Room was expensive. A la carte menu was good priced but poor taste. Buffet meal was expensive for what we received. Wine was very overpriced for the little glass served. Staff wasn’t very helpful nor knowledgeable. One example: No one said we had to preorder dinner at 3pm. When asked what to do if we were out in safari at that time, no one had an answer. Although kind, not very helpful.

Beautiful location, clean, so many animals to see without even taking a safari.

Really Wonderful Place to Stay in Swaziland - Some of the Staff were Friendly and Welcoming
    • Leisure trip
    • Solo traveller
    • Twin Room - Ndlovu Camp
    • Stayed 2 nights

Some of the staff were welcoming and friendly, some did not seem to enjoy speaking with or helping visitors - strange considering this is probably one of the main sources of their salaries. It was also not easy communicating with the Lodge in advance - initial enquiry emails sent outside booking.com sometimes needed chasing up, and although I booked meals and activities in advance with Ronald on booking.com as I was told it was peak season and need to book in advance, the reception didn't know about any of these when I arrived. I had to book and pay as I went, which wasn't always easy, and I sometimes had to wait until the last minute to see whether an activity would go ahead or not.

The Hlane Royal National Park is a gem of a place, and a real must-see for visitors to Swaziland - it is like Africa-in-Miniature, where you can see an amazing variety of animals. The waterhole is a huge plus, as you get to see rhinos, hippos and all sorts of antelope throughout the day just a short distance from the main area of the camp. I loved the fact that there was no electricity, just the use of paraffin lamps in the evening, which made my stay there in the bush even more authentic (though there is a plug in the bar available for charging devices). Great tours and activities can also be organised there, and I particularly loved my bush walk in the rhino section.

The Hlane park was difficult to go by yourself, not signs. We booked a game drive but we didn’t see much either.

No hot water in shower. Tea and coffee provided but no water boiler. Breakfast was mediocre.

Beautiful location in Hlane Royal NP, excellent for wildlife enthousiasts. Large rooms with comfortabel beds. Very friendly staff. We did a sunset and sunrise game drive (not in included, book ahead) which were excellent, as is the waterhole next to the restaurant. The absence of electricity is nice for one night, and oil lamps and candles provide light. Decent food for diner (buffet).

We booked for the sunset drive, and I made the mistake of forgetting that it is winter in August in Eswatini and followed the summer schedule. The start time for the sunset drive was 15:30 in winter, but we arrived at 15:50 for the 16:00 summer start time. It would have been nice if the staff who we paid for the activities to had informed us of the start times. Granted, it was busy and there was a long line. The staff probably meant to tell us but forgot, and we should have asked ourselves. Luckily, Nelly was so kind to take us. It ended up being a great drive. And then, he was our guide again for the sunrise drive.

We were definitely able to connect with nature. There's no electricity in the rooms, but there are nice lamps for you to use to light up the room and walk around the park during the night. The dinner was great. It was buffet-style and there were quite a few options to choose from, and the cake was really good. It had a really nice light custard sauce that you can drizzle on top. That with a cup of hot rooibus tea was an amazing way to end the evening. The sunrise drive was my favorite part. Nelly was a great guide. He was funny and he made learning about the animals fun.

I think it should be made more clear before arrival that the cottages are self-catering and there is no restaurant or shop by the cottages (the nearest are by Ndlovu camp 30-45 minutes away by car), and all residents need to be back at the cap before nightfall. This means that in the winter, you need to plan to get your food at the restaurant to go at around 5pm in order to make it back on time. You also are not eligible for sunrise or sunset game drives as they leave from Ndlovu camps and would require you to drive either there or back in the dark.

The cottages were nice and spacious, and had the advertised amenities such as a fridge, stove, oven, etc.

Having to buy a wifi voucher is not great. Most hotels and resorts offer wifi for free now. The buffet style food was a little cold given the winter temperatures.

Hlane is a small national park by African standards but I still got to see lions, hippos, elephants and rhinos at the lodge's water hole and on a sunset safari. Despite having no electricity, the traditional African roundal hut was clean, comfortable, well equipped, warm (in winter) and very cosy. The staff provide you with paraffin lamps at dusk along with a hot flask of water for tea and coffee. They were also great in arranging taxis for me because I had no transport. The highlight for me was watching the rhinos from the bar terrace.

We weren't told we needed to arrive before dark to get across to our cottage on the other side of the park, so after a lot of persuading we convinced them to let us drive ourselves across in the dark. We weren't told we needed to book onto game drives in advance so they were booked up.

We saw the most amazing game right by the main lodge at the watering hole. It was incredible.

Nothing. My only recommendation to future guests rather than the property: arrive during the day because after dark you cannot drive in the park and will not be able to reach your rooms ;-)

What not to like to be in an authentic part of Africa? The location is amazing, inside the national park, only a few steps away from hippos and rhino taking their baths in the pond while guests are sipping coffee at the restaurant. The rooms are so charming, clean and have all the necessary comfort for being in the middle of a National Park.

It had been raining, which made the roads in the park muddy. That made it impossible to go on a self drive. We could only take 2 roads and drive them up and down. Breakfast is quite expensive (R165 pp) and not that great, just a small selection of foods (which is fine, just not for that amount of money). The game drives were quite expensive (same price as Kruger) for the amount of animals you see. There’s a lot of bushes, which makes it hard to look further away.

We verbleven in een tweepersoons rondavel, which was very nice. It was clean, very comfortable beds. It’s nice that the staff is coming at night to light the paraffin lights.

    Bed was not comfortable

We were booked into the other property at Hlane Park (don't recall the name but it's far from the main entrance) but ended up staying here and so glad we did. It's quite charming, the cottages (there is another name for them) are clean and quaint; no electricity but they provide gas lanterns that made the night magical, not to mention the lions roaring through the night, nearby. Large animals are hanging around the main lodge at the watering hole; pull up a chair and watch them come and go before your eyes. Staff was kind and helpful too. Food at the lodge is fine. Wish we could have stayed longer.
