How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews

The only downside is a club next door that’s blasting music till 11pm / midnight and it was difficult to fall asleep

Great value, drinkable water (hot and cold) available. Communication with hosts was fast and easy through WhatsApp. Check in and out super quick. Wifi worked well.

The bed was really hard and the room itself pretty old. We had a room in the the top floor without an elevator. The corridors in the upper floors don't habe AC and under the roof it got really warm so we had to set our AC really strong to keep an acceptable temperature.
We didn't meet anyone personal during checkin but it worked super well with phonecalls and whatsapp. We were able to checkin way earlier than expected, so that was great. We were also able to rent a almost new scooter for a really good price on the same day. Good location.

Day time is okey, as the 4th floor can have a small glance of the sea, but not sunshine nor sunset, that is what we expect to catch. Cleanliness and tidiness is okey. All flooring is with carpet and luckily still managable with air conditioning on.
It a bit noisy at night as there's a karaoke down the ground floor and it operates until mignight, even passed thru 12 o'clock am. I wonder why a Muslim country would allow such operation.The water pressure is a bit slow on the 4th floor, so must be patient to take shower or wash clothes No lift to the 4th floor. Location of the air conditioning no good, so I have to reverse the position to sleep to avoid the wind of the air-conditioning.

Great location and the staff and just fantastic! They really go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable and help provide advice/suppet if going on tours. Highly recommend, especially for solo travellers.

Not the hotel’s fault, but this part of Sandakan isn’t pleasant - very smelly and dirty by the waterfront area.
The room is large, clean and comfortable. We didn’t see the owners but check in was easy.

Super.easy check in and owner is extremely responsive to questions via WhatsApp. Location is great, though the front door is a little tricky to find the first time you go.

Urine smell in the toilet even after had been flushed. Needs deep cleaning.
Location is great. Room was clean. Drinking water..hot and cold was available anytime Bed comfortable. Some books available to swap. The owner stored our bags for 3 days while we were away on a trip. We booked another night for when we returned.

There is a karaoke or club next door so it can get quite loud... I think by midnight it stops but if you are sensitive to noise this is something to consider.
Great welcome from the staff: they messaged me in advance to ensure that I could find the location. Facilities were standard with bed, shower, air conditioning etc and the best part was the hospitality. On arrival they add you on WhatsApp (or another form, as you wish) for easy communication. I had questions about laundry, remote working locations and Sepilok - all answered very quickly with great recommendations. When I come back to this region I will rebook for here. Highly recommend.

The noise of some terrible music at night, coming from the nearby restaurant or bar. The bed in my single room was too narrow and very hard. The twin room had better beds.
There's water to refill your bottle, cold an hot, and you can have tea anytime. Location is fine in the city centre, near mini bus station. They provide a hairdryer in each room and an adaptor for European plugs, which was very convenient. Communication is by WhatsApp, they answer quickly and are very informative.

Quite complicated to get in as you get a super long Passcode. If you don’t have it written down somewhere or it runs out, you won’t get in.
Nice people running it, rooms were comfortable and come with everything you need. Location close to sea and mall.

Very simple , no luxury, just for few nights
Location, near the airport. It’s perfect for two nights, the city it’s not very pretty but you can go to sepilok or RDC (rainforest).

AeCotel was fantastic. Great location, comfortable room (with seaview) and super, super helpful staff and management. Staff are positive, proactive and go out of their way to make things easy. AeCotel is not a super luxury hotel but price/value is fantastic in providing the basics of a clean comfortable place to stay in Sandakan.

Next to a pub with very loud music until 11 o clock
They gave us an extra room for free, we rented cheap scooters. Very nice rooms and very clean. Very friendly staff

Door handle in my room I had to press many times to get it to lock
Location was good as near the centre of town, local transport and the sea, also there is a convenience store next door as well, facilities and room both good, liked the hot and cold water dispenser in the reception.
