While this is a hostel with shared rooms, we were lucky to be able to book a double room with private bathroom on ground level. The bed was surprisingly comfortable with firm pillows which really helped with the much needed sleep after our long train ride. The eco-friendly me was delighted to discover the hot&cold water dispenser right outside our door so we had unlimited drinking water during our stay. Another pleasant surprise was the free (self service) breakfast included in the room rate which makes The Brownstone a great option for anyone visiting Ipoh on a budget.

Heavy traffic and obnoxiously loud motorbikes going by and there's really loud music from the clubs. But there's nothing the hostel can do about that.

The owner was really nice. I was arriving late at night but I got on the phone with the owner (I'm assuming) and he told me what to do for the self-check in. You also get a text message which gives you the instructions.

At night is quite loud as hostel is just by the fast and wide road, which many cars use. Anyway, hostel provides free earplugs. I did one night without them (was fine, but it took me a bit longer to fall asleep), the second night I used them and it was great.

Helpful staff, free breakfast (unlimited cereal, milk, coffee, toasts with jam and peanut butter), nice and big common areas, two lovely cats on board. Rooms are quite big comparing to other hostels, very clean, seem new, include lockers and efficient AC. Also hostel provides cheap laundry (2 ringid for washing powder only), good WiFi and recommendation for spending time in Ipoh (e.g. good restaurants nearby). One night we were only 2 people in 8-people dorm and overall the place has a lot of space so it won’t be overcrowded even with full reservations. One of the best hostels I have ever been to.

The place is beautiful, friendly owner/staff. Every corner makes a gorgeous OOTD area. Price is cheaper if you book directly but sold out fast. Shower and toilets are a little small but plenty. Comfortable place and well thought out. If you book bunk beds/capsule bed, you have small area in between the bunk for prayer.

Relaxed atmosphere, warm welcome, nice café, cool interior especially in the common areas like the kitchen, had a wonderful one-day-trip to the Cameron Highlands that was organized by the hostel

Noisy road but you are warned Very warm in common areas and bathrooms even with fans…easy to get bitten Very annoying that people are allowed to do photoshoots in the common areas. Flash of a camera going off doesn’t help relax The cats didn’t bother me in general but seeing them on the tables in the kitchen area where people eat isn’t the best look

Very modern, nice hostel! The breakfast was nice and you had so much privacy in the dorms. The common areas are lovely and very inviting for chilling. I loved it there!

The dorm I stayed in was very comfortable and spacious, with a big locker as well. Everyone in the staff was really nice and helpful! There is also a washing machine which was practical.

A bit far from old town.

The whole hostel was very stylish, very nice common rooms. Also a nice bedroom, with good beds (includes curtain, lamp) and spacious locker. Rooms were clean. A nice shower, with hot water! They also had a small cafe. Wifi was good in common room.

This is one of the loveliest hostels I've stayed in. There is ample communal space with a really innovative swing chairs and table in the kitchen area. The staff are kind and welcoming. The room is spacious and the beds some of the comfiest I've stayed in. There were nice little touches like some earplugs and a towel which made the stay even cosier. The vibe was fabulous and there was a balance of people chilling out and working. I worked a couple of days there and the wifi worked well for both zoom calls and browser work. Location wise you're slightly off the beaten track BUT Ipoh is small and walkable. Within 15 minutes you can get to what you want to see. Would recommend!
