Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We are currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NetherlandsThere's no supermarket nearby, so you need to go to the city center for all shopping. It can be done on foot, but streets in Funchal are steep so best to take the car and park in a garage. The only issue we had with the house is that the mattresses are too hard for our taste.
Spacious and quiet house, surrounded by a large garden with banana trees just outside Funchal center. Private parking on the driveway to the house. The master bedroom is huge and has its own bathroom (not separated by a door or wall) with excellent walk-in shower. There's another, older bathroom with a shower over a bath tub. The good thing about that one is that the hot water comes from a gas heater so it never runs out. Nice view towards the sea from the living room, the balcony and from the upper terrace. Excellent mosquito nets and blindout curtains throughout the house.

GermanyAdelino is a very nice host, who also showed us the city and where we can co shopping and take the cable car. He even took care of our luggage for an extra week while we went on a trekking tour. He was ok with us eating fresh fruit from his garden and trusted us with this beautiful home.

PolandVilla Catanho is simply a cozy, functional and completely devoid of artificial splendour family estate, where you can feel at home. The house is surrounded by a banana orchard, but passion fruits, figs and papayas also grow there. It is a real green oasis. There is a driveway for cars and a second, separate exit to the street. Nearby there is a bakery with tasty pastries and excellent coffee. So if you value a quiet holiday away from the city noise, you like the croaking of frogs in the evening and birds singing in the morning, this place is the right place for you. In addition, Adelino and his noble parents are extremely kind and helpful in everything. We had a wonderful holiday here with friends.

SlovakiaI have no comments.
For me and my parents, this accommodation was really awesome. Usually after vacations I say that I would not want to return to the same place, but in the case of this villa I say that I want to return there and for a longer period of time. An incredible garden, and quiet environment, despite the fact that you are basically close to the city center. The owner is very friendly, talkative, and helpful and communication is completely without any problems. I really have to say that this accommodation met my expectations, maybe even exceeded them. If you rent a car, you can easily park it in the garden The beds are comfortable, the accommodation is clean and the overall atmosphere, thanks to the garden, is excellent. We thank Mr. Catanho for this stay

ItalyThe crib close to the bed was a bit creepy but I guess it's good for families.
The place was amazing, pictures can't do justice to it. The house has everything you need and not far there is a supermarket so you can actually cook something instead of always eating out. The views you get from the windows are just so beautiful! Only thing is, if you are visiting and decide stay here, a car may be in your best interest. It has a big sofa, a double, a single room and a master bedroom with a crib and another little bed to the side, so basically is good for both group of friends/couples and families, they'll also fit everyone on the big dining table.

CanadaI wish there are enough place mats for the white table clothe so not to dirty it. A few more bowls for breakfast cereal.
The estate house was pleasant surprise. It has a banana & papaya orchard and a shaded lounge garden in a quite part of the city. A sign at the corner to turn into the last part of the street to the estate gate. The master ensuit has a open hugh bathroom with baby crib. A nice set up over all.

United KingdomNow some minuses: - when we entered the property there was really strong smell of insecticide, which was eventually gone as we opened the windows. There are mosquito nets on the windows. -one day I was sitting on a lovely balcony, when I noticed a stranger, a man with 2 sickles coming down to the planation. This man removed old banana plants. He came a couple more times during the week. Then another man came. I have no idea what for. I was a bit surprised that we were not told that somebody will come to do some work. - some areas in the house need some updating.
This villa is an unusual and quirky. The banana plantation, where the villa is located, is almost in the middle of the old town, but remains rather isolated. Lets start with plusses: - as I said, the location is good: close to the town and the port. The grocery shop is just round the corner. As well as a bus stop. It was very easy to get to town and the beach, but most of the time we had a taxi on the way back, as it was very steep. - the view at the ocean was marvellous. - lots of space inside and outside. - lots of storage. - very comfortable bed (can't say the same about the pillows) - lots of towels. - lovely shower. - a parking space (driving is not easy, but you get used to it)

United StatesAmazing property on the hillside overlooking Funchal. Surrounded by banana trees and other fruit trees and flowers, the garden and grounds make this place special! Plenty of room and washing machine was a big help. We were looking for quiet and this place was close enough to be convenient but far enough from the center to be quiet at night. Excellent local coffee shop and grocery mart just a few blocks away.

IrelandBeautiful Villa in a great location, the views are amazing. Ten minute walk down to Funchal, which kept us fit. Maria and Adelino Snr showed us around. We arrived very late, Maria gave us a lovely pizza, left some other supplies, tea bags milk. This was one of the best Villas we have been to, very well equipped. Lovely shower in master bedroom. The Villa is picture perfect and every morning we were fortunate to open our windows, to the view of the Atlantic Ocean and the lovely banana plantation below. Adelino responds very quickly to any requests. Overall we felt sad leaving the Villa. We will never forget our lovely time spent in Funchal in the Villa, magic.

LatviaCannot think of anything, everything was fine.
The house was close to the centre on a very steep hill though- that's just Funchal. It was ok to walk down the streets- better to use a way through the garden, but we used taxi coming home (since we usually spent the whole day walking around and it is a very steep walk up the hill). The Bolt taxi cost 4 euros from city centre. There was also a bus stop near the house. If you rent a car there would be a lot of space for parking. The house is spacious, beds comfortable, kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. There was a TV with a lot of channels, could watch some of the Olympics. In our opinion the best asset was the garden with an ocean view. We held our breakfast there, as well as spent some late nights enjoying the outdoors. The garden is illuminated. There was a good communication with the owner, could help us when we needed something.

BelgiumThere were a lot of mosquitos, inside and outside of the house, day and night. But there was a spray provided by the owner of the house to help with that.
It was a lovely villa, close to the city. We had everything we needed (appliances, towels, ...). The host was very friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful stay.

United KingdomThe location is a little out of the way in terms of access to the old town, beach, and supermarket - walking down isn't too strenuous, but unless you have a car or you're very fit, you'll likely find yourself taking taxis to get back to the house. Fortunately it only cost 5 euros from the old town to the house at the time we stayed. Needless to say this is also a trade-off as the peace and quiet is largely due to the distance from town. The beds are quite firm and not very comfortable, but that was OK for the short time we stayed.
We stayed for three nights and Adelino was very gracious. We arrived on foot because we weren't due to pick up our rental car until further into our trip, and Adelino kindly took us in his car for a brief tour of the area before dropping us off and helping to carry our bags up. The house itself is clean, spacious, and a joy to stay in with its garden, very good outdoor BBQ, views (both from the garden and veranda) and banana plantation. It's a peaceful spot not too far from the old town, where you can find a variety of pubs, cafes, restaurants and shops (I highly recommend Banana's Pub if you like cocktails!)
