The food is good so you wont be disappointed there was just not a lot of options so be prepared for that. Also the Wi-Fi works great in the restaurant and some spots on the beach, but it doesn’t work in the room. So definitely prepare to take a break from your phone.

the location is amazing and the rooms are very big. there was also transport from Tulum, which was a must for me so I was happy that they were able to provide that. Take a break from your phone its an amazing place for that. there were almost no one there.

Our sole disappointment was not with Sol Caribe. The accommodation was excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful. Our disappointment was with the state of the road. It was absolutely horrid. It was full of endless, deep potholes. It did not appear that the road had been graded for months. As the location was in a government designated biosphere reserve, one would have expected that some maintenance would occur. There appeared to have been none. There were garbage bins along the road associated with private properties. Many were open, broken and overflowing with garbage. There appears to be no garbage pick up along this road and the owners have totally neglected any responsibility for clean up. One would expect that the government authorities responsible for the reserve would have taken some initiative to enforce clean up. This was wishful thinking and reflects poorly on Mexican federal and state government departments. We stopped a number of times along this road to explore the beaches. All beaches were heavily littered with plastic trash. One would expect trash to wash up on beaches but one hope that in a biosphere reserve that there would have been some evidence to address this issue. For these reasons, we would not recommend a trip to this area.
