“Stayed at Haida House at Tllal whilst visiting Haida Gwaii. It was a venue for a BBC programme and was the inspiration for us to visit Haida Gwaii. As it was early in the season, although upgraded from a double room to a cabin, no breakfast at the accommodation was available for our stay and the restaurant was on restricted opening, only open Friday to Monday and closed at 9.00pm. The menu was good but limited with no specials available, so after 2 or 3 days you could have tried all on offer. The standard of food was very good and the staff were very friendly. The early season also meant that local restaurants were not open at all or restricted hours. We managed to locate one which opened Wednesday evening, (Blacktail in Djaaling Glids, very good but very busy with locals, and open only to 9.00pm). Haida Gwaii has little tourist infrastructure which is part of the attraction, but be aware that most if not all places you want to see are a long way from Tllal and stores don't all open on a Sunday, so expect an hour or so each way to do any shopping for supplies or be organised enough if you are able. Tarmac roads are good but car hire is charged by kilometre as well as hire cost, so be warned and there is a charge to take the ferry on return to Alliford, payable at Skidegate. Stunningly beautiful island untouched by any mass tourism. Recommend a visit if you like the feeling of complete isolation. Cell (mobile) signal is patchy and internet access/signal is also subject to geographical location. Is the sea safe to swim in? I wouldn't swim without someone else or on shore as tides and currents are strong and the sea is cold, and at Tllal the sea is fairly shallow at low tide. Be careful/mindful of the tons of driftwood logs along the seashore. They appear stable but could pose a real danger.”

“An incredibly beautiful, remote location nestled into the impressive natural setting of Graham Island's central-east coast. But before more superlatives about the stunning setting and the amazing lodging, first I have to call out the incredible Haida House staff. Kathy and her team are super-friendly, pro-active, were unbelievably responsive to our travel drama, kind, compassionate, and eager to share their knowledge of Haida Gwaii. We weren't the easiest guests to manage. Our original booking was for 2 nights in March. I failed to notice that the ferry arrived at 6 am and so I called to ask could we arrange an early check-in on arrival day. Kathy said, no problem and would you like a free upgrade to one of our oceanfront cabins? Wow. Yes please! One of the perks of traveling in the off-season when the crowds are non-existent. Then our ferry was cancelled due to rough seas. We got the last vehicle space on the Sunday night ferry. When we arrived at 6 am Monday, Kathy texted, sure, come up at 11 am and we'll work it all out! Amazing. Kathy and the team greeted us warmly and said the cabin is ready. After 2 nights sleeping fitfully on tossing ferries, this was exactly what we needed. All the cabin views are outstanding, but I think #11 may be the best. Haida House is affiliated with the Haida Nation, and cabins were built in traditional Haida longhouse style. The cabin is nestled in the pines behind a small barrier sand dune with the ocean a stone's throw away. The hot tub experience is amazing. The cabin side facing the ocean is all glass, floor to ceiling, so the views from inside are magnificient, it's as if nature has come inside to join you. The king size beds and pillows were super comfortable, and we fell asleep listening to the surf. Outside, the beach is a 1 minute walk away. Haida House sits on the south edge of a long beach that runs dozens of kilometers up to the north shore. It's not easy to get to Haida Gwaii.”

“The location was perfect; a short drive from the ferry and a couple of minutes walk to the Tourism Info Centre - which was located near the water with a nice green-area and a paved walking trail around the nearby school field. There were also both a large and a small grocery store in the same area, as well as a couple of restaurants - and others within a short drive. The motel has its own restaurant which we used for breakfast and several other meals because it was convenient. Considering this is a motel, it was quiet in the evenings. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating!!”

“This is a family owned business and they are working hard to make everyone comfortable. Staff were friendly and helpful. They have ripped out all the old carpets from the 1970’s, and replaced it with laminate. The room smelled fresh and clean.”
