You could hear everything from the hallways and other rooms as the walls are very thin.

It is very central and the host was very nice and helpful!

It's an old building so it is rather noisy. Though free earplugs are provided.

Absolutely great stay in the middle of town. Highly recommended. The staff go out of their way to help you and inform you about everything on the Isle. Rooms are nice and clean. Common area is great with free coffee and tea.

Aayu Chulia was the perfect stay in Georgetown. The location was great, right in the middle of the main area of the city. The rooms were very clean and so were the bathrooms. Nice shared social space on the ground floor. It also had filtered water and the daily bread from the local bakery was a lovely touch. We also got a lot of helpful recommendations from the hotel, which made the experience extra special. Would 100% recommend.

The Wi-Fi on the highest floor was good most of the time, but slow on occasion during the height of Chinese New Year, which was probably understandable. Not having a lift/elevator could be challenging for some people, but it’s a beautiful old building. For most days, it was fine going up the stairs, but it was rough when I was tired. I had a room without a window, which was fine for me, but might not be for everyone.

Shane, the property manager, was very responsive and helpful. They have a great common area downstairs to hang out with fresh baked bread being brought to guests every day. The space itself is well maintained, and it’s a great location with all major attractions within walking distance for most people. It’s a great value considering the location.

Beds in our room were a bit hard. That being said we still slept well.

Excellent location, near the big malls, the harbour, the clan jetty’s, street markets, little India, night markets and a 20 minute drive from Penang Hill and The Beach. The owners are so helpful and friendly. They leave fresh bread and cookies in each morning, along with tea, coffee, milo and cold drinking water. All amenities are there - hairdryer, shampoo, nice Lounge area with sofas, books games etc.

I had a lovely stay at Aayu chulia. It's located close to very nice restaurants and shops. The owner was very helpful and assisted me with everything I needed. Rooms have A/C which I highly recommend to get a good nights sleep. If I could recommend one thing that the pillows could be slightly thicker but otherwise a pleasant stay.

The mattresses were too hard for us and like in a lot of places the shower is right next to the shower, so that everything gets wet.

Even though they don’t have a reception, the stuff answered very quickly and gave a lot of information about what is going on in the city. Never had such a good WhatsApp communication.

Location was great, I managed to walk everywhere I wanted to go. I got the bunk bed room but stayed alone in it, and I think the size was just right for me and my huge suitcase. I saw other guests fairly frequently, but there was always space in the living room and bathrooms etc. The host Shane was on-site quite often, and very helpful whenever I asked for information, to borrow stuff, or just wanted to chat a bit. Just know what you're getting into before you book! It's a shared space with others and thin walls, there will be some noise and strangers about. I slept peacefully regardless, and it's honestly a nice option for budget travelling and exploring Georgetown.

For the price, you cannot much space given. Room was small, so heads up.

The proximity to every food hotspot in georgetown is walkable. They also give free freshly baked bread, which was nice.

Slightly different from the picture. Cleaning details were average, lots of dust on the bed frame. It was inconvenient to use a laptop. The bunk beds were very noisy. The air conditioner smelled a bit after being turned on all night. In addition, the ventilation fan was broken and the ventilation was not good.

Location was nice. The boss was nice. The boss thoughtfully wrote handwritten cards for each room.

Very clean and quiet hostel. The owner Shane is very nice and helpful. Communication before and even after check out was excellent. The hostel is very well located with everything in walking distance. An excellent Bakery and Cafe for breakfast only steps away and also a good choice of restaurants and street food for dinner. Wifi worked very good also in the room. We recommend this hostel.

I got a bit claustrophobic, as the room was quite small, plus we got the last one on the corridor, and there was no window. I chose the one without window myself, though, so it was not a surprise, only I thought I would handle it better. Some more shelves and hangers in the room would be good.

Great location, very friendly and helpful staff, great value for money. A nice hand-written message was waiting for us in the room. There is bread, cookies, tea and coffee in the common area. Good place for a few nights, mostly for backpacers.

The staff are incredible, Shane was truly amazing. They helped us check in early and then also we got the checkout time wrong and they allowed us a late checkout. Extremely kind of them! Also, the property is clean and everything works perfectly. Great little common space as well. Location is also perfect!

No lift - understandable for a century old building. Though, I welcomed it as good cardio exercise, as the silver lining.

Aayu Chulia is a gem of a hostel! it’s a home away from home! Every room is private, spacious & very clean, in a 100-yr old beautiful & historical building. Original wooden floors & stairs!!! As expected, walls are thin, but, having your own very clean & spacious room is a special treat & for a steal of a price!!! The minimal dining facility facility in a very spacious & clean lounge area is quite welcomed for making toast hot/cold beverage, & refrigerator to stash leftovers, & keep beverages/fruits cold. Best part, there’s always fresh loaf of bread everyday for a small snack! Lots of combo shower/toilet in each floor, but, in the ground floor, each room is equipped with its own combo shower/toilet. The entire building is always kept immaculate! The location is prime, smack dab in the thick of things! Restaurants, cafes, convenience stores, night market, bars are all with a minute - 5-min walk!!! Tourist sights are within a few minutes walk. Penang Hill is a 20-min Grab taxi, so is the beach. But the best part, Shane, the husband/wife duo owners, is an amazing hands on staff!!! He’s 100% very responsive & accommodating on anything you may have query on - recommendations on food, what to do, where to go, etc. or need help with - carrying your luggage up/down the stairs, because he genuinely cares! His staff are wonderful as well - so helpful, especially with my luggages!!! I am so thankful & grateful for Shane & his staff for a beautiful, very clean, very spacious private rooms hostel & top notch service in a very prime location!!! I will definitely come back & highly recommend it!!!

It wasn’t a problem until the last night but we could hear everything upstairs, but we knew it was an older building before we came so we didn’t mind too much. It all adds to the charm of the place. The owner also left us free earplugs and toothbrush’s for our stay :)

The beds were supper comfy! The air-con worked perfectly and the showers were lovely and clean. We also liked the way it was a keyless entry so we didn’t have to worry about loosing a key. The owner was really nice and gave us recommendations, he was very quick to respond. My sister loved the fresh bread and cookies in the morning. There was also a water dispenser that gave you cold water so we didn’t have to buy water! Was an amazing stay and we will be back.
