Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

CanadaVila Marta is a bit far from downtown Funchal to walk and there are very few restaurants within walking distance to Vila Marta. Parking is a bit of a nightmare wherever you go in Madeira especially downtown. Parking garages and hotel underground parking are your friends.
Joel and Bruno were exceptional hosts. They went overboard in providing helpful directions and suggestions for site seeing and how best to navigate Funchal and the rest of the island. They were like family or even better than family!

United KingdomThis is the second time we've stayed at Vila Marta, and once again we very much enjoyed our stay. Our studio apartment was comfortable, clean and well equipped, and with a lovely balcony sea view. There's free parking right outside the door, good wifi and it's just a short drive or bus trip to nearby supermarkets, beaches and the many attractions of central Funchal. The local area was also pleasantly peaceful and quiet. Above all, our helpful, friendly and generous hosts Joel and Bruno were always available, gave very helpful advice and ensured we had everything we needed. Vila Marta is excellent and very good value accommodation to which we very much hope to return.

Canada- Very helpful hosts, who oriented me to the city and its bus system, arranged a taxi at a short notice and even gave me a lift to the aerobus shuttle stop. Thank you Joel and Bruno! - Location a short bus ride away from Funchal city centre (buses #4, 8 and 45 stop nearby). Praia Formosa and Madeira Shopping Forum are within 30 min walk (involves some uphill walk on the way back) - Gorgeous sea view from the room and the terrace (the upside of being on a hill!) - Twin Room as shown on picture, has a kitchentte with stovetop and cooking utensils

United KingdomThe hotel has exceeded our expectations by a lot. The hosts were incredibly kind in helping us organise buses, laundry and even drove us with their car to our car rental place. We were always looked after with a smile and had such a wonderful experience. The hospitability surpasses any I have ever experienced and I definitely recommend those who are looking for a calm traditional Madeira stay to book here. The apartment was very spacious and for the price they are charging it is incomparable to some of the other places we saw. There are buses going from the place to Funchal that take around 20minutes, but to explore the whole Island you will want to hire a car.

United StatesI can't say enough about good things about my stay here. Bruno, who I had been communicating with, picked me up from bus stop, then showed me exactly where buses to town came and went, then talked w/ me for 20 minutes about his lovely hotel and of course the beautiful island Madeira. Rooms are actually more like suites, with great sea view balconies. Fresh bread on door knob every morning, bottle of water and fruit in room. Bruno's father, Joao, is just as sweet. Such kind generous folks who just want you to feel at home. And, get this, there is even daily maid service! Was overwhelmed by their kindness and generosity. Thank you so much for the lovely stay Joao and Bruno. Do choose this calm place if avoiding chaos of dt area. 15 minute bus ride into center.

Vila Marta was a great choice for a stay in Funchal. It is located on a slope in a quiet part of town with a beautiful view of the sea. A very well-equipped, spacious apartment with a large balcony, comfortable beds and a smaller but sufficiently equipped kitchen was carefully cleaned daily. There are several smaller shops and restaurants within walking distance, Mc. Donalds and pebble beach (approx. 20 minutes). Access to the villa requires good physical condition or the use of a public transport bus, taxi or rental company. Several public transport bus stops are within a 10-minute walk, the journey to the center takes 15-20 minutes by bus. We bought a prepaid Giro public transport card and used it a lot. We arrived from the airport at night by airbus and although it is not very far (airbus stop approx. 700 m), the owner was waiting for us and took us by car. As a welcome, he offered us a glass of great Madeira wine. There was a bowl of fruit in the room, butter and jams in the fridge and ingredients for making tea and coffee including a bottle of water on the kitchen counter. The owner Joel and his son Bruno were very helpful throughout the stay and always willing to give advice or help. Every morning they brought fresh pastries to the door handle. At the end of our stay, the owner gave us small gifts. Vila Marta not only has an excellent location, but it is also very good accommodation at a good price, which I would definitely recommend to others.

BelgiumAbsolutely nothing.
We received a great welcome by Joel and Bruno at our arrival at Vila Marta which is easy to access from the airport. My girlfriend and I felt like we were expected if you add to that a glass of their favorite Madeira wine during the check-in. On top of that, our room was well equipped and cleaned each day, the place is quiet. Moreover, Joel and Bruno gave us very great advices regarding the restaurants they love/or other people told them they are worth the try, how to go to the main points of interest near Funchal and especially where to park. All of that for a very fair price! If you stay a few days in Funchal, this is definitively a great place to stay!!

United StatesThere was nothing negative about my stay. It exceeded my expectations, thanks to Joel and Bruno!
Vila Marta is an outstanding place to stay in Funchal! Was greeted by Bruno, son of the owner, who offered me a taste of Madeira wine, dry or sweet, as I was checking in. There was a nice fruit basket and items for a first breakfast in the room when I arrived...nice touch! The room was clean, comfortable, and quiet. Nice kitchen, good shower, beautiful view of the ocean from the balcony. Daily maid service and fresh bread hanging on the doorknob every morning! But the best thing of all was the hospitality of the owner, Joel, and his son, Bruno. They were so friendly and helpful, giving tips on restaurants, places to buy groceries, and things to see and do. They bend over backwards to ensure you have a great stay. And I had a great stay! It's advisable to have a car if you stay here, since it is away from central Funchal and up a steep hill from the Lido area. But the location is perfect for being away from the masses, to enjoy a quiet and comfortable stay. Madeira is an amazing island, and Vila Marta is the perfect place to stay when you visit!

LithuaniaThe best impressions - a villa in a region where you can still feel the old Funchal, among the banana gardens, although constructions are already "climbing" here as well. Regardless of the age, everything inside is refurbished, from the bathroom to the comfortable beds. Very clean. After a few hundred meters entering one of the "levadas" you can walk through the gardens to the nearest villages. After descending the hill you find yourself in one of the few beaches, next to the fish restaurants where the hosts recommended dinner (I also recommend it). Then by bus ride up the hill for 1.95 eur (buses stop very close to the villa). The hosts are so sincere and attentive that I felt like on holiday with good relatives. Thank you for all, Joel and Bruno!

Everything! Joel & Bruno were amazing hosts. A very warm welcome by Joel who was on hand for advice and whatever we needed. I felt truly welcome at Vila Marta. Bruno helped with hire car and finding a very good deal locally , it took so much stress out of our trip . The room was clean , facilities enough , small but well equipped kitchen. It's also a great location from Funchal, good local restaurants without huge prices, again Bruno provided excellent recommendations for local food! Fresh bread hanging on our door every morning was something I really appreciated! How could you possibly ask for more. I can't recommend Vila Marta enough , and thank them also for making our stay stresless , relaxing . I would stay here again without any hesitation! If your looking for a well priced , clean and welcoming stay in Mediera ... You need not look anywhere else.
