Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomWould be nice if the bathroom floor was mopped during the week.
Basic but comfortable accommodation in Funchal. We stayed there for the whole week. We were travelling everyday, so were basically just sleeping there. Bfast is good - ham, cheese, bread rolls, tea or coffee, yoghurts, some fresh veg and fruit and sometimes hard boiled eggs. The host is a very nice chap, who speaks several languages and is happy to answer all the questions you might have. He is usually serving the bfasts. Parking in front of the house is for free. Towels provided, but bring your own shampoo and shower gel.

BelgiumMy stay at the Residencial Melba was very pleasant. José and his wife are very welcoming. I also had the opportunity to practice Portuguese every morning at breakfast with José! The breakfast is complete and varied. Rooms are spacious and quiet, cleaned daily. Excellent location to explore the city. Thank you very much!

United KingdomThe slightly dated decor and furnishings didn't bother us. There is a moderate climb from the main road, but this is Madeira.
Extremely friendly and helpful owner and staff. Spotlessly clean. Great value for money.

PolandVery nice owner from Venezuela. Good value for money. No problem to check in very early. When I couldn't eat breakfast one day (had to be early on the ferry to Porto Santo) the owner suggested that I could eat the day I arrived (early). Nice balcony and a quiet district! Definitely to recommend!

PolandIf rooms were vacuumed during the stay, it would be great - floor was a little bit to dirty.
Very good value for money. I was positively surprised by the hotel room - it had everything I needed. The host was very friendly and helpful - he helped us to rent a car when it was almost impossible (portugese holiday time), advised and prepared us a breakfast for the morning of arrival. Breakfasts were really fine - fresh and crispy bread every morning and tasty coffee. It’s a great place to stay for travellers.

AustriaThe owner and the family is very friendly, we want to come back soon. Everything here is great, and if you need some informations, you always find someone there to ask. The room has everthing you need! It's very close to funchal, but the best pub (hole in one) is next to the hotel, and also cheap restaurants. In front of the hotel you can enjoy your cofee on the tropical terrace with a beautiful sight on native plants - strelizia - palms - bananas. We are very happy with our holiday in Residencial Melba and hope we see soon again. I would recommend the Hotel! :) Best wishes and thanks for everything!

SlovakiaIt must be said objectively that in the accommodation some of the rooms have been renovated with new furniture and modernised bathrooms. And then the original ones with old furniture and original bathroom. However, these are not in the photos on the booking. They are pointed out by several travelers (e.g. Michalw0). However, it is interesting that mostly (according to reviews) travellers from Eastern and Central Europe get these rooms. We didn't expect luxury but cleanliness and functionality is the basis of the amenities. Upon arrival to the room, we were disappointed as the bed linen was dirty and had stains in various places and the prepared towels and bath towels were in terrible condition. The towel looked like you had rubbed mud off your hiking boots in it. I spoke to the owner about these shortcomings. The next day the bed linen was replaced and the towels as well. However, it left a very bad impression and if we hadn't pre-paid for the entire stay, we would have left after the first night. The safe in the room does not work, the pool was not in use, there is a kettle in the room but you have no cup or glass (only in the bathroom was one cup). Balcony door does not close well, little storage in the room.
I chose the accommodation based on reviews. Good location if your goal is to explore the island and you have a car. Good wifi and tasty breakfast, very good pastries. Willingness of the owner to address some shortcomings.

LithuaniaIn some rooms, the balcony opens onto a very noisy street, cars drive all day in front of the windows 6 meters away. There is no ventilation in the room, so you need to open the balcony. I couldn't sleep because of the noise, even earplugs didn't help. There is a teapot in the room, but no cup.
Breakfast is simple, but sufficient. I stayed for 2 nights, I always found a place to park my car. The room is simple, but enough for a sleep. Close to food shops, bars, waterfront.

This is a nice family hotel in a cultured garden city environment 25 minutes from the center of Funchal. The room is completely renovated, simple but practical. the bathroom is clean and aesthetic. The bed is very comfortable. The breakfast excellent. The hosts are very kind and helpful. Portuguese people work very hard to make tourists feel good, this also applies to the hosts.
