Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustriaA family owned hotel apartment, the owner is a sweet man that takes care of you from the moment you arrive, till the last moment you leave the property. They bring fresh bread to your door every morning, they recommend you the best local restaurants. My tip: let the owner tell you where to go and where to eat, then you will enjoy Madeira from the local point of view and not instagram and bloggers! P.s: the sea view balcony is a blessing and although you are in Funchal , you’re still away from punks and drunk tourists!

United KingdomEverything was great!
Joel and Bruno are wonderful hosts who really care about their guests. They helped us to rent a car and gave us good advice for places we wanted to visit. Fresh warm bread arrived at 7am every morning and the beds were very comfy. Location is peaceful away from the busyness of Funchal and easy to get to centre on public buses. Lots of local restaurants/cafes nearby plus a small supermarket that has everything you need.

Czech RepublicAmazing accommodation and service. Quiet location but very easy to get to the city. The rooms have beautiful view of the city and the sea, there is a supermarket, public transport and good restaurants nearby. Every day the cleaning was superb. We received some food and drinks as a welcome gift and every day there were fresh bread rolls given to each room. Joel and Bruno were so warm and welcoming, gave us great tips where to go and what to see and were always ready to help. I never experienced such a personal and hospitable approach. When we return to Madeira, we are definitely booking Vila Marta again.

IrelandNothing - I would stay again.
I loved staying here. The owners are so, so lovely and welcoming. They really took the time to talk and answer questions. They gave advise on anything I asked about and I found it brilliant. It was like a home away from home. The room I stayed in was massive - like a mini suite (2 single beds, kitchen area, sitting area, bathroom and balcony). The bed was very comfortable. The shower pressure was great. The balcony looked over the rooftops down towards the sea. Location wise: I liked it. It is on the outskirts of the city and it took about 20-30 mins walking downhill towards the sea/promendade/multitude of restuarants. The walk back up the hill was a struggle on day 1 but it was absolutely fine after this (take it easy). Howevre, there are bus stops close by if you prefer not to walk. During my time in Madeira, I rented a car and Vila Marta had parking spaces for anyone staying which was brilliant. Also, they delivered fresh bread to the room each day which was such a lovely thoughtful touch.

United KingdomAt times we could hear the traffic ( not sure there are regulations about noise pollution , some VERY loud motorbikes in particular ) and the balcony wall is to high to be able to enjoy the view whist eating breakfast .
Spacious apartment , comfortable furniture , pleasant decor . Spotlessly clean and room cleaned /bed made every day . Manager and his son very kind and helpful . There were foods for the breakfast on the first day and fresh bread rolls hung on the door handle early every morning . A pleasant relaxing stay . We were given a bottle of Madeira wine the evening before we left . Also, the owner found a solution to switch off the fridge as it was too noisy at night . There was one night when some dogs started barking nearby in the valley which then encouraged other dogs to do the same. This disturbed us for several hours . Not the hotels fault but I just feel people should now that it may happen .

BelgiumNothing, really nothing.
I usually don't write reviews, but I will make an exception, as Vila Marta was probably the best place I stayed during my vacations. Mr. Joel Alves and his son Bruno are fantastic hosts, very friendly and helpful, the room and the entire hotel are spotlessly clean and the view from the balcony is beautiful. Upon arrival you are greeted with a glass of Madeira wine, the room is very large and equipped with everything you need, inside you will find coffee, tea and a fruit basket, and the hosts bring you fresh bread every morning. There is housekeeping service every day. If you rent a car as I did, there are plenty of free and safe parking places on the street. Upon departure, Mr. Joel arranged a taxi for me to the airport and although I left Vila Marta very early (at 4 o'clock in the morning), he personally waited for me at the reception to wish me a good trip. He also offered me a box of traditional sweets from Madeira and a bottle of wine (to my sadness I had to refuse the wine, as I didn't have checked luggage). There would be more to say, but to conclude, my stay in Madeira was perfect thanks to the fantastic staff at Vila Marta. Thank you!!

PolandHaving stayed there for 9 days we had a great holiday. The hosts are very helpful and nice. There was a lot of space in our room and it was super clean and well equipped. The beds were comfortable and the view from balcony was nice for breakfast. You can always park your car in front of the building and within just couple of minutes get to the supermarket or main highway. There is also a bus stop with direct connection to Funchal center. Overall a great experience - highly recommended!

IrelandThe room was a bit hot, but they provided us with a fan, which made all the difference. We were also bitten all over, maybe mosquitos, not sure. Everything else was perfect!
Vila Marta is an outstanding place to stay in Funchal! They organized a taxi for us from the airport, and we were greeted by the owner on arrival at the hotel. He offered us a taste of Madeira wine as we checked in. There was a nice fruit basket and items for a first breakfast in the room as well. The place was very clean, and comfortable and had a good shower, and a beautiful view of the ocean from the balcony. Daily maid service and fresh bread hanging on the doorknob every morning! The owner (Papa) and his son were very friendly and helpful, giving tips on restaurants, places to buy groceries, and information about tours. They bent over backwards to ensure my wife and I had a great stay. It's advisable to have a car if you stay here, since it is away from central Funchal, but there is a bus no 45, which is about a 10 minute walk up a slight incline by the roundabout, which takes you into the city Centre. We would gladly stay there again!

United KingdomFor some, if you are a night-life lover, the distance from central Funchal might be a drawback. There is a good bus service very near which goes to the centre in 15 minutes. There is a short, steep climb to get to the bus stop .
This property is furnished to a higher standard than I would expect for the price. Bruno and Joel are superb hosts, offering a very friendly and personal service. I cannot thank them enough for the practical help and moral support they offered , as I had lost my phone en route. There were all kinds of touches and little extras that made for an excellent experience.
