Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomBe prepared for a short but sharp hill climb from Funchal central to get back to your room!
A great ‘individual’ hotel - attractive for not being a clone of others in large chains. Very friendly, helpful staff. Breakfast, bar and restaurant food was good.

United KingdomThe roof of the indoor pool was looking a bit tired (and in one place broken) and I felt did not reflect the same high standards that I saw throughout the rest of the hotel.
The room was large, well equipped and comfortable, a complementary bottle of water was in the room on arrival. The gardens were beautiful, and while quite small provided a lovely setting for the outdoor part of the bar. Dinner in the restaurant was delicious, I loved looking out over an old tree and watching the birds as the sun set while eating. Breakfast was perfect, a great selection of continental and cooked items, all fresh including the selection of juices. Attentive and helpful staff all around the hotel, special thanks to Rosie who managed to arrange a horse riding tour plus transport at what was incredibly short notice and had excellent recommendations for things to do and see around Funchal. Indoor pool had a fantastic view. I did not have time to visit the spa, games room or gym.

United KingdomThe pools are both a little dated, especially the indoor one (which is also very small). It didn’t seem like 5 star pool. I would also say it is a little overpriced for the pool facilities.
Lovely location about 10 minutes out of town. beautiful grounds and WONDERFUL staff. Games room was a nice touch.

United KingdomI didn't like the decoration in the rooms. White walls, beige laminate flooring and beige drapes. No warmth, colour, atmosphere nor quality furniture. We were in a suite and the rooms were stark cold and really only worthy of a 2 or 3 star rating. The tv sat on top of the mini bar fridge, wires hanging down everywhere, just nowhere near 5 star. We really liked the hotel and staff but the rooms were a real let down and just couldn't justify the cost of our stay. I know it has been hard for hospitality these past two covid years but when this hotel starts to make money again it needs to really upgrade their rooms into the modern 5 star world.
The staff were all very helpful, professional and friendly. The dining area was warm, inviting and boutique hotel like with excellent food. The common areas hallways etc were well decorated with furnishings and carpeting of quality.

United KingdomProviding tea & coffee making facilities in the room would be a much appreciated addition
A hotel that is full of class and the best traditions of Maderia. The hotel exudes a calm and stylish atmosphere with tasteful and very comfortable furnishings throughout. Beautiful fresh flower displays, antique pieces and lovely botanical themed art. The gardens are lush and well kept and the staff are attentive, professional and welcoming.

NetherlandsWe had an apartment, with ocean view. It was extremely clean everywhere. The restaurant offered an exceptional buffet with additional options (eggs, bacon, sausages, pancakes and much more...), local food, fresh fruits and juices, even champagne :). The Vasco da Gama bar served also lunch and dinner anytime during the day. Nice playroom underground, our children enjoyed the games every day. The garden was so colorful, looking like a botanical garden.

United KingdomIndoor pool not well ventilated - bit of a chlorine fug so we did not linger. You have some road noise on the balconies but this is central Funchal so no surprise. Could have some daily specials on the evening menu as we enjoyed the food and ate in the restaurant for 4 nights but felt a little short of choice to eat there for the full stay.
Staff were amazing throughout stay - very friendly and helpful - special shout out to Tony in the lovely bar area who is a consummate professional. Flexible Happy Hour was a nice surprise - bar area had lots of comfortable seating - rather like a lovely home. Room size good, blackout curtains and rooms very quiet - no noise at all from adjacent rooms or from outside. Excellent breakfast. Very central location for Funchal. Had a very good massage in the spa.

United KingdomI find it sad when you go to a spa hotel and have to pay extra for the spa. I always expect to pay for treatments, but not to use the jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. It would have been good to have products in the spa to shower off the oil after spa treatments. The roof on the indoor pool needs replacing since it leaks in quite badly when it rains. Just an age issue due refurbishment. Everywhere else in the hotel was in great condition. A few things were missing from the hotel that were present on the website, like darts and garden hammock. But the staff helpfully brought up cushioned sun loungers to the garden instead.
The buffet breakfast every day was delicious! The staff cleaning the room did a brilliant job. The garden was beautiful. The games room and indoor pool were great since we had so much rain. The massage was excellent from the spa. The covid precautions were great. Everyone had their own tongs at breakfast and the cleanliness was brilliant. Fresh flowers were a lovely touch around the hotel. The afternoon tea in the bar restaurant was tasty and good value. We really had an enjoyable stay.

They don't make hotels like this one anymore. :) The room, parking, etc are great but what makes this hotel stand out is the service and kindness of the staff. Really helpful, kind, nothing is to much. And of course, there's Rosie at the courtesy desk. :)
