How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

A wall light kept flickering in the bathroom and we could hear a lot of noise above the bathroom- possibly coming from Guests above us? Or wind related?
The comfortable bed and nice room facilities.

We stayed in a beautifully spacious 2 bedroom suite that accommodates us and the kids which is so rare to find. The beds were so comfy and the room was immaculately clean. The Bolton has an exceptionally high level of customer service and will assist you with anything, which is why we always choose to stay at the Bolton.

would have been difficult to find parking so had to use valet parking, which was fairly expensive
location was perfect - lots to do on foot around there, and close to Cook Strait ferries comfort was exceptional lovely pool and hot tub

The bins being emptied at the hotel across the road at 3am.
We had a suite which provided us with a washer dryer machine, very useful after a few weeks of travelling. Lovely comfortable bed.

Hotel dining for dinner was incredibly expensive for what we had.

Bar and restaurant area small and lacked atmosphere.
Great sized room, loved that it had a bath and shower. Kitchen area was very useful. Good location for site seeing.

I had my old dog with me. She had stayed with my son all weekend but after we dropped him at the airport on Sunday we needed to keep her with us. It was not possible to take her to our room which is understandable. But maybe there is an option you could consider in the future. Offer a dog minding service. Lots of hotels in Europe allow dogs. I am not sure that is the solution for NZ but being able to bring my dog and take her for walks would appeal if an external party looked after her when I need to be in the hotel
Just about the best place in Wellington to stay. Location, quality of rooms and facilities.

The only thing I am not very happy about is I booked a hill view room but I stayed in a city view room ( a messy city view with some construction sites).

On arrival our first room had a puddle on the floor at the refrigerator, which might have been on a defrost cycle. We were promptly moved. Our in room service dining requests and fulfilment went amiss but we appreciate the hotel comp'd us for the problems we had.
A fine hotel w/ kitchen, somewhat up the hill from the centre of Wellington, and down the hill from the botanic gardens. A good base for visiting Auckland on foot. Room was well appointed. We had a good stay.

Our room (807) was tired and needed refub- cupboard doors drooping, rubbish shower head etc

Some of the floor coverings and the blinds are starting to get a bit worn but perhaps they're due for replacement.
I up graded to a studio with a view and it was very peaceful overlooking the cemetery. The suite was spacious and well equipped for a long stay. Although I didn't use the pool or the sauna and spa I would if I was staying long term. I had organised a reunion and we were a small group so the boutique nature of the hotel was perfect. The meetings staff were excellent. The food is wonderful and all the staff are capable and professional.
