Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

ItalyWater coming out from the shower of our private bathroom smelled like rotten egg, and our private room was close to the generator and the air conditioning external unit of all the private rooms so it was super noisy during the night. The hostel is not that clean, there was a rat running on the ceiling during dinner and not so healthy-shaped cats jumping on the table while eating. Have to say Mabul itself is not that clean, it’s full of garbage everywhere, there is no beach as they’ve built resorts on every inch of the coasts but two, super dirty with local children begging for money. Meal is included and is pretty decent but we’ve had the same food for four days in a row: white rice, chicken curry, fish (fried if at lunch was steamed or viceversa) vegetables and watermelon, a little more variety would have been appreciated.
There is a super nice area you can look the sunset from, meals are included and are pretty decent. You can also buy lobster / fish from the locals and ask the chef to cook them for you. They sell beer for10RM at the bar and chat with the other travelers or the super friendly staff. During the night you can swim jumping off the porch, water is warm and it happened more than once in 4 days turtles came in front of it.

Italythe dormitory could be quite warm and some shelves are missing. I think an extra fan and a few nails on the wall to hang clothes would be enough to improve the room
Great location for such a cheap price! I had a lot of fun and relax also! All the guys from the diving are so nice. The staff was cleaning the toilets many times a day

AustraliaVery poorly organised- you spend the day waiting around to leave on dives (as in, expect dives to be up to 5 hours behind schedule with no communication). booking staff were quite rude at times, snorkelling at the island was abysmal- do not bother unless you’re a diver (and even then, would think again). Food was very basic, occasionally bordering on inedible.
cheapest option, staff at Mabul were lovely, beautiful deck

Italyreally rude owner, broken bed in a 6 person dormitory with only one small fan which is practically useless. hot water ran out already after lunch. all at a price that is far too high for the service offered. the location is wonderful, you can't find it on booking but if you want something cheap right next door you will find beds at 35 MYR per night
very beautiful island, the locals are super hospitable, walk out of the hostel to find authenticity and smiles

SingaporeGabs was terrible as divemaster. He swam off without a care of his guests, didn't point out anything for us to see (we found all the interesting things ourselves in the dives). We had to do everything ourselves, and was impolitely ordered to do so - carry this, bring this back, tie this up, no not like that, wash this, take thia back. .. He also showed preferential treatment to other divers, doing everything for them. Dorm room was warm and not well ventilated. Shared toilets were dirty and showers grim.
Accommodation and kitchen staff were all very chill and friendly. Within days of booking I was contacted asking if I would like to dive at Sipadan, and they arranged for me, for the lowest price on the island.

Malaysiashare washroom too spicy food which make my stomach weak. the transportation is very bad, the day go to mabul the boat broke down because of low water level, starts waiting from 7 am but reached on 11:30. when we reached the ferry location, the car brake down( cannot start starter and no power for car), I don’t know why this may happen, so we wait for one hour and I call a grab car to pick me up by myself. Even I am a person who can understand and don’t want to blame to anyone, but the transportation got so many issues which is a very bad things and the company should do more to manage everything well and abode this kind things again.

MalaysiaThe staff were so unorganised it really ruined our trip. We booked diving and snorkeling in advance, but the staff had no idea of what we were talking about and seemed surprised we wanted to dive, despite that being the only thing to do in Mabul. We had to wait around for hours for one of them to take us diving, in the end we didn't bother going on any snorkeling trips as they were just so unorganised. It was even a struggle to get them to take us back to the mainland. There is also no WiFi despite them telling you there is on their booking page.
We stayed in a private room which was clean and comfortable. The food was also very tasty, basic but very nice.

Australia1. The food was bad. The same food or small variation of the same food was served everyday for lunch and dinner and it was not good. We just couldn’t eat it. We travel a lot and eat most things, but the price of staying here included the food. Considering they have access to fresh fish and seafood for no cost it was clear the food was not a priority for them. 2. The diving equipment was very old and in poor quality. Definitely needs repair.
The location was great although Mabul Island is tiny and full of resorts that are built out into the water, including Mabul backpackers. The owner has put in a clam garden and reef in front of the property which is good for snorkelling and the water is clear and clean around the property. The diving team were great.

LithuaniaI have been in many hostels before but this one was the worst I have been at so far. Bathrooms so gross I couldn’t handle it. There is a hole in the shower floor and all sewage goes straight to the sea. That is everywhere on the island by the way, there is no basic infrastructure (water and sewage systems). Hostel room: dirty sheets. I am sure it was not changed as it looked messy as someone slept there before. I felt so uncomfortable sleeping there, afraid to get bed bugs or even worse. I think this place is on the edge of that. People from this place were loud, playing music late, you can hear everything from the room. The place itself located in the village that looks more like slum and there is trash everywhere. I must apologize for such review, but you can not simply serve this to people. And for 25€ a night!! That is absolutely unacceptable! Way too overpriced for what it is and again - dirty, dirty, oh so dirty. Dear owners, please respect your guest and take care of this place, change sheets at least for god’s sakes.
It is the only place to stay in Mabul island unfortunately (if diving resorts full). When there is no other option then you do what you have to do…
