Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

PortugalAlthough it feels very secluded, it can't get quite noisy during the day due to the proximity to the road. I also did not like the fact that there was no bathroom in the pool area. Extremely expensive for what you get in my opinion, although top quality. It is great, but too expensive for a vacation in the north of Portugal.
The breakfast was great and the overall quality of everything is above average.

United KingdomTwo minor criticisms. The surface on the entrance ramp (from the car park) is ripped in places. This creates an unfavourable first impression. Also, the garden and grounds could be better maintained in places.
This hotel is great. The decor is quirky and fun. The rooms are gorgeous and the meals are excellent. Service is exemplary.

United KingdomThe hotel has a gothic romantic charm, which although is intriguing at first is a little tired and rundown. It has built up a solid reputation with walkers and cyclists who stay to explore the local nature trails. These groups arrive at night, set off early in the morning and eat as a group in the evening. As a result the hotel is like a ghost town during the day, and even though I stayed at the beginning of the season that seemed to be the general vibe the hotel had developed. I spent a few days by the pool not seeing anyone else for hours, including the staff. The food had a homemade quality about it but given how quiet the hotel was, I often had stale food or food that had passed its best and I had to complain.
Set in beautiful grounds with a unique rustic authentic feel. When I asked the staff for help with anything they were very obliging but sadly not overly pro active. Located a 20 minute walk from the eco via, which takes you on an hour walk into Ponte de Lima. The spa is a nice touch but definitely not ‘luxury’ and the flagship goats milk bath and massage although lovely was overpriced. The hotel also allowed me use of their bikes free of charge.

United KingdomLocation on a busy road, which you could hear constantly when dining outside or from the pool. Continuous loud music from neighbouring property. Concrete construction was very gloomy and oppressive.
Nothing in particular.

United KingdomThe experience overall was not good enough to be listed in the Small Luxury Hotels directory. Others SLH's we have used have been exceptional. The major problem. The evening catering was very poor, and most certainly did not meet expectations, and blighted our stay. We wonder if Carmo's has a major kitchen/staffing problem, post-pandemic? The food is expensive, had to be chosen by 18.00 each day, and there is no atmosphere in the dining room. On day 1, Thursday, we were contacted to be told the "for logistical reasons" only sandwiches were available in the evening. There was a choice of about 5-6 and when served the quality was very poor (we told staff at time). On evening 2 (Friday) the "logistical problems" continued , with a limited menu of dishes offered. We chose from the light meals menu and had a very expensive, but nice, small dish. On evening 3 (Saturday), unsurprisingly, we ate out. As the hotel, and others, say the decor is eclectic, which is fun. However, some now looks old and shabby. It needs a refresh. As others have said, the hotel is next to a moderately busy country road. The front terrace can be noisy, but elsewhere is OK, but do not expect rural peace. No noise issue in our room (4).
The room was very clean, well equipped, nicely furnished and comfortable. The pool area was a nice place to sit an relax in the late summer sunshine. Lots of chairs, loungers and shaded areas too. Pool and gardens were well maintained. The modern rather brutalist-style building is architecturally interesting and the decor eclectic (but is now looking tired in places). Some people will like it, others not. Plenty of free parking is available.

PortugalThe lady at the reception put us off. She welcomed us in a very robotic and business-like manner without any warmth. Also, the tour around was brief and quick, ending with the usual "if you have any questions, please let us know " It almost felt if it was an honour to be allowed to stay at this small luxury hotel...! The hotel is located next to a relatively busy road and the noise of the cars is constantly present at the background, at the terrace of the room and on the terrace of the restaurant. Overall, the place begins to look rather stuffy and dusty, and some parts are in need of maintenance. If you pay Euro 400 /night you expect and should get more.
The location of the hotel and the view of the tent rooms was very nice. The room itself was comfortable and the spa treatments that we had booked were good. We only could enjoy a dinner on the first night since the cook was sick the second night, but it was good. Nothing spectacular but a solid meal, in particular considering the very reasonable price ( Euro 39/pp). The ladies that are helping at the restaurant are very nice and efficient and make a real effort to make you feel at home. This in stark contrast to the lady at the reception the day we arrived....
