How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews

Could use a little refurbishment, but everything is very clean so didn't matter much.
Great location in sandakan. Room is very clean, with all the basics of what you need for a short stay.

Some street noise as room faces street
Central hotel in Sandakan, comfortable bed with AC, clean especially surprising being carpeted floor. Close to eateries, walkable and AC room very welcoming. Host is warm, receptive and exceptionally helpful with arranging trip, transport to Sepilok. A great value as decent Sepilok accommodation can be scarce last minute

Karaoke till the late night, split our opinions, I usually sleep well so didn't hear, but keep in mind
Location is perfect. Self-service with no staff at the reception (but always available online) could be ok for someone (like me), but for someone could be inconvenient.

The four flights of stairs were a killer with luggage, especially as the aircon in communal areas stopped at level 2.
Aircon was good, cooled the room down nicely. Room and facilities were pretty basic, but good value for money. Customer service via WhatsApp was very helpful and responsive. We changed our travel plans and extended our stay here. Things worked out well.

Very basic accommodation but clean in central location. Good aircon and shower. Very accommodating establishment, allowed early check in to suit our arrival and not hesitation when requested a 1.5 hour late check out to co-ordinate with our driver pick up for River Boat tour. 😀

Maybe the room is a bit old but with everything you could need
Always in contact with the reception via WhatsApp for whatever we needed. Self check-in. Room not too big and a bit old but everything worked properly and it was very clean. Good location, just walking distance from main streets. Kettle and purified water for everyone.

Fourth floor with no lift is not ideal if you have mobility issues or a lot of luggage!
Spacious room with two double beds. Comfortable. Good location. Host is very responsive on WhatsApp including providing local recommendations. Very good value for money. Walking distance from attractions in Sandakan.

Never actually saw any staff so can't comment on them. The room did smell very musty and the aircon is slow to kick in. The bed was okay but could tell it was an old mattress
Good size room and not too far from shops and restaurants. Was able to check in early which was a nice touch. Hot and cold water available. Hot shower

Everything is old, but it is mostly functioned.
Although the hotel is located on a busy road, it's surprisingly quiet in the room. Clean. Shops and restaurants are within walking distance.

Great hostel! In convenient location, and we stopped here before our flight home. Had a restful stay and host was very helpful giving instructions for check in. Water cooler very helpful.

The bathroom could have been a bit cleaner.
The staff were great, even letting us check in very early. Location is very close to the bus depot and night market. Town and the sea are a short walk. There is a good shop underneath. Free hot and cold water.

My fault but hadn't realised there was no lift, quite a long way up to the top for oldies! Bedside lights would have been great......

Not very soundproof. We understood every word of our neighbors.
Good place for a few days. Most of the parts are in walking distance. A water dispenser was in the corridor.
