Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NetherlandsWe rented the apartment for 3 nights and loved the view. After one night they builded scaffolds all around the house. Unfortunately, no one communicated that with us. So it is a very unfortunate surprise to wake up, walk out of the bedroom into the living room, and walk straight into the face of a construction worker who was building the scaffold on the balcony. Also, our view was totally blocked for the other two nights. I know the owner can't really do anything about it, and renovations need to be done. But a warning would be nice since the view is half of the reason for renting the apartment.
We loved the Alfama neighborhood. The apartment watches out over a cute street where the trams pass, and you can see the ocean in the distance. The space in the apartment itself is a little outdated but overall fine. The hosts were really nice.

It’s very well located and within a walk of what we required. Clean apartment and had all we needed.

NetherlandsEverything in the apartment is either old or about to break. everything you need is there and the place was clean, so it wasn’t all bad, but a little more care from the owner would be appropriate. It doesn’t have to be brand new and updated, but the lights and fans should be all functioning and electricity should not be hanging loose out of the wall.
The location is very nice, lively and in the middle of beautiful Alfama. The view is lovely and we enjoyed watching the old trams and people going by from the balcony window.

United KingdomHaving just a couple of sachets of coffee (or some granules for the machine) or literally a couple of tea bags s expected in this day an age. it could have been a little cleaner, a map/guide would have been useful and free for the host to provide. the unexpected €25 late check in fee after 8pm was a surprise and should have been communicated up front. there are 2 hosts - I was messaging the contact number on booking.com and receiving replies. It was apparently my fault I wasn’t messaging the friend to communicate a second time check in time? The hosts need to communicate between each other and have a single number.
location in heart of old town all that was needed as a base to explore

AustraliaVery dated, and needs a refresh. Electical socket hanging out of wall. Bad smell from bathroom - had to keep door to bathroom and kitchen closed. Tram running past at 5:15 am was noisy. Stairs are exceptionally steep and difficult to carry heavy luggage. Pictures on booking do not reflect the current state of the apartment. Not good vakue for money paid.
Location was great, clean and had everything we needed. Close to good restaurants and bars, tram right outside.

NetherlandsPlace needs some serious deep cleaning. Couch was so gross I had to cover with bed sheet to sit on it. Also, had to but a bath matt to step in the bath. Tiles very dirty and gross, entrance mirror looks as if no-one has ever cleaned it. It's an old apartment but if you keep it clean and maintain it, it can be still in decent condition.
Location is very good.

New ZealandThe bathroom is in shocking condition. There was raw sewage coming out of the bath plug hole when we flushed the toilet and when we ran the sink. We couldn’t shower in it because it was so disgusting so had to clean our bodies in the sink! The property smells of sewage/drains throughout. The sofa also smells of cigarette smoke and the upstairs bedroom is so small it isn’t possible to stand up in it. I have been really disappointed by this apartment and would not recommend that others stay here, if they are expecting a comfortable stay.
It is in a good location.

BulgariaIt’s quite obsolete. There are steep stairs up to the 2nd floor. The 2nd bedroom has a low ceiling, therefore we were forced to use the extended sofa. It wasn’t easy to find the exact location. We were charged 25 EUR extra for late check-in, regardless we had arrived prior to 10 pm. The area was quite noisy due to local holidays.
The apartment is located in the Historical part of the capital (Alfama). It is close to the Tram 28 stop, as well as it has connections with other public transport means. The St. Jorge Castle is near by. Since it is on a hill the view towards the river is marvelous.

United KingdomQuite noisey at midnight. The apartment is in a old building and not suitable for disable people (people has issues to walk).
Location is 100% perfect. At the heart of the old town Alfama and located at the back of the famous viewing platform. Restaurants, bars and shops nearby. Tram lines are just one step away. Highly recommended.

ItalyThe stairs leading to the apartment are *extremely* steep, with little to no space for feet to climb them. Opening the door on the street from the inside is nearly impossible unless you stand on the stairs to do it because there's no room. For people with disabilities, more robust physique, or with heavy luggage it can be quite hard to reach the apartment or get out of it. The bathroom is found in the kitchen, and although the two are separated by a door, the bathroom sits in front of a window with no curtains. Furthermore, it is quite old and dirty, with even live wires above the door. The kitchen is probably the worst thing in the entire apartment, as it is extremely dirty, and populated by ants (they are *everywhere*, and dead ants can be found in the fridge as well). The kitchen is super old and needs to be renovated as soon as possible. Cleaning the various tools and plates before new guests come in would also be very appreciated. We thought the ants were mainly located in the kitchen, and we just decided to not use it because of how dirty and unwelcoming it was, so we ate pre-cooked food in the living room. We found our fresh produce and even sealed food completely covered in ants and had to throw everything away -- or what was left of it... We contacted the host, explaining how we had run into this issue and that we were displeased with our stay so far, even providing pictures of what happened. The host decided to read our messages and ghost us instead of providing a solution. Based on how he presented the apartment during the check-in phase, we are sure he was aware of the issue already and tried to hide it. This is unacceptable. Bonus flaw: the balcony is completely covered in pigeon poop. Good luck venturing there. I hope you enjoy this review, João :)
The apartment itself wouldn't even be that bad if it wasn't for some major flaws and the fact that the hosts are blatantly ignoring them. The position is great for exploring Lisbon, albeit a bit noisy due to the tram rails being very near and the fact that many touristy restaurants and bars are in the area. The view is certainly the strong suit of the apartment, as the host said -- which also means that everything else can be disappointing in comparison.
