The receptionist was very abrupt. There was no deviation from the check in time of 3pm, which is very late in the first place. But this is still understandable, if it is policy. What was disappointing, was that three parties were waitibg to be checked in and the duty manager/receptionist had to be summoned via telephone by a guest and turned up at 3 15pm. Furthermore, no apologies for the wait or a formal greeting- a guest even greeted the receptionist by name and said: "Hello Trish (read it from her name tag), nice to meet you. we were expecting a welcome." To which Trish responded "Is that so?" We had to wait and watch for her to power up and grimace at the pc. Then it turned out the check in was all manual and on paper anyway. Trish took out each sheet of paper one by one from the drawer. We were asked to give our email, but she could not give me a reason why. We declined to give the email, and then all conversation stopped. It was like tumbleweed passed by. I asked, please may we have the room key now? Upon which we were told, she wanted to "do everybody in one go." By that time we decided to pick up our luggage from the car. On our return, Trish was giving out basic information sheets (we did not get one) and then proceeded to give each party their key one by one after all. It was very frustrating. We did not feel welcomed at all upon check in.

Most staff and daciluties were ok

    Everything was perfect.

An amazing experience all round. The castle and its' sad history, a story well told over our guests-only dinner at the long dining table. The views are majestic, and the castle interior is maintained to a very high level of cleanliness. in tribute to the value placed on this icon of Dunedin by the current owners.

I didn't like the seating arrangements at the $95 dinner as my husband and I sat in between 2 groups of 4. One group elderly and the other Chinese. No conversation on either side.

I loved the castle and the lodge.

Carpet was old, stained and the colour made it look really dirty. There was a little bit of mould in the shower. The vanity had no storage a barely any room to put anything

Historic castle. Beautiful location, garden’s gorgeous, however room was a little tired, carpet definitely needs replacing, view was magnificent, some niceties missing such as robes. Breakfast in the stables was lovely and the dinner fantastic.

It's not that its a dislike.. but maybe any earlier check in.. but there was plenty to do till then.. so it's not really a big deal...

Everything .. the staff are lovely, helpful and very friendly.. professional.. kind and easy to interact with...and it started with the friendly person at the guardhouse.. right up to The story telling at dinner was amazing.. well spun.. Jessica is a credit to your wonderful staff. Rooms are lovely, warm and snuggly. Our room had the view of the Harbour entry. BED was very comfortable. We loved our stay.. Trust the chief 4 course meal was tasty, if you are not use to course meals, which means it's not like your local steak and salad chips kinda of dinner.. I recommend having a full lunch during the day in the ballroom Cafe, we had scones with an Easter blended tea (so delicious) we tried the pork and kumura pie (perfect)..at dinner we tried their NZ wine, we had a rosè and it was so nice we brought 2 bottles.. it was a great night.. the music room located in the castle.. . its stunning to sit in there and drink wine eat dinner.. we met a lovely couple who was seated next to us.. from Poland and Indian coming from Australia.. topped our night with wonderful conversation. But everyone who attended the dinner was in great spirts.. we all connected, and thats a credit to introducing ourselves in our group gathering pre-drinks before dinner.. The next morning we had breakfast in the "stable" that was a great surprise...it sets the ambience... breakfast was delicious and such a variety and they can accommodate all kinds of dietary requirements. We visited the castle week after Easter weekend....so end of autumn, beginning of winter.. and gardens are still lovely.. but visiting in spring would be amazing to see it all in full bloom.. but there is also something lovely about multiple colored trees amongst the ever greens and the native birds singing a treat in a fresh Otago chilling air.. we absolutely recommend this place.. 👌 my husband loved it all.. ❤️ side note the Ashley n Co handwash, body wash, shampoo and condition smell divine..

Everything went well. Stunning gardens, breathtaking view from our room, which was extremely comfortable and well provisioned. The chefs choice dinner was well worth it although we were lucky and had some great dinner partners. Breakfast in the Stable block was more than sufficient with plenty of choice and served freshly co0ked by pleasant staff. Jess, who led our private tour after dinner was knowledgeable and entertaining. Amazing considering she went to school the next day. Our own exploration of the castle the next morning led us to linger more have been given a detailed insight by Jess.

The lighting in our room could have been a little brighter and parking in the stable yard can be a little difficult, but that's all!

Excellent and unique location within New Zealand's only castle. The added bonus of included entry to the castle and gardens was great. We took the opportunity to dine in the castle on our first night, which was another unique experience and an opportunity to meet other guests and enjoy a mini tour giving us some background to the castle and the family which built it and restored it. A lovely location, well worth a visit.
