Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomTakes a while for the hot water to come through but given location it's understandable. The fan provided was too squeaky for the night but the temperature required it. Proximity to the Cascata dos Anjos waterfall does mean the road to the hotel can be crowded with cars.
The sea view was absolutely incredible, as was the infinity pool, the location is perfect for watching the sun set. The comprehensive breakfast each morning was great. Proximity to the Cascata dos Anjos waterfall and Ponta do Sol is great. The hotel manager was very accommodating and keen to help, and the rooms are cleaned super quickly it's usually already made by the time we finish breakfast. Hotel is quiet so it feels very peaceful and spacious. Hot tub by pool is lovely for sun set.

IrelandIt was the biggest highlight of our stay in Madeira. The hotel is so serene, so quiet, so amazingly relaxing. The breakfast is delicious, the staff is simply great. And the view from the room is unbeatable! It's worth the money.

PortugalSpa wasn’t heated so couldn’t use the jacuzzi. Lack of AC or ceiling fan in the room would make it uncomfortably warm in the hotter months.

We loved every minute! Petra and her staff are amazing people. Every day, we were looking forward to a healthy and delicious breakfast. We especially loved the ginger shots. We loved the room, the pool, ... the only regret we have is not staying one day more, like we had originally planned. We will be back for sure.

United StatesOur time at Escarpa was absolutely incredible! The staff was wonderful, the property was beautiful, the breakfast was amazing and the restaurant, 90 Degrees, was also incredible - the staff, the food and the service! Our stay was so quiet and peaceful. We would absolutely stay here again!

United StatesThere was no A/C and since all the rooms face south/west, it can get hot in the afternoons. Since we were there in October, opening the sliders to our balcony cooled the room down quickly, but I think it would have been more of an issue in the warmer months.
The breakfast each morning was lovely and served in a great setting overlooking the ocean (everything overlooks the ocean!). It was wonderful to sit on our balcony relaxing after a day of hiking.

NorwayWe were a bit disappointed that our pool felt extremely cold, but we did chose to travel in November.. When the days are warmer for longer, the pool would have been warmer. Ms.Petra assured me that the temperature should be 23°C, but that they would also try to have heating installed on the pools from this winter on. Other that the pool, we had some issues with the toilet not stopping to flush, but we managed to fix this ourselves. We would also have liked some info on the flow of hot water in the taps and shower as we thought we didn't have hot water for 2 days, haha.. We just didn't let it run for long enough..
The staff in both the hotel and the 90° restaurant was amazing! As was the food in both places, I've never experienced such a variety at breakfast before. Our villa was beautiful, and cleaning was spotless every day! All of the staff did a fantastic job of making us feel very welcome, the lovely Ms.Petra has something very good going on here! The place is sitting in the hillside between Ponta do Sol and Madalena do Mar, making it a quiet gem away from the busy city life. It was exactly what we needed to charge our batteries, thank you again!

Lovely stay. Stayed here for my honeymoon and we both loved it. The rooms and the property were just as shown in the images on line and the staff treated us with care and intent. The property is also located along a lovely walking trail so it was excellent.

AustriaOur initial room was extremely hot with no AC installed. Due to that we were barely able to sleep at night because of the heat (the temperature in the room didnt fall below 32°C at night, despite opening all windows), but Petra reacted immediately and offered us another room, where it was way more comfortable. Other than that, we had no issues.
The rooms are really nice, amazing view at the ocean, very clean and modern. There have been a few issues initially but the staff was trying to present a solution to them immediately. All in all a great overall experience, we can definitely recommend it.

GermanyClimbing the stairs may be an issue for some people. The villas are spread on the cliff and climbing steep hills and stairs is a part of life on Madeira
Very new, small boutique hotel with family atmosphere. The views are fantastic! Everything is new , clean and stylish, service is very personal. The villa with the pool is very comfortable and thought through, with the nice sitting area, balcony, bathroom storage, and bedroom, very ergonomic, and of course private terrace with the pool! We didn’t want to go out as the view from the villa is not worse than any of the fantastic viewpoints ( miradouros) throughout Madeira. I would highly recommend staying here for a quiet holiday. Very quiet and you can see stars at night. Even in the common pool area it was never too crowded, 4 people at the time maximum. The restaurant is also very nice, small, casual but elegant again with nice view, with good food and service.

We stayed at Escarpa - Madeira hideaway in July, 2023 and what a find it was! Everything was of an excellent standard and nothing was too much trouble. The highlight of our stay had to be breakfast which was absolutely amazing and must have taken much time and care to prepare. Our well proportioned room with lovely views over the sea was delightful and so comfortable. Do make sure you book a meal at 90 degrees - you won’t be disappointed! We would certainly recommend a stay here
