The location was stunning! Wine tasting was a highlight the lady was lovely and very informative. Evening dinner with wine pairing fantastic and breakfast plentiful and beautifully presented.

This place is amazing! It is one of the most peaceful places we have been and the view from our patio was so serene. Everything about the hotel is first class. The meals with wine pairings were outstanding and Beatrix presented a wonderful and informing wine tasting. A stay like this in the USA would have been over $1000 a night so this was a great value.

This place is stunning and I couldn't recommend it more if you want to relax and enjoy peace and quiet. Location is perfect right near the river, where a short walk away you can relax on a pier watching the views. It is a small place which makes it very cozy, the food and wine is yummy. The staff is great and the rooms are beautiful. We didn't have time to use the bikes but we did enjoy the spa. If you want to visit the Duoro Valley, this is the place to stay.

There’s virtually nothing that is not to like about this place.

Normally I only write reviews if the place was excellent. That puts me in a bit of a situation with Casa do Rio because it’s so far above excellent that any words I could possibly use to describe it will likely not do it justice. Anyway, I’ll try :) Nestled into a ravine of sorts just above the Douro river you’re treated with great views all day long as the light shifts, and every room does have an unobstructed river view. On that, this hotel has only 8 rooms, so count yourself lucky if you’re able to get a room here. Two of the rooms are suites and are located in front of the main building, the other six are on either side of the restaurant / communal area. It’s very cozy and gives you an ‘at home’ feel. The rooms themselves leave nothing to be desired, their appointment envelopes you and makes you feel very comfortable indeed. Being part of Quinta do Vallado means their wine selection is of course excellent and I won’t write more about it here, however, the dinner that comes with it every night is absolutely fantastic. Their chef is a rockstar! Not to mention the swift and friendly service. Having to deal with a maximum of 16 guests at dinner makes for a relaxed dining atmosphere. And did I mention how amazing the food is? Overall the staff here is beyond excellent; we were greeted by José Pereira upon arrival and I have to say that, with my almost 20 years of professional experience in higher end hospitality, I’ve never ever seen a more attentive and involved host. He truly makes a difference in an already above and beyond place. José, if you read this: THANK YOU to you and your excellent staff! So, how to sum this up… Casa do Rio is simply spectacular, truly one of, if not the best hotel in Portugal. If you have the opportunity to try it, do not hesitate to do so. You will not regret it.

One of the staff members was somewhat rough when we had a misunderstanding about the wine tasting, where supposedly you need to make a reservation although it is not clearly stated in their page. Later she was nicer but still her initial attitude made us feel very uncomfortable.

Nothing - our stay was perfect, just too short!

Our second time staying at Casa do Rio and it didn’t disappoint - this is a very special place! Everything about our stay was perfect and we once again enjoyed such a warm welcome from the team. Special thanks to Ricardo for making us feel so welcome and for taking time to chat with us and answer our many questions about the Quinta and the area! And a special mention to the new chef - he is a real talent and we so enjoyed his food, it was really exceptional, as of course were the wines accompanying it! We will be back!
