Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

PortugalFurnished in a traditional style. Beautiful gardens. The staff were exceptional, from room service to all the Waiters and Waitresses who could not do enough to make all of the dining experiences a pleasure. The hotel is about 2km from the centre, easy walk down but a lot of uphill on the return. The hotel provides a frequent shuttle service. We met several people who were returning guests. For one lady it was her ninth visit. I cannot recommend this hotel more highly.

Belgiumwhat's not to like :-)
This is the kind of hotel where you feel like royalty. The staff goes above and beyond to serve you. All is perfectly clean and well looked after. For example, we had a very late arrival due to airtraffic delay. We called to inform we would be later than indicated. When we arrived, the restaurant was closed, but the staff had foreseen a cold dinner in our room (which was vast by the way). That was so welcome after a long flight day and living on airport food. They did not charge it, it was fully complimentary! We very much appreciated that service! The pool is great! We were there in March, did not expect to find the pool open yet, but it was. The weather was extremely nice, sunny and warm, so many chose to swim and enjoy the sunshine and still there were enough beds by the pool. It's not like in those all-in resorts where people put their towel on the bed in the morning to reserve a spot. The breakfast area is also supernice. You can eat inside when chilly, or on the porch in the open air in the morning sun, or in the garden itself. The food itself offered anything you can think of, lots of healthy choices too.

United KingdomWas not impressed at being joined in the hot tub with a couple with a baby less than 12 months old. There should perhaps be a minimum age of 5 in the hot tub.
A gentile hotel with refined service and very high standards. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. They cater for an older demographic so it's not the place for kids. Brilliant

United KingdomThe service around the pool was a tad slow. We had two quite long waits for lunch time snacks and coffee took a while to reach us. It wasn’t a huge issue for us and I have no doubt that this will be addressed by their very efficient team.
We stayed in a superior room which was gorgeous and a good size with two comfortable armchairs alongside a very large bed. The decor was in keeping with the property and the wardrobes had generous hanging space. The view from the balcony of the garden and hillside was stunning. The gardens took our breath away, they were so beautiful. In the afternoons we chose to sit under a large arbour of Bougainvillea beside the pool which was pretty near perfect. The pool itself was a good size and a second small pool for very tiny tots. The hotel ran a regular shuttle service, several times a day, to and from Funchal which was helpful. My wife thought that the breakfast was very good but I would have preferred a better selection of pastries. We sat on the balcony overlooking the gardens which was a fabulous start to the day. The service was always courteous and prompt. Dinner was generally excellent - perfectly cooked and seasoned with immaculate service. What makes this hotel so special is the people who work there. All were courteous, kind and couldn’t do enough to ensure our stay was as perfect as possible. I also need to mention the wonderful Colombos, the resident Giant Galapagos tortoise who stole both our hearts. We loved it so much that we will definitely go back.

The hotel is a beautiful old building set in a magnificent garden. The hotel has every convenience; beautiful swimming pool, fitness centre, library and much more. The rooms are spacious, clean and attractive. The staff are excellent, friendly, helpful and available. The hotel transport into Funchal runs all day and is so convenient. All meals are delicious, plentiful and varied. It is brilliant.

We enjoyed our stay in the hotel. Our room did not have any view, however we did enjoy access to the rooftop private terrace. Great views, grounds and pool. Historic hotel, perhaps slightly dated. Restaurant was average.

United KingdomOur only slight issue was the very high up location, away from the town centre, up a very steep hill, but a free courtesy bus was regularly available. My only recommendation to the hotel to make it more convenient would be to run the courtesy bus a bit later, beyond 5:30pm. For us 7:30pm would have been more convenient and then we would have got a taxi back.
The hotel is set in beautiful tropical gardens with views over the sea. The staff at Reception and in the Bar and Restaurant were always helpful, friendly and courteous. The buffet extensive breakfast, which we could eat in either in the beautiful garden or in the restaurant were accompanied by a choice of freshly cooked hot food. The Evening Meals were delicious. Our Junior suite was exquisite, looking over the garden with views beyond and the room was always cleaned daily at a time when it was most convenient to us with a turndown service every evening. The WIFI service throughout the hotel and in the grounds of the hotel worked perfectly.

This is an exceptionally perfect hotel. The hotel's botanic garden with many exotic plants is like a small paradise. The service and the friendliness of the staff is excellent in all areas. Breakfast is always a good start to the day - choose something from the menu or help yourself to the buffet. The restaurant comes highly recommended - varied selection and always perfectly done - and perfectly served. A real 5* hotel. Just to mention: it has a well-equipped sauna - and you can reserve for the time you want (unlike many other places where you have to wait in line at the door). As said: eveything done in a very professional way.
